    It needs scaling up to 4 inch props to gain efficiency. That sounds like a fantastic product to me. I really like that they are solving the low 1 x 18650 voltage issues, and hopefully it will be a little less sluggish with more efficient 4" props.

    If i'm not mistaken, Dave_C FPV has a new rekon 35, which is basically the same principle as this quad, but made by him, so i'm guessing it would be a little better (this is a 75% biased comment haha, i love his work) but i'm sure it would be really interested to see a comparison between the two !

    I'd love to see you slapping two Lithium-titanate batteries (also available as 18650 size) in there and flying this thing. The specialty of this battery is, that it is very save and can provide virtually infinite current (of course it can't .. but it's close). Also you can charge them in seconds. Maybe it improves the performance a bit?

  • @bernardfouche5241

    Thanks for the video, I got one of these recently and it's a nice quad for easy cruising, it is very accessible to newbies, 18650 cells are easy to handle so if you are looking for an affordable cruiser I think it's okay to get it. Did you try to use ExpressLRS with it ? I tried changing the firmware of the R9MM OTA I bought with the drone but the lack of documentation of the FC is a pain, I did not succeed to flash using the betaflight passthrough.

    • @MrXarian
      @MrXarian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It just boils down to C rating. A 2s1 configuration like JB used will struggle at maneuvers of any kind. If you run a 2s2 configuration, you can get decent performance and high fight time, but it will be heavy. Larger quads with high TWR, not designed for performance, would probably benefit the most from switching to LiIon. Am seriously considering doing this for my 16.5", because it will literally double my flight time

  • @MrAndrewparrish
    @MrAndrewparrish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Joshua. Love your content. As I understand things this quad is 2s1p. Therefore there will be no additional amps than the 1s quad (1s1p). The Sony cells you are using will put out about 25amps either in 1s1p or 2s1p. The advantage is additional voltage which as you point out will help out with voltage sag in the same way as a 6s quad has less voltage sag than a 4s quad. I want to build a 4inch 2s lion quad... The higher voltage helps as I think you could realistically run dji with this (and would have one if I has not fried my only spare Vista air unit) waiting for replacement parts and replacement dollars.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I could have said that part more clearly. The advantage is that, at 2x the voltage, you pull 1/2 the amps, to get the same watts. So there is an amp advantage to 2S, not in that the batteries can provide more amps, but that the motors pull half the current.

  • @jovaraszigmantas
    @jovaraszigmantas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    3:20 I do understand what you mean but it is simply false that you will get more amps aka current. In a series configuration you will get more voltage and more power but not more current or capacity in mAh (will get in Wh). Just a small mistake, but you mentioned more voltage and continued with more current which can be misleading to newcomers. Overwise good video.

    • @fpvdotkiwi
      @fpvdotkiwi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +1 In series, you are limited to the max amp draw of the weakest link. In this case you will only ever be able to draw the max amperage a single cell can provide.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You're right. What I meant to communicate was that, at 2x volts, you pull 1/2 amps, to get the same watts. Therefore the batteries are loaded less and, you get better performance.

    • @johnfaustus1
      @johnfaustus1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoshuaBardwell This statement is also incorrect. By doubling the voltage, you may not necessarily halve the current draw per cell. That condition is satisfied only if the load (the 4x motors primarily) are fixed power sinks. At a higher voltage, they may continue to draw the same current - you'll see that as them producing ~2x the power output. Furthermore, it also possible the current draw may increase.

  • @badraven9532
    @badraven9532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a home built NanoLR and a REKON3. They fulfill only one purpose, longer cruise duration for the overall weight than with LiPo. Note: I said overall weight. The frame weight compromises strength to service the heavy battery. I use mine at super low level when others are flying (mostly fixed wing) at my club and occupying the higher levels. They make a change from the aggressive freestyle quads, but they are not cheap, even home built, so very much a niche item. Anyone who started with the brushed 65's indoors will be at home! I REALLY don't see the purpose in this one though, its beyond the point where weight and performance don't match well enough. And yes, I CAN freestyle my two a bit early in a cells charge, and I have not broken anything after months of flying. However, CADDX Ant cameras are rubbish, period. Have rejected two Ant's now due arrival with dirt inside lens and lens locked by glue but out of focus. Also in my circle there's a far too high incidence of flight controller failures, mostly overheating. Good review, but the quad? Basically nothing to see here, pass on by.

  • @POLARISFPV

    It is apparent that LiPos are a huge barrier to entry. Especially how volatile they can be if neglected or misused. Maybe super capacitors (potentially) on Fpv drones is the next major innovation in our hobby? Super capacitors are still in their infancy stage, but as I understand Them they should be able to handle a high discharge.

    • @ChilkoNZ
      @ChilkoNZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The voltage discharge curve is the issue with supercaps, it drops off exponentially so if you want to use all of the stored energy you need to have some power electronics (eg. boost converter) to keep a steady output voltage for the quad.

I fly mostly long range and did many tests and it works very well when it's configured correctly and it has at least 8 GPS lock. I test it almost on each session when it's safe to do so and I triggered it involuntarily often in the mountains. Double voltage can deliver double watts (power) at same amps (current).

    • @lazyhominid
      @lazyhominid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In parallel you get the C sum. You can pull amps from both batteries at the same time. But in series, you get the C rating of one battery (and you should never serial connect two batteries of different C rating (nor parallel connect them, at that) since the way lies fires) though you get double the voltage.
      Since the HUD clearly displayed the voltage from one battery, they are connected in parallel, meaning the voltage is no better than with one battery, though they will pump out a lot of current.

    • @dtotheennis
      @dtotheennis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      2 perfectly paired batteries in parallel will exactly half the current each one has to deliver for the same watts. If you take one of the 1x18650 quads and strap a second battery on there, each one has to deliver less current to reach the demanded watts, but the demand for current overall goes up because of the increased weight.
      With batteries in series, each one has to deliver the full current. This current should be lower, because in theory, double the voltage means half the current for the same watts. Due to different efficiency of voltage regulators, motors with different KV and other real world factors, you won't half the current when going from 1s to 2s.

    Why would anyone buy these things?
    Nurk tested the Emax Babyhawk 2 HD and got over 22 minutes on 18650's! I can easily get the 10 - 12 minutes JB got on this barely cruising quad, by just using a standard 1100 - 1500mah 4s lipo we all probably own. AND, that's not just barely cruising either! But... And it's a huge BUT! I can use a 450 - 850mah 4s and do awesome freestyle flying or RIP OPEN THE SKY with fast racing / aggressive freestyle flying that's FUN AS HELL! Like we do with all " FUN" quads. 😎🤘
    So, it does both slow cruising long range, and freestyle either mellow or aggressively and DOES THEM ALL WELL!
    It's on the other end of the QUALITY spectrum, as it's high quality, using great parts VS. Eachine using the lowest end in parts and a hard plastic battery holder that'll be sure to break very easily. It'll also unload those batteries pretty easy as they just pop in, with nothing to make them stay in, making it virtually impossible to find your quad if and when you crash some distance away. 😳🙄 Yes, there's a good chance you'll lose this baby!
    They also make the Emax in digital and analog. And, I have to comment that the video image quality of the Eachine was terrible! So, they used a crap camera besides using other crap quality parts, like they always do! You can get the opposite in image quality and get it crystal clear, by getting the DJI digital version of the Emax. The Emax will cost you way, Way less money after a year or two also, because those quality parts don't fail, burn out, or break nearly as often as the cheapest parts available that Eachine uses! You'll be repairing it often, I know, I've owned Eachine quads before.
    You certainly get what you pay for with Eachine, that's for sure!!! 🥴😫🤷
