  • As our scrap bucket gets low we have less material to chose from. For this weeks hook of the week we will make a classic split heart hook from 1/8 x 1/2" stock.

    Hi John,
    Been wantin ta blacksmith for years.
    I been watchin ya for awhile and started watchin Big Dog and others as per your advice. The more I watch the more I need to buy an anvil. I am trying ta buy a house in Sitka, Alaska. The one we are lookin at has enough lot space ta build a small shop. Maybe I'll get ta ring the anvil soon.

    After you rounded the fingers that became the heart, I'm surprised you didn't just use the scrolling pliers or a small set of scrolling Forks/ jig to do all of the shaping of the heart. I find it easier to keep things symmetrical, but I'm glad to see you showing the work being done over the horn.

    Dang , a tiny piece of material and you get that out of it ...with out making a sparkler out of it in the forge ;)

      The gas forge can be set at a point where you can't accidentally burn the material.

    Great little hook. I might start my forging with something like this, after a forge nd tongs, that is. It is about time I stop watching only, and start doing.

    John, I do not know why it is (it may just be your personality) but I truly enjoy watching you work the metal! I have never been a blacksmith, never even thought of it before and yet I find you channel intriguing.. I have tried other blacksmithing channels and lost interest after two or three videos, but here I find myself looking forward to watch yours.. I am amazed at my intrigue and how much enjoyment I derive from watching you work.. SO thanks for your sharing my friend, carry on and be safe!

    I'm going to build for my wife she treasure anything I make for her.
    I did get out to The Quad State in Troy Ohio as a beginner learn alot and got many good supplies and some great prices meet Yamaz also Brian Bazeil ( whom I judge as the best Blacksmit with hammer skills).I will be joining the SOFA.

    Think I’m gonna give this one a go but put a little of my own style into it and twist the tines together where the heart comes together at. I’ve got a large amount of 1/8” x 5/8” x 42” that I picked up at an old job that’s just been sitting around while I’ve been trying to decide what to do with.

    Hey John, now that you have a heart shaped hook of the week, maybe you should think of making a diamond, spade and club shaped hook of the week to go with the heart shaped hook.

    You've got me wanting to try out some forge work on my own... Just need to convince the wife to let me collect yet another hobby with a large initial funding bill. Also sounds like maybe there have been recent changes to the audio equipment.

      Blacksmithing an be addictive, but worth it. No new changes to the audio, same wireless mic I've been using for a year or so.

      Those are as purchased from Blacksmiths Depot. I think they are made for electricians.

      Nope, that bucket needs to just go. Hopefully over the course of a year or two we can clear out most of the old buckets.

      It wasn't intentional, but because the material bulges out in the back when punching it worked out perfect when it was flattened again.

    How does that slider bar for the camera work? Does it auto adjust?

      I mean just straight away with out using a bickern or or the horn of your anvil.

      Just a matter of preference, I doubt it would be any faster. But try both out and see how it goes

      Made one a month ago, but my heart scrolls were smaller. I made it using the bickern I made from a rail-spike (the hardie hole on my small 53 lbs. Fisher-Norris anvil cast in 1904 is 5/8ths of an inch. Rail-spikes are conveniently 5/8ths of an inch for shank dimensions.)
