Plot twist:
This competition isn't real, but something struck Rowan, he wanted to be nice and give back a little something to them, but he's ego couldn't stand that, so he made this whole thing up where they won reasonable awards, but he still seems to get the best things.
Somewhere deep down in Rowan’s crazy mind this would actually make sense

This is the only thing that remotely makes sense. No way this store with five total employees and razor thin margins can afford even the $500 cash gift, let alone the approximately $100k of other stuff.

Yep, I know the feeling exactly. As the official VP of Awards at my company, I awarded myself a Model X P100D a few months ago for "longest nap in the office during business hours". It replaced the 2015 Model S that I was awarded for "most reverted commits in source control during one day".

I used to work at (out of business radio store mall shack), way back, when they had a computer center. The store manager would change the sales ticket and claim many of the computer sales to himself (claiming he talked to them first). If one would happened to be returned, he would then assign the refund charge back to the original salesmen while keeping the sale to himself (thus we would end the month with huge negatives). We worked commission, he didn't. After about 3 months of this we learned that corporate had put out a 'most computers sold' promotion and the winner got a two-week paid cruise, which he FORGOT to mention to us until after he was awarded the trip.
This video pretty much summed up his announcement to us.
Watching this again, after the 2023 reveal, brings so much light to the situation. Lol

Something similar happened to me and my family years ago. The credit union we were going to held an annual party for all members and their families to attend, as well as the employees. It had a few fun but simple games to play and some snack foods, but nothing exciting. However, everyone was staying because they had promised to have random drawings at the end to give away a bunch of cool prizes. However, when they drew the names, it ended up being basically employees only winning! Needless to say, it left a sour taste in our mouths and we left that credit union after that...

Benefits, prizes and union negotiations were being manipulated to give maximum returns to management. Kinda hard to smile after that.
I still remember asking our health&safety representative about what constitutes legitimate back pain during a health&safety meeting. The explanation was vague on purpose because when I pressed for details I was not only ignored the first 2 times but I started asking the questions way louder so everyone could hear me, both the representatives and the managers gave me death stares and basically asked me to shut up.
By the way I got fired for "lack of trust".... I was also nominated several times as employee of the quarter.
