12. Fluid Dynamics of Drag (Part I)

  • This collection of videos was created about half a century ago to explain fluid mechanics in an accessible way for undergraduate engineering and physics students. I find that no other series of videos has explained the basics of fluid mechanics better than this one by the National Committee for Fluid Mechanics (those national committees gotta be good for something...)
    As such, I have uploaded these videos here for the benefit of students and interested laypersons. I do not own the copyright and these videos were not made by me. If anyone should want me to take them down, I will comply without complaint.

    So the shaking you experience in a flying in a commercial airplane Were the dominant flow conditions in the atmosphere Has altered ( pressure drop etc ), to affect stable flight speed Has the plane reached the speed were the smooth surface of the wings and body now has more drag ( But why did not the plane shake earlier in the fight When passing over the speeds were the smooth surface experiences this greater drag? )

    In a thicker viscosity a greater surface area produces more Drag, a dimpled golf ball will gain more lift than a smooth one. I'm sort of stumped on the bomb versus ball but would venture to say due to a unequal balance of pressure...

      A fishes body reminds me of the bomb shape only difference is that it's flat instead of round. We can learn a lot from Nature's design of Birds and Fish in fluid dynamics...

    So the drag goes down roughly at... RE = 45 m/s * 0.1 m / 1.5e-5 = 300000. Yup; that's the ticket.
