Great public service message. Thanks for posting. Great point that "make and model aren't critical; just carry something rather than nothing." I still old-school it with Mini MAGlite. A 1xAAA on my keychain and a 2xAAA in the pocket. Twist it shut to turn off, there's zero possibility of accidental on/off in the pocket via button presses. Inexpensive but tough. However, I may eventually upgrade to one of these new-fangled 21st-century EDC lights. One other thought: a 2-cell Mini MAGlite can serve double duty as both EDC light and kubotan. The only caveat is that using a kubotan takes martial arts training, which takes time to build. Oh well, one step at a time.
I keep one of the Olight i1r 2 keychain lights on my keys and I've given a bunch of them as gifts. Just picked up my first "real" EDC light, the S2R 2 baton and I'm using it daily around the house. Should come in handy when we get back to our seasonal camp this summer.
Another way an EDC flashlight has helped me has been in reading serial numbers that are engraved a bit too shallow on old weapons. By creating a shadow when shinning a light at an angle, it makes it easier to read those numbers. This has come in handy many times when conducting weapons inventory. And I too never leave the house without my Olight I3T EOS, Leatherman Wave (1st generation), Zippo 1941 Replica, and Benchmade 710.
3:45 I’ve never heard the flashlights with the pointed end cap are supposed to be for anything to do with a defense weapon. I’ve always seen it promoted as a window breaker
I've only ever heard them promoted as being for self-defense. Like this article: www.offgridweb.com/gear/tactical-flashlights-with-striking-bezels/ I've never heard/read about them being for breaking glass.
I couldn't agree more! I've started carrying a Sofirn C01S AAA light in my pocket everywhere I go and I use it at least once a day! I've also put a Leatherman Surge and a Sofirn SC31 Pro 18650 light in my backpack (among other things) which I also use from time to time. More weight on my back but I sure am glad I have those with me if I need them!
The C01S is one of my favorite AAA flashlights... inexpensive, smooth action and super light on the keychain. Although I think a lot of people would be better off with something that has usb charging (I give the Nitecore Tube to family members, which is even lighter).
I have a Sofirn Sc31 Pro as well, but added the magnetic tailcap and swapped out the tube for a shorter version that takes an 18350 - basically 1.25" shorter than an 18650. The entire light is shorter than your thumb so is very pocketable, and runs the gamut from 1 lumen to over 2000 lumen, either w/smooth or stepped ramp thanks to the Anduril interface
Excellent points. I've been carrying a Manker E02 for a few months now and I love it. It's got low/high/turbo, plus six levels of moonlight mode and lockout mode.
I totally agree, I always carry the S1R baton 2 and the S2R baton 2. And just order the M2R pro for when I need a bigger light. For example when I walk the dog in the evening/night.
@@txtoolcrib I was thinking where I live you can't carry any weapons, really nothing (even the Victorinox will get to a criminal record smh) Than a flashlight will be become a self-defence tool. That is why I always carry the m2r pro, in my jacket or pants pocket.
Once again I agree! Love the non linear strobe Fenix and streamlight for example use that makes it even more difficult for the eye to adapt to! Sadly my favorite light the nitecore srt 7 and P05 (nitecore and most other brands for that matter) has a constant speed of strobing... And I also agree crenelation is a bit overrated and the more aggressiv it is the harder it usually gets to carry... But all decent sized flashlights with an aluminum body make great kubotans (tool for attacking pressure points) for self defense. Merry Christmas from France to you all and to your families!
I agree, non-linear strobe lights are better as a defensive tool. The newer Nitecore lights do have those non-linear strobe modes, like the P20i. The SRT7 was my duty light for around five years and I loved it.
Great points my good man!!! Been carrying a Wave since 98'. Lost it in 2003. Bought another one. Still use daily. Always on my belt :) Bought the second gen with locking tools, I don't like it as much. I like the locking tool safety side of it, but it doesn't carry the same. Probably just me Lol. As for flashlights, just got an S2R II and a Perun Mini. Love them. Magnetic Charging is sweet. BTW as an economy option, I just found Trustfire MC12. Same as Perun Mini. 16340 flashlight. Mag charging, 1000LM, headband etc...$20 a piece on Aliexpress. I ordered three. Can't wait to get them. I will definitely compare those to the Perun Mini. Cheers
Couldn't agree more Ben👍 and also a huge fan of fenix, o-light and sure fire flash lights. Although one of my favorites is actually the 12 dollar "ozark trail" head lamps from wall mart. Comes with 3 duracell AAA batteries and from my experience are pretty darn durable.
Yup I’ve been carrying a pistol for 10 years and I just last month got it to flash lights . Can’t believe it took me so long to realize how important it is to edc flash light . @@txtoolcrib Agreed, the little Maratac AAA has a subtle steampunk look to it... like an instrument from a nineteenth century steamship. It’s very cool - I have the copper version. Presumably pathogens don’t live long on copper or brass, so they are inherently antiseptic as well (also why I love the raw brass space pen). Thanks for the great psa on flashlights! Good video, having a phone gives you a strong basic light already. The strobe is a good idea though, i have a security baton flashlight that's a great step up and legal carry on Australia.
If you hit someone in the face with a crenelated bezel vs a non-crenelated bezel there will be no significant difference. If you are installing and removing a light in the pocket of your jeans 100 times a week a crenelated bezel will eventually destroy your jeans. Crenelations have two purposes; decoration OR as a means to identify you forgot to turn your light off before setting it down on the bezel. For self-defense purposes they're pure BS. Now, if the crenelations were 1.5 inches in length or more you may have an advantage. But then it would probably be considered a weapon.
All the flashlights up to the double A's could be replaced with your phone flashlight. The others are only usefull if you find yourself outside at night a lot (navigate, self defense and camping). I dont see a reason to bring a full flashlight to an officejob, bday party, gym or anywhere in the daytime or even at night in a luminated city/town when you are only outside when you move between your car door and a building door
