Loved, love this opera. I am going back to see it a second time. The dance at beginning of Act II was just so clever. Normally I like tragedies or Dar comedies. But HM S Pinafore was perfect. Most enjoyable , free spirited, lighthearted couple of hours of 2021. After such a long lockdown and a slow, dour return to life closer to how we knew it pre Covid, this come as a pleasant reawakening. But apart from that, the production is magnificent on all fronts. And the staging, the sets, are the most beautiful I have seen anywhere in an awfully long time, matched only by the ENO 's Orpheus season two years ago
I saw it tonight with a friend as a birthday treat- my first ever opera! I really enjoyed every moment of it. The set was ingenious, wonderful costumes, hilarious all the way through. A really good time.
I wish the in-theater entertainment company Fathom Events would offer this. They have a whole series of heavy opera, but I would desperately love the opportunity to see this quality of a production in a movie theater.
Hang on…that’s Les Dennis in the middle! Saw him as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and he was superb Maybe his voice isn’t quite suited to light opera but it’s Les Dennis & you need a good comic actor for the role!
You do realize, of course, that all of those are words which can be made from "H.M.S. Pinafore". Oh, my lord in heaven. (falls over backward with pure delight) Until now *I* had never realized and I've known this operetta for a long, long time. Oh...my...lord. ^___^ Wordplay and words at play. ^____^ Playful punny words. ^___^
This is one of my most favorite G&S pieces. However, I'm not in love with this rendition. And, someone might mention to the director that moving the set and the actors around does definitely NOT make for good G&S. Nope.
H.M.S. Pinafore by William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan is a treasure of British theatre that survives even a bad performance. The orchestra here have the good sense to play Sullivan's music well. However the shabby attempts to "improve" on Gilbert's words ("a lord whose breath is getting shorter") and crude staging bring shame on this insipid effort.
Saw this show last night 18th Nov 2021 / 10 out of 10 / an excellent production / Yes a lot of the jokes are corny but the audience loved them . Get a ticket now : > )

I'm too fearful for the singers running up & down that staircase while trying to sing to enjoy the performance.

Josephine has a gorgeous voice, but ngl, this is one of the most boring renditions of this trio I’ve ever seen
