    About Gary
    ----------
Gary Ladehoff is one stroke of good luck away from making it out of poverty, and one stroke of bad luck away from losing everything. He has been living with his two-year-old daughter in the economically-depressed city of Zion, Illinois. This is a critical moment for Gary: a new job, car, and apartment fall into his lap, while a workplace accident threatens to set him back. Gary’s past struggles with addiction and the criminal justice system have led to previous setbacks. But now he’s getting help from an unlikely source: a police officer who once put Gary behind bars.

    About FIRSTHAND: Living in Poverty
    ----------
In Chicago, your birthplace often determines your destiny. Children born in one West Side census tract between 1978 and 1983 grew up to have a median annual household income of $16,000, according to Opportunity Insights. Does the American Dream exist in Chicago? In FIRSTHAND: LIVING IN POVERTY, WTTW explores intergenerational poverty in Chicago in a documentary series, reported stories, expert talks, and community discussions.
FIRSTHAND: Living in Poverty is part of the award-winning FIRSTHAND multiplatform, multi-year initiative focusing on the firsthand perspectives of people facing critical issues in Chicago.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I posted a link to a gofundme for Gary in the last hour and it was taken off you site. I don't understand why. Don't you want to help him too? What's the point of just making us watch the documentary and then denying those, who want to support him, the means to do so?

Best way to buy a car when you're poor, is for cash. I paid $700 cash for my 2002 car in 2013. A lil maintenance here and there and it's still going strong in 2021. Getting a car with payments sets you up for a possible repossession. One bout of flu and a missed paycheck or two that leads to a missed car payment so you can at least pay rent and you can kiss your new car goodbye. Been there, done that. Buy cash. That $500 down could buy you a beater. Hey, it's a chair on wheels. Doesn't need to be new or pretty. Just needs to go vroom, vroom all the way to the babysitters, work, grocery store, and home. Set that cash aside until you have enough to buy outright. 'Rent-a-Center style' living is a losing battle every time. Pay cash. Own your shit and it won't get taken away.

Watching this in 2024. Your daughter reminds me so much of my 2 1/2 year old. My dad was a single dad for a little while cause my mom left (twice) but he did remarry and it wasn’t a great marriage ..got bad when I got to high school..but for most of our lives, we had stability and structure. My daughter is literally my world. I went to college and did a lot for myself but I never knew that unconditional love until I had her. I can never understand a parent not wanting to be with their child. I’m glad I didn’t turn out to be like my (bio) mom. So when that little girl cries out “Mommy!” Oh it does something to me cause my daughter is still attached at the hip.
