I like how there was almost no Protect on the old team, and now everything besides Choice Scarf Rotom has it
That has been one thing I will always keep in mind, protect is so OP and necessary for double battles.

@@pokeinator7834 Okay, but when Protect is good in singles it's WAY slower and more of an avoid-the-fight thing than in VGC where it's doing all sorts of things to get you back in the action (aside from sometimes stalling Trick Room or whatever). Actually, just in general, I would say singles is way less aggressive than VGC lol
Like, in this very video, he comments on how long one of the battles is (because this is way too slow of a team for VGC), and it's just nowhere close to what's considered a long singles battle.

HO vs HO in singles is the perfect length for me,fast and fun but even up to BO vs balanced, I think singles is the more enjoyable than doubles
Now when we get to balanced vs balanced and the demonic stall and semi stall teams,definitely singles is too slow and grindy and it needs improvement there,but nothing is perfect outside of god

Wolfed using essentially meme teams for online fun to keep from burning out, while actually using meta powerhouses in in person tournaments is going to be a problem for everyone else
I totally forgot they nerfed Soul Dew so bad. Used to be a built in Calm Mind, now it’s just Dragon Fang and Twisted Spoon in the same item. How the mighty have fallen
Because it was super unbalanced, and even the game devs in some Pokemon versions banned the item when entering the Elite 4

@@covelt The team revolves around hippoudon spamming slack off while stalling for turns of sandstorm and sand tomb.
Registeel and gliscor are bulky setup sweepers, rotom and latios are support/pivots, and magmar is there to try to slow the opponent down and disrupt.
This is a smogon gen V bulky offense team being played in gen 9 VGC
By contrast, vgc teams usually have a hyper offensive pokemon and a support pokemon on the field at all times, it's a fundamentally different team structure & gameplay style
*Short version:* Smogon battles are really long (~70 turns), VGC battles are short (~10 turns)
@@FlamingZelda3no? Smogon is usually singles, vgc is always doubles - that’s the only difference in turn number, doubles is just faster and doesn’t allow stall nearly as much
@@coveltsingles (what smogon commonly uses) has a lot of stall - Wolfe using mons which live a long time and extend the game, not quite stall but very bulky - singles meta type team rather than doubles meta

Competitive pokemon felt so complicated and hard to get into until I found your channel, you do an amazing job of explaining everything and making it seem fun. I have never seen an ad read drag the sponsor so hard without actually crossing any lines.
also I think I've drastically underestimated how many tournaments are going on since it seems like there's a new one of these videos every couple weeks.
Some of Wolfe's vids are about large in person tournaments, others are about online tournaments which may or may not be sponsored by game freak (depends on the tournament). Usually if Wolfe is live talking over the match its an online tournament, meanwhile if its an official broadcast does an analysis of the match while a re-creation of the match takes place in the background. Also, Wolfe brings off-meta strategies into online tournaments, but has stated he's going to be bringing more conventional Pokémon into in-person tournaments.
These are like documentaries/podcasts. Love them. Could probably listen to 3hrs or more. Love love.

It's neat that you resurrected the team.
One thing I love in your content is how you're willing to use Pokemon that nobody else considered and take them in a new direction. It's creative and resourceful.
Of course any World Champ who can find victory with an underdog Pokemon or an unconventional strat is going to have some absolutely terrible team attempts. And instead of being embarrased and hiding it, it's part of your story.
You learned important lessons that directly influenced your strategies moving forward, and most importantly, the setback didn't stop you from being creative or resourceful.

8:20 This is crazy. This might be the first time I've heard Wolfe even acknowledge the existence of singles. I was already surprised when he showed footage from pokeaim, but this was shocking. It feels really nice though, throughout every video whenever Wolfe says a pokemon is bad I've always been thinking "Well at least mention that they're great in singles." It got to the point where I assumed it had something to do with his affiliation with the pokemon company, really lovely to see it finally happen though!

@@pokeinator7834 I'm just referring to his main channel videos over the course of the past year or so. The most notable example for me was when Wolfe made a video about Exeggutor and specifically said that it's "never been good", when Exeggutor is one of the best pokemon in gen 1, from before doubles even became the official pokemon format. There are less jarring examples, but it's absolutely been a thing. Again, it's not like he has any obligation to mention singles since he's a vgc channel, but it does feel nice when giving an overview of the capabilities of specific pokemon.

So I know he wanted to stay true to the original team as much as possible, but I think evolving Magmar into Magmortar would have been fine as well. Not all the way through the video yet, so I don't know how well Magmar wound up doing here, but I figured I'd at least mention this. Now, of course, I could be missing something that makes Magmortar worse than Magmar here (I know it's slower), however I do think it probably would have at least helped? Maybe?
