one can probably analyse this fugue for a decade and still learn from this ingenious counterpoint. all-round a magnificent work and truly incredible for the time. it absolutely reads like an organ piece, which makes me want to go listen to more of his organ works. at some point I will hopefully know all of reger! but until then I will enjoy the enrichment the Bach variations, choral and sacral works and all this magnificent pieces of art provide. also: 'das ist wieder ein ganz tolles ding' is hilarious and very reminiscent of Beethovens humorous way of talking about himself and his work.

Ich bewundere die Produktivität Regers. Wenn ich mir vostelle, das er die "Hiller-Fuge" an einem einzigen Tag geschrieben hat (Blomstedt), ist das unglaublich. Ein Mann, der viel zu früh verstorben ist, der von der katholischen Kiche exkommuniziert wurde (!) , hat solche tollen Werke hinterlassen! Mögest du jetzt das "himmliche Bier" trinken, das irdische hat dir sicher gesundheitlich geschadet.;-) Tolle Variationen, ich kannte sie nicht, toll, das ihr sie hier zugäglich gemacht habt. Danke!
He could hardly ever have slept! He got to his Op. 100 before he was 30, and his opus numbers were often sets of pieces, not just single works. However, Reger himself believed that his time on this earth was short, and he made haste before it was, as he rightly foresaw, over all too soon.
Dieses Opus wird m.E. massiv unterschätzt. Es ist progressiver als die Beethoven-Variationen. Ich habe noch eine alte LP mit der Einspielung durch die Kontarsky-Brüder. Danke für das Upload!

Es holt den "Orgel-Reger", wie ich ihn gerne mit Bezug zu ebenjenem Schaffen, das doch nochmal ganz anders funktioniert, nenne, aus der Orgelwelt heraus und macht diese Art von Musik einem ganz anderen Publikum zugänglich. Was die Orgelwelt mit den opp. 29, 33, 56, 57, 59, 63, 65, 73, 127, 135b, ... und den ganzen Choralphantasien etc. hat, hat die Klavierwelt vielleicht mit den opp. 81 und 114, aber vor allem mit diesem 96! Es würde mich wirklich nicht wundern, wenn es ein transkribiertes Orgelwerk wäre - die Vollgriffigkeit, das wie unter dem Video beschrieben dezidiert Progressive (wie es interessanterweise häufig in den Orgelwerken der Fall ist, die Klavierwerke bleiben ja sehr brav und Brahmsisch) und nicht zuletzt die Gattungen.
Damn those giant annoying chords! Like he's hammering the piano, I can't hear anything but clusters of inexpressive notes. It reads like a harmony exercise, a bad one. I love Reger, but I'll stick with his Bach's Variations any day and it's in the same tonality.
