    In case you didn't catch it, Olivia says to Poppy she dreamed the storm where Nell was lost from episode 6. That did happen. She was confusing reality with her dreams.
    At the beginning, she actually "lost" time while talking to Hugh, that's why she doesn't notice him grabbing Luke from her arms. She goes in and out of consciousness. She doesn't differentiate reality from delusions.
    Next week, I'll post the story in your comments and explanation of each ghosts and Hills family history. And how the mechanics of time works

    Poppy is like this because she's clinically 'insane'. It's literally the first thing we learn about her lol.

    I think we also have to appreciate the fact that Hugh has never seen a ghost at this point, nor does he believe in any supernatural phenomena - he has no idea what Olivia is on about or why she seems to be behaving this way -
    He knows she’s going through something so he told her to get away and he did his best to manage five kids on his own while working, but SHE came back , she didn’t want to go away, so Hugh’s view, his wife held a screwdriver to his throat, killed a child and tried to kill THEIR children. She is a serious threat to the family and she absolutely cannot come first right now.

      and it’s like the eighties or so, so mental health wasn’t talked about. he probably thought she was having some sort of mental break, but it’s not like he would have known how to help her. and there’s the stigma of taking her to the doctor, and then possibility she just gets thrown in a mental institution. i don’t blame how he acted at all. steve said hugh didn’t do anything to save her, but it’s not like hugh knew how. steve loves to talk about how his mom was mentally ill, but forgets that that wasn’t common phrase but a stigmatized one. hugh did all he knew how.

    It always breaks me to rewatch the scene where the twins talk about the future. Most people catch that Luke's talk about being so afraid he'd put poison in his veins is meant to be his drug addiction. But little Nell says that her hearts breaks and she cannot feel happiness. And that talks about her depression.
    It made me realize that depression does indeed come across as like you cannot feel happy although you know you should.

    I feel like Igli is the closest to me watching this show - I'm also in the 'one of the best shows I've ever seen' camp, and I can tell you, it's BETTER on rewatch. When you can focus on the heart of the story, not on background ghosts or scares, and notice all the details and foreshadowing, it's amazing. And this episode is a large part of that, because when you have the hindsight as to what Olivia was going through so much of it hits differently, same as everything about the Bent-Neck Lady does after Nellie's episode.
    And even though Katie Parker as Poppy has a relatively small role on this show, she's still one of my favourite things about it. Her monologue about her kids dying still gives me goosebumps.

And then the ending?? “How could we” 😭 This show still moves me no matter how many times I watch it. I hope you guys do decide to watch more of Mikes series and movies if you haven’t already.

  • @araybia
    @araybia 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

    blake you have to understand hugh’s first instinct was to get the kids to safety; which is what he should’ve done. he doesn’t know what the house is doing to her or the extent of how it’s preying on her so he didn’t know what was happening only that he needed to get them away first.
    poppy killed her own kids; so she’s using olivia’s vulnerability and sensitivity to prey on that and have her think that killing her own kids is the only way to keep them safe. (corey picked up that it was the boy in the wheelchair but he was also the one banging on the wall in shirley’s room.) poppy’s truly the only evil one because you’re right; everyone is either a spectator or tried to help like hazel. (william didn’t do anything all he wanted was his hat and the others didn’t cause any physical harm.)
    abigail is real. if you listened closely to mrs. dudley, she talks about not letting her daughter out/come to the house. the show does a good job at making her seem like a ghost because luke really is the only one who saw her and spoke to her prior to this episode. so liv actually did kill her.

    • @daytrippera
      @daytrippera 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      One note, Poppy wasn't evil, she was insane and the house fed on that and corrupted her, just like the house corrupted Olivia by using Poppy.
      Both Poppy, Mr. Hill (who was also on the asylum and endedup locking himself inside the walls), Nell, Luke and to some extent Theo were the most vulnerable due to being more "sensitive" and the house preyed on that. The only pure evil thing is the house itself. The people who lived there and died were willing and unwilling victims of the house.

    • @jhufffamily7920
      @jhufffamily7920 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@daytrippera the biggest reason why nell and luke were the ones “chosen” was because they were young enough. the other siblings were already “tainted” by the world aka it was too late for olivia to save them. but luke and nell were only six, and they weren’t “tainted” yet

    • @Moompl
      @Moompl 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think if we go back to the little poem Poppy tells Hugh in the next episode we can pinpoint the moment the house became so predatory. The first Hill ended up killing the original owners of the house, all of them, before taking up residents there. I think that tainted the house, and the Hills forever.

  • @AnnaB22
    @AnnaB22 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

    This show is so good because it made the audience just as tone-deaf to poor Luke as everyone else in the house. Through 9 episodes no one believes that Abigail is real even though he constantly tells them over and over again. It is a revealing look at how many times children are shut down, dismissed, and ignored but we always tell them to "Come talk to us." What's the point? We don't listen anyway, but we are surprised when our kids turn to drugs to escape a reality that doesn't welcome or listen to them.

    • @jhufffamily7920
      @jhufffamily7920 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      yes!! the audience always gets irritated at the dad telling the kids that the ghosts and weird stuff is all in their heads or has a logical explanation, but the audience turns around, sees abigail, and says to luke “abigail is a ghost”. this part of the show is so good because it reminds the audience that they would do the same because the audience already HAS. it adds on to luke’s trauma because in a metaphorical way, we -the audience- basically say to his face that we don’t believe him; and we actually SEE abigail which the others do not. tldr; the audience is luke’s biggest op 🤭

    Poppy was already insane before she was in the house. This story was told by Mrs. Dudley to Liv. She was in an institution and met her husband there. Poppy is the only evil spirit in the house. The others do nothing or even try to help.
    But you can't really say evil with Poppy, because she's just crazy. Easy game for the house.
    The conversation between Liv and Mrs. Dudley at the beginning of the episode should show what happens when you don't live out your emotions, but swallow them. At some point, everything just bursts out at once and it rains stones. That was a reflection of what the father is responsible for. He remains silent all these years with the result that everything has gotten worse, which led to the death of Nell, to Luke's drug addiction, Stevens fear of loss loved ones to mental sickness, Sherryl becomes the ice queen and Theo builds walls. In his effort to protect his children through silence, the father has made everything worse. He prepared the way for the house.

    Since I know you guys have already seen the finally, I want to explain Abigail and Poppy. For Abigail, if you were to rewatch the monologue by Mr. Dudley when he was talking to Hugh, he did say that they had a second daughter that isn't allowed at Hill House. It's pretty common for people to miss this detail. I did the first time I watched. Mr. Dudley also mentions that his mother worked at Hill House and died there. I believe that's who we see taking ghost Abigail's hand after she dies.
    As for Poppy, I don't think she's any more powerful than any of the other ghosts. I just think she's more menacing due to the fact that she was mentally unstable in life. If you recall Mrs. Dudley's conversation with Steve when he was checking out the dressing table he wanted to finish for his Mom, after finding the photo of Poppy in the drawer, she told him how she was clinically insane and that she and Mr. Hill had met in the insane asylum. I'm not sure, but I suspect that Poppy may have killed her own children using the same flawed reasoning she was passing on to Olivia.
    Great reaction, as always. Can't wait to see the finale!

      the woman that takes Abigails Hand is Hazel Hill in her young form; she’s credited as such in the episode, you can see a picture of her on a mantle as well, and Mike Flanagan confirmed it in an interview. It’s pretty confusing though, I’m not even sure why the scene IS there, without the credits you‘d never know is Hazel and it has no bearing on the story that it’s her

    The problem with Emmy's is that, at the time this aired, Netflix series weren't eligible for an Emmy, because Netflix isn't a TV show; it's a streaming show, so it didn't qualify. I think a year (or two) after this show, people agreed that streaming shows should be rated in the same way as TV shows on regular channels and the eligibility for streaming shows were included for the Emmy's. So in that sense this show paved the way for other shows.
    Also, if you like these kinds of shows, you may want to watch _Midnight Mass_ later, which is another Mike Flanagan Netflix series. That one doesn't have nearly as many jumpscares as Hill House, but it has the same disheartening, oppressive and suspenseful atmosphere, not to mention the stellar acting, storytelling and dialogues. Blake would've appreciated it if you'd watched that one instead of Hill House ;)
    I personally had trouble getting through Bly Manor, but perhaps that's more because that storyline and characters didn't connect as much with me as Hill House and Midnight Mass.

    Mr. Dudley tells Hugh about losing their first child. I think that's made Mrs. Dudley overprotective and that's why she talks that way to Olivia, unintentionally playing into her paranoia and Poppy's manipulation.
    The Dudley's dead child was a still born baby. Not Abigail's age.
    Poppy was mentally ill when she married William and came to Hill House. She tells Olivia about watching her kids die terribly. William disappeared, he being the guy who bricked himself in the wall. I think it broke her completely. Interesting side note, the way Poppy described her children's conditions and death, lines up with long term exposure to black mold, which Hugh finds in the walls of Hill House.

    Remember, Poppy was in an asylum when she met her husband. The reason she's the way she is, is because she's feeding on Olivia's fears and insecurities about her children, and she switches between being old and young and beautiful to show how easy it is to manipulate people. Also, Abigail was very much a real child and the whole show does a really good job of making you think she's a ghost until the moment she starts foaming. In one episode, the housekeepers talked about how they keep her from the world to keep her safe so the only time she's out is when she sneaks out. Olivia actually kills her with the rat poison.
