Hate crimes are very hard to provide evidence for unless it is concrete and planned.
This attack was unorganized and got out of hand. I do believe in my personal OPINION and seeing the video that the assailants attacked Johnathan with more force because he was white. But there is no way to prove that unless the FBI shows an orchestrated attempt via text messages or phone recordings that the assailants wanted to attack him for being white.

There’s no playing the “devil’s advocate” in this situation. These people had intentionally beat this kid to cause either severe damage or death. They robbed a 17yr old of his life and a father of his son. 25yr minimum term.

But it was a racial attack - blacks on white - as is the case in 87% of interracial crime between blacks and white;s and quite often it’s a group attack because they’re cowards and they want 5 on 1 or 10 on one. . If this was white Maga hat wearing Republicans, they would’ve already burned the city down by now. There is an absolute double standard when it comes to the acknowledgment of interracial crime. That means 87% of the time the media doesn’t wanna say anything about it and 13% of the time they’re going to prop up, the so-called victim, when, even in those cases, the narrative is distorted, just as it was in the George Floyd case, or the Michael Brown case.

I'm a petite white woman who went to a 'black' junior high school in the late '70's--early 80's. Someone asked in the comments 'why would you send your kid to a school where they're a minority?'. I didn't have a choice--we were essentially bussed in by the school district. I was consistently targeted, bullied, assaulted--all of it. That was from the kids. Some of my teachers, also black, were just as bad. While the teachers didn't assault me, they wouldn't stop it from happening, either, even though they knew it was going on. One teacher was especially bad--I remember her like it was yesterday. I really feel for this child who was killed--I can't fully imagine how frightened he must have been once he realized the full extent of what was suddenly happening.

I think so too but, it's not exactly cowardice. In our world today kids just have no respect for life. Black kids are raised with a chip on their shoulder. I'm trying to diplomatic here but, if you look at statistics black kids are most likely to commit violent crime when in a group. It's the you cover my back and I'll cover yours mentality. The police reported that there were 10 rather than 15. They’ve arrested 8 of the kids so far. Age range is 13-17. This went down just off property and was in an alley. A bystander saw the kid laying there and carried him back to the school. That’s where the 911 call came from.
There is a difference between an accident versus intentional. A bottle in the air and hitting a person in the exact spot to cause their death is an accident. If there were charges it would be manslaughter if the DA decided to press charges. These kids combined killed someone, the intent to inflict bodily harm is there. That’s murder. Ignorance of the law or going easy on them due to being under 18 isnt an excuse when the end result is murder. They are recommending to the DA that all of them be charged as adults.
If this were my kid, I’d be hit with murder charges after getting even. As a parent, I can’t imagine losing my daughter. My mom had to bury my little brother and that shit was hard to watch her go through.

I planned fun activities every day we met, and still students were on their phone laughing at videos, calling me a bitch, and degrading me for being white. It was the worst experience I have ever had as a college professor. I received no assistance from the high school. Even the students who wanted to participate in the course, could not show it, for fear of being harassed by other students- in an honors course. Very sad. Parents need to teach respect, and avoid yelling over each other and acting entitled. Definitely appears to be a cultural issue. It is not about color.

There is a book called Lord of the Flies, it was written by a man called William Golding. This man was a teacher and he taught my father. My dad said he sometimes called the kids ‘my little beasts’ but remembered him as a good teacher. I studied this book as part of my English ‘O’ level exams and it had an impact on me. It is a story of a large group of white 11-15 year old boys surviving in the jungle after the explosion of an atom bomb and as the story progresses they form a community with rules, but they also start to distinguish between each other form cliques and finally a chubby boy become there target of difference and well given what this comment sect is about you can guess the result. This is a good book though a bit stodgy in places but Golding’s exploration into the deterioration in social mores I feel is very nuanced and well expressed. I understand why my father said he sometimes called them ‘little beasts’. I am not so sure these 15 children did what they did out of racism, I think it’s a matter of difference a group of same versus the unyielding individual. What is racism is the way the media manipulates the narrative and seems to not give equal coverage over these types of events. This tends to be the case over here in the UK as well. One needs to remember that behaviour is learned from what is presented around the child and if child is not taught that if you break the rules there will be consequences then why would they follow the rules and I am sad to say this is what it leads to. Adults step up to the plate and return to taking responsibility for your children. But hey I am just a grumpy old white woman who works in a British prison dealing with this sort of mentality every day. Apologies I put this comment in the wrong place, no criticism intended for the OP😊

Yep you're exactly correct. I'm a LV local and I've noticed a few elementary schools talking about "diversity, equity, and inclusion" when just about every school, white kids are in the minority, at least the ones I know of. Everywhere I've lived here, white people are the minority population. So, why in schools, where white kids are the "minority" are they talking about protecting "students of color" it just doesn't make sense. They are the majority at that point! They should be making sure everyone is treated fairly regardless of skin color. That's the problem.

I'm at a loss for words in cases like this, just the idea of attacking a single helpless person with 8+ people disgusts me. None of the perpetrators can be so stupid as not to understand that at this moment they are killing someone or, in the “best case scenario”, crippling someone. The age of the perpetrator is of secondary importance to me in this case, the lack of empathy and ruthlessness of this act calls for the harshest possible punishment, I'm sorry. These are not children or teenagers, not even people, they are ruthless monsters.
EDIT: I wrote this post in an emotional mood, just to clarify, I am not calling for the death penalty, however the death of a teenager committed by a mob of 12-17 year olds is not a trivial offense and should not be treated as such. The callousness of these “children” just still shocks me. And I never said anything about race or colour, because it doesn't matter.

Decided he wanted to fight me. I had thought he was a friend of mine. I was surrounded by black kids. And they commenced beating me.
And no one came to my defense. I felt betrayed by this person I thought was my friend. This was back in early 70s.. Fortunately, I stood my ground Although I was much smaller. They beat my friend to within an inch of his life and left him in a coma for a long time. When he woke up they said he would never walk again and most likely need a hospital bed for the rest of his life. Thankfully he proved us all wrong as he is almost completely recovered. I imagine he still has issues due his injuries long term but the lads who did it had no remorse and they werent punished as much as they should have been. They literally jumped on his head as he lay lifeless on the floor, his head had a dent in after from their feet. People who commit these crimes are pure evil and should never see the light of day.

I went to high school in 2000--2004 and in those years, plus my years in middle school, I saw all of two fights and one was between two special needs kids so I don't think it counts much. My school was majority white. I spent one summer in summer school...in a mostly black and hispanic school. I did hear the racial comments since I was nearly the only white person, only one other white person in my class. Huge difference.
