Good choices. Here is some ideas. 1. Plant as many drought resistant trees. mimosa tree. Build shaded nursery Green the desert 2. Dont let any water leave your property. Check damns and holding tanks. Percolate and fill the reservoirs. 3. Chop and drop. Build up the land with bio-matter. All green and brown plat stuff stays on the ground. 4. Hügelkultur is your friend do it lots
There is also a govt grant for beaver damns in AZ. Its funny but true
This is all excellent thanks!
@@copperdeserthomestead A word of advice against hugelkultur in your environment. It's a great technique in places with good water. In arid locations it's better to go down into the ground, putting the woody debris deep. The increased surface area of a raised hugel is more evaporation surface in an arid climate.
My uncle had beaver dams on his ranch in Quesnel, BC. He was an engineer. The dams irrigated the alfalfa crops. This ranch began in the 40's.
I will be impressed if a beaver wanders up your ravine! That would be so cool if THEY figured a way to store enough water and greens to survive!😊
All great ideas👍
Raising your kids in rural lifestyle is never a wrong choice. Your mental health will benefit. It will be hard work but very rewarding. It will keep you two close.
"We want to be our kid's teachers." well said and nuff said. Good luck and God bless.
Not exactly the "normal" type place to build a homestead but it will have challenges that are not normally dealt with here on TH-cam.
Wishing your family all of the very best.
I usually enjoy watching the Alaska homesteaders. However, I’m looking forward to watching the challenges from this part of the country. Should be interesting.
Well. I'm rooting for you. Praying for you too. When you are my age, you will look back and thank yourself for doing this for your family.
That's so cool that you have family history there on your property. Pops had a plan for that land and now you and your husband are making it reality .. that's a beautiful thing
You and your family will reap the benefits many times over. My husband and I started 2 years ago. We are both in late 60’s with no experience. What a journey. My hubs regrets we didn’t do it many years ago. Many things in the city are considered essential but are in truth detrimental to fulfilling life.
Eudamonia( a life well lived) vs hedonism. The rural life offers the first one, a city life offers the second.
We started 2.5 years ago. I see some great advice here. If u have money then no problems. The single best thing we did in our hot dry climate was starting our food forest. But but but, if u want to save years plant what grows real easy in your location, then incorporate other items. If your neighbour says grow passion fruit because they grow like weeds here. Then u grow heaps of them. Then u create shade , the beginning of an ecosystem. We found bananas grow like nuts. We had 6 half dead plants. We natured them and now we have hundreds as our basics. We have hundreds of passion fruit, grapes . All the above cost zero. We have added about 80 other fruits and half are doing well. Growing annuals are tough early on. Our place is completely transforming right now. Another year or two it will be incredible. We grew hundreds if not thousands of nitrogen fixes which created shade. Almost cost zero as we grew everything from seed or free cuttings. We grew QLD arrowroot and pigeon peas for nitrogen fixes, simply because they grew like weeds here. We plant, mulch with weeds or grass clippings and boom. Heat is a massive problem for us and growing 10 things early on and creating shade has been the difference between us and the other 100 people trying to do this in our district. Good luck. Trees trees trees, whether fruit, or nitrogen fixing , this will be the answer in a couple of years.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment :)
I've been living off grid for going on eight years now... if you can refrain from going to town, you will do great; however, if solitude isn't your liking, you will only destroy what your starting, unless you have money to burn...
Learn to stock up, and double up on main power parts, generators, inverters, and above all, water.
Learn how to use a gun, and be ready for Anything. Teach your children the dangers of the area you live in, and what to do in those situations.
Never take anything for granted, if its going to brake down, its going to happen at the most unconvenient times, like weekends or holidays.
Backup systems are a must.
If you make it, you'll love your lifes.
I was born in Connecticut, my two brothers were born in Massachusetts...my parents decided to move to El Paso, TX when we were still under 12, as all three of us were close in age.
I don't know anything but the Desert Southwest, and now in my 60's I am very tired of it, it has worn me down, as a Gardener and as someone who Loves to be outdoors. I watch videos where folks just plant with minimal watering because of their environment, here I am strapped to the watering-can, otherwise all would be returned to the Desert in less time than a Season passes.
I know we get mild Weather, and so Natural Disasters are highly unlikely, as most Storms just pass us by, but I am weary of it all. I now live in Las Cruces, NM, and it may be my last stop! Bless you and yours, it's a Harsh life in the Desert SW.
I visited las Cruces once. I thought I was in hell. I really dont understand why anyone wants to live in a dessert filled with rattlesnakes, scorpions and blowing sand hitting your house all night/day long.
@@davidgray1515 not to mention the Shitty City Water! LOL

❤the mountains in El Paso on the northeast side
One summer I left a big Texas city and lived in the mountains in a tent near a spring. It was unreal. Me and my dog. I had to go back to the city for two more years but ive been doing it for 14 years now. never looked back.
How exciting for your family. We homeschooled all five of our kids and seeing them now be great husbands/wives and parents made all the tough times worth it. Never quit on your dreams ❤️❤️
Wow, we are on a similar path except opposite directions. We are going from Arizona City Life to Texas Rural life also starting a homestead. We got bee hive, chickens, a goose and a small pond I built here in the city to get a taste of what is to come. Every few months we take our 5th wheel out to the land to work on the driveway and do dream walks similar to what you showed us, it is such a great feeling. We just completed our water well and clearing our drive way. Depending on the cost of power solar can be a very viable option for you guys, but with power lines so close might be cost savings to use utility power. Our cost to have power brought to us in Texas was going to be $25K plus monthly utility fees. I just finished designing our full off grid power system and the parts started coming in last week...
Good luck!
Let me tell you that LIFE ITSELF can be overwhelming. The best part is that you're all making the choice to change your lives and become more self-sufficient. It's not for everybody, but I DO believe that your sons will grow up feeling blessed for the experience of learning to be self-sufficient. Hopefully you don't try to do too much at any one time... and hopefully you can drill a well on your property, then create your own power using solar panels since they really make sense on an individual basis. Everything will work out... your sacrifices now will help create a wonderful bond amongst your family members. All the best to you.
One step at a time :)
Pomegranates are your friend, they are drought tolerant, vibrantly green, delicious and nutritional. I recommend the variety "Wonderful", we started with one, it is now huge, we started seven more with cuttings from the original. The newbies should start producing this year and we will be overproducing when they all start developing fruit. We are in southeast arizona, east of Tucson and rural. Welcome to Arizona, enjoy the adventure !!!!
That is one hot area of the country!
Carbon Cowboys is another great channel promoting regenerative agriculture and it’s absolutely possible to regenerate the land in the desert with AMP grazing techniques. Good luck!
I’ll check em out. Thanks
Great direction for your family. Homeschooling is an awesome decision. We down sized and have been off grid in the White Mtns of Arizona for over 12 years and have never looked back. Lots to learn along the way but If I could sum it up in one word it would be rewarding. Our sole source of water is rain water harvesting. Through patience and perseverance your family journey will be wonderful!
That is awesome!
The White Mountains are definitely a hidden gem of an area even if you live closer in for amenities.Still very affordable just to get out of the heat. Our agent, please refer to Tony's Everyday life.
I was looking at Show Low back around 2017 and found a pretty large parcel (at least 20 acres) listed for $80,000
Nutrioso? Do it now while you're young; you must be closer to good medical facilities once you grow old. Many homesteaders have to leave eventually because it is not for the old.
Great work, we did that 7 years ago in Wyoming. Bought 40 acres built homeschool. Best choice ever for my family God Bless
Arizona has the heat. Wyoming has the cold. Which is more hospitable? That is the question.
God provides where he guides !!!!
Your definitely meant to be doing this and I think it’s beautiful and can’t wait to see your journey !!! I wish I could’ve done this !!
And wow ! Girl you have the prettiest hair !!
Over the years my husband and I lived several times in southern Arizona, urban and rural. We both loved the time we had living rural. I wish you and your family the very best as you begin your life of self-sufficiency and look forward to being an observer of your journey.
Being a self sufficient family is a dream of many, and your family is well on the way. On another TH-cam channel it was said that another purpose of the rock damn is to slow the water and allow the top soil to be deposited thereby creating a richer soil. Thank you for your information! Be well & take care!
Living intentionally and passing it on to the next generation. What a wonderful way to live!
Welcome to Arizona. Beautiful property. Best wishes to you and your family. I'm a new sub looking forward to watching your journey. I'm very pleased you're sharing it with all of us.
Grow yourself some moringa. Get LOTS of water storage for rainwater harvesting. Solar should be awesome there. Back it up with a generator.
We love the moringa trees
Moringa trees can’t handle even a little bit of cold, I found out the hard way, the one I have left comes in for the winter.
@billcochran absolutely correct. Moringa hate the cold. We had multiple freezes this last year which hindered the growth. But they are coming back nicely now the temps have warmed up. Moringa once established can take some cold. They love it once temps are over 55 degrees. The hotter the better from what I've seen.
What is a Moringa?
@victorramosjr2445 Moringa is a tree that has 92 essential nutrients 46 antioxidants and over 20 amino acids. It a very nutritional tree. It grows fast and likes the heat.
If you do not know 'Sow the Land' I suggest you check them out. North Carolina is very different from Arizona but I think your husband might be interested in the engineering side provided by Jason, who also has plans (as in diagrams and instructions) available on his website.
Thanks I’ll check the channel out.

We prayed so long over 4 years to find a property to have our own land and home. Praying for you pretty lady!!!! We are here if you ever need us.
The best sunrises and sunsets, just epic. The monsoon last year was nothing compared to the past year before that. So much rain it was incredible God works so good!!

My first time watching your channel. Liked & subscribed 👍👍. Excited to see your progress ✌️👏
Very cool.
I wish you all the best in your journey.
I hope your dreams come true.
I just discovered your channel. I can see the lure; the land is beautiful, and the price doesn't hurt the budget. I'd be a bit concerned about heat in a warming planet. It'll be interesting to see the type of homestead you build to meet those environmental needs. Best wishes to your young family!
Congratulations on your new start! I hope to enjoy watching you all on your journey.
Best of luck. We’ve been following Doug and Stacey for sometime, but this is going to be so educational and fun to follow along. Blessings from SoCal!
God sent me here! I brought land in AZ last summer im in Wash DC debating what to do. my heart wants to homestead and move so bad! New sub here may god bless your family and your new journey!
Sounds like you are listening to the spirit! Remember, rural doesn’t have to mean isolated. You can still find community in the country :)
I just saw your channel today...Good luck on yall journey. I live on 4.5 acres I've lived here 30 years. I live near Las cruces, nm. I've raised 4 children on it with many animals to help the kids learn, teaching children the law of the land. So glad to see a young family on desert land as myself. I live 30 minutes from any city. I live off the land. Yall r so lucky to have an opportunity to try, learn, and live on. I've always lived on land, love the peace and quiet, freedom that I have. Glad yall are going with solar, and a well. Do plant as many trees around your home, will provide shade,a place for the boys to climb on and give natural beauty. Congrats!
So excited for you and your little family! I wish I had done this before we got to be so dang old! Live you Jagg & family! Leni
Good luck, y'all! God bless

Bravo to you all for making the change. We bought in Arizona in 2022. We are greening the desert too. Good luck on your journey 🌞✨
I’m proud of you all and for you! This IS the best direction for your family. I can’t say enough positive for homeschooling. You all will do well.
Hello, you just came up in my feed and I just Love homesteading channels! I am so enthralled with families that are doing this, I think it’s wonderful!!! If I were younger I would do it, I think it’s the best thing for young children to learn, it’s a very hard world out there and I think this gives them a great start, I just subscribed❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amazing! 😎
I wish I had done that, good luck !
Thank you for sharing and the very best to you and your family in your new adventure. As a Floridian who lives 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico my escape is also to the tranquility of my homestead in south east Arizona. The land will welcome you and your return to what I consider a very magical place, barren and isolated yet so full of life. Kudos to you and your husband for providing for your children, that which few will ever experience.
I notice several clips showing a hillside along the property...is that a Volcano? It really looks like one!
It’s all volcanic on the other side of the river!
best wishes guys, happy to see you starting :)
Wonderful Jessica! You and your family are going to do great and are going to be very happy, those are the best regards from all country people down at Mexico, blessings
Hi! I just found your channel. I will be subscribing to it. You look so happy there. I'm excited to see where God will lead your journey.
I'm ready to go on your ride !
Good luck to you, I need lots of trees to feel calm. Check out Primary Water. Found anywhere. It is water coming thru rock fissures from deep in the earth. There are Oceans of unlimited water. Once drilled, it is endless and will never run out. It is not the water table.
That is a beautiful spot!
That's great I dear you're all young so go for it. It is the best for children and eating food that you grow yourself.❤
Permaculture is where it’s at, no matter your climate. Wise decision for your family. God bless your efforts. ❤ sending love from Indiana.
We're in the same spot as you are only in the Pacific Northwest! We're a bit further along in the process, older and have not kids. What a beautiful lifestyle you're creating for yourselves and your family. I wish you every success and blessing.
Congratulations, sound like fun and you guys ready for this . I just wish I was there but no enough knowledge yet..
You could not have picked a better time, and you already know about the monsoons and the Mojave rattlers.
God bless you and your precious family!
We are in SE New Mexico and currently homesteading in our suburban backyard. We have been looking for land and dream of taking that leap. Following your journey ❤
Beautiful lands, and hope you're dream come true.
Good Luck 👍
