We have 4 full blood chow chows & they are all super sweet snugglers. Our groomer has never had a problem. She says they are kind & are perfect clients. We also rescued a Chow Akita mix, he lived till 18. Best dog ever. The reason I feel in love with the chow breed.

I used to work with a Chinese lady, and I told her I had a Chow-chow, so she asked me why he was stinky. Apparently the name "Chow-chow" sounds similar to the Chinese word for stinky. 😀

Many years ago I used to volunteer for “Adopt a Chow Foundation!” They were all rescued from kill shelters in Southern California, as their original owners surendered them. Many were also Chow mixes. The most beautiful dog I ever encountered in my life was a Chow and Shiba Inu mix named “Princess,” but she was so afraid and skittish, but never aggressive. The only one that showed aggressive tendencies was a Chow Shar Pei mix named “China Girl,” but my partner at the time brought the best out in her and she was okay and happy on our walks together! All the other Chow Chows and Chow mixes were great dogs! 🐶❤️

They are great dogs once they accept you, I think that there is where many go wrong.
The pup needs the time to like you, and then you ill have a naturally good but dominant behaving dog.
As long as you know youre on top of there dominance, some will explain it extreme and some almost none but you know what you have quick, then theyre very nice dogs.
You can actually train the guard out of them, its what u prefferb and what fits youre life. But there will always still be some instinct from a guard dog left in most however.
If i didnt prefferb to have a watch dog i would myself look for another breed. I think that is allways the most important to consider, what breed fits ur personality and lifestyle, not ur estethics.

i have a chowchow and she is very sweet and likes attention from people. but she also needs some "me time", and doesn't like being surprised from behind (she never attacked me for it though, she just doesn't like it). i think, as with ANY dog, you need to set some boundaries with chows, and learn and respect theirs. grooming also helps, although some dogs have less patience for it than others.

I also have chows and I sometimes forget that their guard dogs. One of my chows doesn't like being approached just like yours(He still isn't hostile, more playful), my other chow doesn't mind it, I think it's because I was hands on, hugging and picking him up as a puppy, that he doesn't really do anything. With supervision, my chows don't bite or display hostility. I was surprised that chows had such a reputation 😅. Their still protective, my dogs just haven't attacked anyone so I forgot that they are a dangerous breed. Still love them❤

I think many people are overzealous and underestimate many breeds. You have to do your research and be prepared for potential hiccups. When you choose a challenging breed, you need to be dedicated to give that dog a good life and thorough training. If you can’t, it’s best to be honest and adopt a breed know for docility.

  • @truth528

Yes!! You are the only person who has said the fact about Chows not liking to be spooked. Even if it’s a mild such case. I am a fanatic of most dogs but there are only 3 dogs I won’t put my name to and Chowder are number 1. I’ve witnessed first hand the results of a startled Chow. It was not pretty and we had been around this chow all day and we were well known by him. My buddy got 80 stitches and my other friend had to put his chow to sleep. It was a bad day.

I prefer the original Chow dog. The modern version looks more like a long haired Shar Pei dog. The poor things can barely look through their eyes as the eyes are squished under skin folds and all that fur. Can they actually still hunt and guard if they can barely see? Perhaps they are aggressive due their impared vision and are grumpy because of it.

@Animal-Watch I haven't thanks. I've been so worried and sad this week. I'm in the US, but I did reach out to upstate new york training. I just feel so helpless at the moment.

Grooming a chow chow is not done this way. These tools are not used. At all.... very unprofessional.

My neighbor from a long time ago had a chow chow, it ended up biting her and they had to get rid of it. They aren't good dogs.
