Our Most BRUTAL Sail So Far - A Tale of Two Realities As a New Skipper Sailing San Francisco Bay

  • We are Nathan and Katie. We just started sailing and fulfilled our dream of sailing underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. We are new to sailing and love every minute of it. This channel will document our journey sailing in the bay by featuring different destinations.
    In this video, we faced the biggest challenge sailing San Francisco bay so far. This is not supposed to happen in such a beautiful afternoon. We’re not in the pacific ocean, but in the middle of the San Francisco bay. This is the harsh reality to me as a new skipper choosing the wrong course , driving the boat against strong flood current in the wrong place, at the wrong time. This bay is definitely the great training ground.

    guys, thank you for the video. A word of advice when sailing. Use the traveler first. Keep the mainsheet tight and travel to leward first, then if still overpowered then start to let the main sheet out. Keep going you guys will get used to it Well done

      Excellent advice. I think traveler is more “fine tune” control and keep twist the same. I'll move it to leeward before easing the main next time. Thanks!

      @@novaturient-sailing When lowering the traveler you can keep the flat sail shape but depower it. If you ease the main before the traveler you create more belly in the sail. It is fine adjustment but has a substantial effect in stronger winds. Please try it and see the difference next time, you will be surprised. More vids please :-)

    You guys are awesome. Just completed my ASA 101/103 on SF Bay with modern sailing out of Sausalito. Great instructors. Looking forward to getting out there too. As Jeff said reef early and reef often and those life jackets should be on.

    Nice boat handling. Nothing like merino wool for warmth. Keeps warm when it gets wet too.

    Thank you. Your honest sharing appreciated. I would have done differently. Take early avoidance action to give tanker clear signal of my intention. Secondly, I would not stress my riggings sailing so high and heeling at breaking speed. Slow is cool. You never know your rigging may give way at the most undesirable moment, e. g. in close proximity to the path of the tanker. My mantra is always have lifejacket on as soon as you leave the berth or mooring to sail the seas no matter how far the sailplan is. It is just me a rookie sailor myself. Just sharing, not criticizing or preaching.

    Use to do beer can races across the bay in the 90's. Had to be ready for everything. Great to see how you handled the mixed forces. Good for you on early reefing. Enjoying your videos and looking back at your journey. Fair winds.

    One of the best improvements on my Catalina 30 when I was sailing San Franisco Bay was a new flat traveler. It made it much easier to fine tune the main.

    • @novaturient-sailing
      @novaturient-sailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re absolutely right. Our focus in new season will be how to trim properly in different conditions and fine tune the sails. That’s something we haven’t got chance to do.

    I sail on the east coast in NJ .There was a young couple that sailed a 31ft sailboat next to my slip . They were new to sailing and went out in 22k winds . When they got back they wanted to give up sailing . I convinced them to give it another try . This time in 10 k wind’s until they get better at sail trim . It worked !

      Great advice for beginners. We did lots of preparation including mentally for stronger wind normally in the afternoon. In the summer time, it’s small craft advisory almost every afternoon. We don’t mind heeling but sometimes the choppy waves make us uncomfortable. So I figure our focus needs to be proper sail trim for the boat to efficiently power through rough waves.

    Try moving your traveler down wind, it may take some of the heel out of the boat in a strong wind. Good video!

      No, I found SF Bay Area sailors to be quite incompetent when offshore to Baja, MX; when there was any average Pacific ocean swell they did not know how to handle it.
