The Stranglers before they were famous ,,,before punk ,were they ever punk ,no just weirdos playing weird music ,,,brilliant ,,,Peaches sounds like it was recorded down in the sewer
G Rock , I would agree after ' la Folie' lp most of their records seemed to have 'the edges' removed- still did occasional good 7"s...slightly surprised when I read they thought of J. Strummer as a possible replacement for H.C.
JJ said in an interview that he considered himself a punk but that the Stranglers were not really 'punk' per say. They fell in with the punks because they were deliberately provocative in their actions. They were older and more musically evolved than the three chord maniacs around them. But their mindsets were definitely PUNK. Jet Black told some hilarious anecdotes about they would fuck with the minds of different people when they showed up for gigs. For example, they had developed a rep for destructive, brawling shenanigans in the press and at venues. So one time instead of trashing the dressing room as was expected they all four cleaned up and vacuumed the place perfectly thus blowing the minds of the club management. I think the Stranglers may be the best group to come of those early years in England. For their music, their unapologetic attitude, their 4 distinct personalities. Just the best!!
