Thank you for a Great upload! My question is how tough is your string? I restrung my 108 bead, crystal mala with a cotton cord which was labelled as being for necklaces, necklace string? or something like that. After a short period of use I noticed the string started stretching and then broke. I even lost a bead or two! It took quite a bit of time and effort, especially with putting a knot accurately as you did. I used a similar technique using a pointed instrument like a pencil tip to guide the knot into place after each bead. Now I'm deterred from doing it again for fear of another breakage.
Mala beads were used by monks to count their mantras-that’s it! blings and using stone beads or crystal beads was something that was added later when it became a trend to use them as a fashion accessory.
Great video and very informative! I've been planing to make a set of prayer beads to honor my goddess for a little while and have seen several different styles out there. I didn't really know how to make my own but your video came up when searching YT and you explain the process very well. I bought the supplies and am super excited to get started. I wish the potomic bead website had some more choices for the guru beads and tassels though.
We have over a dozen styles of Guru beads and 25+ styles of tassels, which is more than almost anywhere online. Were you not able to find them on www.potomacbeads.com?
Potomac Bead Company Yes I was on the Potomac Bead Company website. There were some great choices of the tassels and guru beads I had just been hoping to find a black onyx bead and solid black tassel and didn't see either when I searched. I did end up getting something I think I will like though and like I said am very excited to get started making my mala beads.
alright I have learned some things on this and it seems that I was that was wrong. it bothered me that there wasn't enough beads because I thought that they had to be in numeric order of 9 with 108 being preferred, but not so . 8presses like button
Amy, I replied to the original poster Clarity Seer which stated that Christians should beware of the new age & paganistic "crap". I consider Buddhism more of a philosophy, not pagan, but ok I see your technical point. I wasn't trying to argue with you...I take issue with people who think their way is the only path to enlightenment. Me? I'm a hippie, agnostic pagan, and all round heathen.
Check out the definition for paganism at dictionary.com: noun 1. (no longer in technical use) one of a people or community observing a polytheistic religion, as the ancient Greeks 2. a member of a religious, spiritual, or cultural community based on the worship of nature or the earth; a neopagan 3. DISPARAGING and OFFENSIVE. (in historical contexts) a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim; a heathen. an irreligious or hedonistic person. an uncivilized or unenlightened person. Pagan is only an overarching title for "outside" belief systems for Fundamentalist Christians. Outside of their communities, describing organized, traditional religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Shintoism, as "pagan" is quite offensive. It's like Muslims calling all non-Muslims as "Infidels". It is actually pretty offensive to neopagans and shamanistic religions too, because it lumps them together with the "organized" religions. I know you didn't mean any offense, but yes, that term is offensive. Perhaps you grew up in a Christian family and community where this was never made clear.
Finally someone who can give an informative tutorial when it comes to necklace making. Thank you :)

Awesome teacher you are. Many thank you's. Blessings.
I prefer the hand-knotting technique. For some reason I'm not so good with using the tools. Thanks so much!
Very nice finished product. Time-consuming, but well done.
Just so you know malas are made with 108 beads. Love the video.
Hi There, could you tell me what the significance of 108 beads is? Thanks

How can you undo knotted beans or un-string knotted beads?
You would need to cut the thread between every bead.

I have the hardest time keeping the bead where I want it while I'm trying to knot. I guess it just takes some practice.
As it cliche it may sound but I couldn't agree more that practice makes perfect! Just enjoy beading, Faith ^_^

Way to much paganism new age crap for a Christian beware........
+clarity seer It's a Buddhist tradition, not new age or pagan.
And Buddhism has been around a heck of alot longer than any abrahamic mythology.
Perhaps people should beware of you for being so judgmental and closed-minded.
