    I just love the layers of evil depicted in this game. Arthas, despite being part of the Scourge, wants the downfall of Legion, another powerful and wretched army. When bad people fight bad people, it shows depth in writing, because it's so easy and jaded to make good vs bad, but for bad people to have goals that do not align shows the nuance within the concept of evil itself. And the fact that Arthas, an irredeemable villain, is having a threatening and influential exchange with Illidan, a vicious antihero to the core, says something quite deep about the level of writing that went behind this vibrant, cartoonish looking game. Ah the good old days

      No. Arthas is stronger because he can go toe to toe with someone who needs a moon well to supplement his strength.

      He'd win but then it wouldn't mean he's stronger. He got an outside help.

      momo xmomox if he needs the moon well to fight on even terms he’s weaker. This must he why arthas defeated him on the final mission of frozen throne.

    • @reychop
      @reychop 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      momo xmomox they are evenly matched here. If illidan uses the moon well he would win but that doesn’t mean he’s stronger.
      Arthas only died at WOW because of blizzard’s writing. Arthas was already powerful before becoming the lich king. Imagine his strength with nerzhul’s power combined.
      That is if they were evenly matched here, arthas would definitely be stronger after gaining The lich king’s power. Of course Illidan had a chance to grow in WOW.
      But in the frozen throne, Arthas is stronger.
      Also, I could use your own logic and say Illidan only became powerful in wow due to plot. XD

    I'd always wondered what the big deal with this encounter was except two of the most badass figures of the game meeting for the first time. It dawned on me years later (yes, even after TFT) that Arthas had traveled from one continent to another on his own just to set up the defeat of the Legion.

    • @XiyuYang
      @XiyuYang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      The lich king commands him to. The lich king has his own schemes and undermining the legion was a part of it.

    • @brightestlight9462
      @brightestlight9462 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      the lich king knew about illidan, since he has planet-wide telepathy, and wanted to thwart the legion without the legion knowing. the way to do that was to get someone else to do it for him--in this case, illidan. he knew that if illidan got the skull, he'd end up coming into conflict with tichondrius--and it's stated in the lore that if tichondrius had been there the legion would have probably won. without the skull, however, tichondrius would have murdered illidan.

    But looking back at their confrontation in front of the Frozen Throne as the gates open, if Illidan didn't even bother flying, they would have "fought forever"
    Cause in what I understood from Illidan's fighting style is that he excels greatly in melee combat...

    • @BenterKoux
      @BenterKoux 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      pretty sure Arthas became stronger in wc3 with every closer step to the frozen throne. And in WoW Arthas was in his citadel and didnt seek for more power whilst Illidan actually did something meanwhile. So he bacame stronger and Arthas was a lazy bitch as lich king.

    • @Zero60133
      @Zero60133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Personally after i was done reading Illidan's lore(never mind the numerous retcons), i always saw him more a mage than a fighter. He was a sorcerer that started studying fel magic, then took warglaives of Azzinoth and taught himself how to use them alongside his magical powers. Arthas was trained by some of most skilled and powerful warriors that ever lived and carved a path of destruction through 2 kingdoms(3 if we count Dalaran) and faced powerful minions of Old Gods and even earned Anub'arak's respect(last two he did while weakened).
      Not to mention he was wearing saronite armor which has strong magical resistances and was in close proximity of Lich King, which made him more powerful than ever before he merged with LK.
      p.s
      They wanted to make Arthas fight with Illidan longer and make it a proper cinematic, but they didn't had time. So they scraped together this cinematic, so don't be surprised that even that cinematic does rather bad job telling how things went in lore.

      Setting up the Legion's defeat. He couldn't openly act against them however or else the Legion would have torn him and Ner'zhul apart. Jaina would not have trusted him, Thrall would know better than to fuck with the big glowing demon skull, The Night elves at this point are still shooting Both humans AND Undead on sight so a human on a skeleton horse would have been a 2 for 1 special to them.
      But The Lich King sees everything and told him who he had to go to. Illidan was the only one who would destroy the skull, and that NEEDED to happen for the Legion's corruption to fail.
      But to avoid them catching on, he needed to Travel to Kalimdor in secret, without the knowledge of the Burning Legion.

      Ethan Laun That is just bad writing from Blizzard in general making the story black and white. People try to act like “no this is a morally grey story” when in reality it a garbage children storyline. Illidan in Warcraft 3 was a power hungry and what make warcraft story grey that he has his own agenda that doesn’t involved good or evil. He could careless if evil win just as long as he achieved his ultimate power. Blizzard change this to such a Kerrigan storyline “power to stop an unstoppable foe” what a joke. We beat legion 3 times and 2 times Illidan did nothing while Malfurion was saving the world.

      Illidan's lore has been retconned few times. WC3 Illidan was power hungry person that wanted power and to prove himself. Burning Crusade Illidan was a madman that lost his mind to fel magic and couldn't deal with losing to weakened Arthas, he also committed lot of atrocities to dranei people as well. Then in Legion they finally retconned him into some sort of savior.

    • @Ryan-sn3uo
      @Ryan-sn3uo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zero60133 Retcon =/= Revealing motive. They didn't retcon what he did, it's more like they showed you a different side of him. Tho I may agree it was somewhat weird when it was revealed.

    • @Zero60133
      @Zero60133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've been following Wow lore for years now. And i know what retcon is. It is to take previously established facts and change them to suit a new idea or lore you want to make. There were numerous retcons through the history of Wow, what they did with Illidan was just one of many.
      Illidan wasn't a hero originally, he was always for himself, his brother and Tyrande being his soft spots but sating his magical addiction and proving his power was his first motive. In old lore he created new Well of Eternity since he was unable to give up his magical addiction and murdered those that tried to stop him in doing that, also in older lore he joined Azshara and Burning Legion willingly but defected after realizing they are going to lose.
      Overall i don't dislike his new lore too much, it was retconned in generally decent way as far as retcons go tho. But i am still unable to accept how Wow treats "Lord" Illidan as some sort of savior but again that is because to me he still power hungry extremist from his old lore.

    This is the story I love warcraft 3 and illidan I love. His tragedy is that he keep telling himself he was destined to be his people savior and he is his own master but legion manipulate and play him like a fool.
    Legion ruin that aspect because illidan is some mary sue who know it all and see it all

      Illidan was never an honest servant of the Legion. First he worked as a double agent. Then he destroyed Tichondrius. Then Kiljaeden appeared to make him an offer he couldn't refuse (besides destroying the Scourge wouldn't be a bad thing). After he failed, he was hiding in Outland at Black Temple and preparing for a big siege coming from Burning Legion. Then he fails at communication with Alliance + Horde and gets killed. Everybody realised they killed the wrong guy. Blizzard fixes their mistake and bring him back in Legion, except they make him a full hero, while before he was doing his stuff for power, to survive and to make Tyrande love him.

      Even though I agree that it's pretty obvious that Illidan wasn't really siding with the Burning Legion, he was too much of a Mary Sue in Legion. In TBC he was just wasted, just as Kael'thas. Both shouldn't have been killed or villainized in that expansion.

    Illidan is much stronger and smart than Arthas even before receiving the Skull of Gul'Dan, but the developers substitute Illidan in the Frozen Throne and make him a loser and humiliate him for that. I hate them, Knife in the back betrayal of a favorite hero . . .

      As far as Warcraft lore goes i only know of the Warcraft 3 games (Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne). And in many aspects the story of Frozen Throne was too inferior to that of Reign of Chaos. And the rivalry between Arthas and Illidan was one of the things that was mishandled. But the downfall in the game started with Illidan. Deciding to make a deal with Kil'Jaden was a stupid idea. Illidan likes power yes but i found it stupid that he would be willing to put his fate in the hands of a demon like Kil'Jaden. Bad deal all over. Then it became extremely easy to open portals and travel between worlds. What took half a campaign in Reign of Chaos to accomplish....in Frozen Throne required nothing. Illidan could just open these things like it was nothing. The Blood Elf campaign had potential but Garithos being a racist prick and all that....seemed weird. Humans really werent well portrayed in FT. As for Night Elves....Maiev was the only logical being. She was right to hunt Illidan after he attacked Night Elf encampments. Yet Furion and Tyrande just let him go. Weak leadership on their end. And now we go to the final duel between Arthas and Illidan. 1V1 duel. Illidan should have won. Arthas was severly weakened from having his powers drained...and in the final mission the Lich King didnt restore those powers fully. So considering that in ROC Arthas and Illidan were equals....in FT with Arthas being weakened and Illidan being stronger thanks to the Skull of Guldan....Illidan should have won.

    I wish Reforged Illidan and Arthas will be voiced by WOW/HOTS VA’s in this cutscene.

      A year late... they aren't, just graphically overhauled, audio remastered and they changed some camera angles/cutscenes which everyone cries over except me. Do I agree with every change they made? No, but some are better and some are worse. I love Reforged.

    I can't believe the Arthas fanboys in the comments section. Yeah I like Arthas as well, but facts are facts.
    The moonwell healing Illidan is irrelevant. Both Arthas and Illidan clearly stated that they were equal.
    Post Frostmourne pre Lich King Arthas is EXTREMELY crafty. If he believed that he could defeat Illidan, he would've drawn Illidan away from the moonwell.
    Arthas didn't get any power boosts between his first and second fight with Illidan.
    Meanwhile, Illidan absorbed the skull of Guldan and transformed into a half demon, half night elf. He literally went from not being able to scratch Tichondrius to becoming powerful enough to slay Tichondrius.
    The full story is this. Blizzard fell short on time to complete Frozen Throne. They wanted a proper CGI animated fight between Illidan and Arthas. But time was a luxury they couldn't afford. That's why their fight was rendered with in-game models.
    During their battle in Northerend, Illidan was in COMPLETE control. He got cocky and began to toy with Arthas. Arthas managed to land a fatal blow purely by fluke and defeated Illidan.

      the very nature of arthas' sword is exponential. it's a never ending growth of power--every soul he collects, whether from killing people, or from every undead he commants, adds to the endless supply within frostmourne, increasing his power. arthas never stopped growing in power, and in addition to that, he got an ADDITIONAL boost from being near the frozen throne.
      of course, specifically during that campaign he was losing power, he had GAINED power since their last meeting, and was able to attain those heights again, and then some. it showcases just how insane frostmournes' power was, that it was able to keep up growth wise with illidan's growth after consuming the skull.

      Arthas did not need to flex his power here. He only needed to match Illidan, he wasn't trying to kill him. After all, he was trying to get Illidan to sabotage the Legion. So it's certainly likely Arthas was holding back. Another indicator is, Illidan is slightly out of breath, but Arthas isn't.

      Warcraft 1. Orcs invade azeroth through portal, and take hold of stormwind, killin king layne. Humans flee to lordaeron. Orcs win, the end.
      Warcraft 2. Alliance created between all human kingdoms dwarfs gnomes and blood elves to defend against orcs. Orcs take trolls as allies, enslave dragons, bring warlocks. Leader of the orcish warlocks broke away to follow his own objective caused orc armies to lose critical battle. Alliance gain advantage, pushes and takes hold of the dark portal, go through and destroy it from the other side, the army got trapped and the orc homeworld started fallin apart. Many orcs were still left on azeroth, but scatterred and had no leaders. Overall alliance victory. The end
      The army which went on suicide mission to orc world never came back and was believed to be dead until WoW legion expac.
