- I've seen several comparison video, but most of them were outdated, so I tried to do one myself.
Also for some of the Vocaloid cover in the video I didn't find the person who did the cover, but as soon I found them I'll be be putting them here in the description!

This is really interesting, you can hear the vocaloid quality in all the providers' voices but it's clearly different. I think it's cool that the vocaloids are still distinctly artificial.
Early vocaloid "robotic" sounds especially from Miku makes it perfect for two things
1. Cutesy things (World is Mine, etc)
2. Surreally creepy shit (from bacterial contamination, dark woods circus, to d o r i m e)

Dex’s voice provider sounds exactly like dex 18:23
It's because the company wanted Dex to sound exactly like nostraightanswer.
A lot of Vocaloids seem to be like immortalisations of the singer

( th-cam.com/video/K9fSditAzqY/w-d-xo.html ) It's a duet between the two of them, and it's really hard to tell the difference between the two at some points! I seriously wish the guy got more recognition, those songs of his are BANGERS.
To elaborate on my previous reply, it seems to be a trend that Vocaloid Companies/singers have their Vocaloids look and/or sound like the VP. For instance Nemu (Yumemi Nemu), who's VP retired as an idol a year after Nemu's release. Or Sachiko, who's VP (Kobayashi Sachiko) is aging and could make the decision to retire at any moment.
For others it could just be a marketing tactic, like GAKT and Gakupo, Meiko and well- Meiko. YOHIO and YOHIOloid. PIKO and Piko. Or they may just not have had any name/appearance/voice thought up.
I genuinely can't hear Miku when I hear Saki Fujita. Their voices are simply not the same I swear lmao. The first Vocaloid I can *actually* notice the similarities with their voice provider in this list (excluding Miriam) is Gumi lol.

She's a voice actress that can make many different voices. There's a video of her using the voice she used to make minus. Try that one
Look for the same song that was viewed for her voice actress in the beginning of the song you can here miku in her soft voice

Most of them don't use their natural voices to record but rather try to match them with the art. For example, Miku was meant to sound "cute".
Fun fact: Gumis voice providers nickname was gumi, that's why the vocaloid is called that

I think this may apply to most Vocaloids tbh, I would say with some exceptions such as Gackt, who had an established fan base before Gakupo.

Everyone's talking about how different Miku's voice sounds from her seiyuu or how Kaito's seiyuu is so similar to his voice, but what about Luka's compared to Yuu Asakawa?? It is so unbelievably different, the pitch, the way her voice sounds. I kind of wish they kept Luka's voice as elegent as Asakawa's in the beginning of her being a vocaloid voice provider.

It had mostly to do with how VOCALOID1 worked compared to later versions. VOCALOID1 was basically a completely different synthesizer, using a completely different method of synthesis than VOCALOID2 onwards. VOCALOID2 onwards takes the recorded samples, and basically stuffs those samples directly into the engine, where it chops them up and puts them back together into new sequences, thus is why they sound more human. VOCALOID1 wasn’t like that. Instead of directly using samples, synthesis of VOCALOID1 instead relied on the analysis of samples to create what was completely a computer-generated voice. Think of it this way - pretend for a second that the VOCALOID1 engine just produced static without any input from human samples, but as samples were added and assigned to certain phonemes, the VOCALOID software analyzes those samples, and instead of static noise, it begins to sound more like the samples it’s analyzing. Give it enough samples, and it begins to sound like an actual voice rather than static. That’s not _actually_ how it works exactly, but hopefully the analogy makes sense. Essentially the VOCALOID1 software is a lot more artificial than future versions, and when you really think about it, all of the VOCALOID1 vocals are basically the same voice, but produce wildly different results based on the samples it was given to analyze, making for a distinct product, if that makes any sense.

Fun fact: Before Hime and Mikoto were given names, they were called "cute" and "cool".
@@mozzapple These terms are also what replaced V4's "Gender Factor"/"GEN" parameter in V5.
Moving the parameter closer to "Cool" makes the voice deeper and more masculine sounding. Moving it closer to "Cute" makes the voice higher and more feminine sounding.
AS of March 2020 this video is still current. The only new Vocaloids on the way are Yanhe and Ling updates :/
Supposedly a lot of companies have confirmed they are still working on stuff that might be released for V5. Apparently Internet Co. said they weren't gonna do anything for V5 but then they did a flip and said they're still working on stuff or smth like that.
Yao Luniang hasn't really been confirmed dead. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that means she might still have a chance of being released.

I think that the comparison isn't too accurate because:
1- Tuning - Since the VP always sung like that their entire life, they know how to hit the right vocals easily, while a user of the vocaloid software doesn't know what are those notes exactly, if both versions were attuned at the same notes, that would make the comparison more accurate (that would, almost impossible, almost), and would make easier to see the differences.
2- Skill level - Yamaha said that the output of the program depends on the skill of the user (take as example the velvet version of Servant of Evil and the remastered ones that did make it on project diva/mirai), but the version of the synth also influences the output, so it would need to do comparision with all the available versions of the bank with the same notes/sustain (if applicable).
3- Music - Use the same version of song, without vocal support if possible (a range of frequencies that amplifies the vocals without compromising the equalization of the song, usually arranged on the same pattern as the vocals, but on different base notes to make more powerful the vocals or other effects), as it might do some difference.

this video is 3 and a half years old. Crazy how there's been BARELY new voicebanks released since.
However, that doesn't mean the same for other softwares. I'd love to see a revised version with CeVIO, Synthv, whatever the hell else their is out there. I totally forgot how entertaining these kinds of videos were, this was my shit in 6th grade.

I asked about this (i think its one of the top comments so you can find it easily). Possible answers are:
•Vocaloid is a very old software so earlier Vocaloids probably sounded froggy because of lower-quality equipment.
•The tuning might be a part of it
•V1 is basically the engine analyzing samples and not really directly using them (something like that, read the replies on my other comment I mentioned).
If you notice, all V1's sound pretty froggy. Even the English ones like Miriam.
