Holy shit dude! And here I thought that I was good for making it all the way to 88.000 & broke my old 87.000 point record a few weeks back.
1:40 Stage 1 cleared with 5,280 points and double ship
1:57 First challenging stage (Stage 3) - first extra life earned during this stage (20,000 points)
14:36 Eighth (and final) challenging stage (Stage 31) - the order loops after this point. Note the Enterprise-like enemies!
16:52 Eight extra lives in reserve - this is the max the game will display. More will be earned but won't be displayed onscreen. Note that on an actual arcade machine the last ship would be cut in half - the emulation is a little off here.
36:48 One million points reached on Stage 78. After this point extra ships are no longer awarded. High score stops at 999,980.
42:02 Both ships destroyed on Stage 89. On Player 1 for about 25 seconds before going back to Player 2.

Practice makes perfect. Before you know it, you'll hit stage 50, then 100 and then eventually 255 ("potential" kill-screen).
This is now again the official MAME WR for this track as it was discovered the 20 million score recently achieved was proven to be illegitimately done.

I played this game in the Arcade and it flipped until level 0 and no more enemies came out.

The emulation/arcade records are tracked separately. For MAME you just need to record using WolfMAME106 with the Galaga romset.
That is the arcade record yes. This is however the emulation record for MAME.
I remember that only 5 lives allowed for this game in 80's. Anyway, this player's skill is so good. Hit/Miss ratio is 86.6%

There are a couple of people capable of beating his arcade record. Andrew Laidlaw scored 4.5mil on tournament settings (5 lives only)
The score seems pretty beatable, I'm surprised it has stood since 1998. The arcade machine I used to play at would almost always crash at stage 0 - the game would do a hard reset.
I'm counting up all the points you're losing on poorly done bonus stages and it almost makes me wanna throw up in my mouth a little. o.O
what is the essential cabinet or version of galaga to play on and get the world record? I'm curious because I would like to try it myself

Player 1 needs to practice more, even I can get farther than they did.
+John Michaelson Expert players in this game always use Player 2 in a 2 Player Game because the Player 2 score can display more digits before rolling over. Usually they only play on 1 enough to get 1xx points because those digits are used as markers to line up where to shoot in the Challenging Stages.

Only Difficulty B and D will get past the "stage 0 crash" allowing the player to continue as long as possible. All other difficulities this is regarded as the "kill screen"
This score is most definitely beatable, Ill be surprised if it lasts another year or two.
By the way Steve Krogman also has the MAME fast shoot record at 20,518,900 pts - stage 1493. He is the Galaga king, his game play makes the game look easy, I think his record will stand for quite a long time.
ragame66 - I think 20M on fast shots seems quite beatable if your bladder can hold out. I think the game would require 12 to 14 hours of play. I am aware that this same player achieved 15,999,990 on regular (show shots) settings and that is much more impressive.

Awesome game! I had heard a lot about Steve Krogman's mastery of Galaga, but never saw him play until I watched this video. And his arcade games were even better, including an 11M score at Funspot; I think that was in 2002. Great stuff. ☺
Thanks Richard for the kind words. Actually, my 11M was back in 99. :) Hard to believe it's almost 20 years old already, and my world record is almost 30 years old too! May have to change that on the 30th anniversary date. :)
My bro was so good at this game. There was a way to cheat the game on a eat that the enemy won't shoot anymore. Back then you'll go early in the morning and set a record then go back to check if anyone was capable of braking it. That was over thirty years ago...
I used to get to stage 255 at my local arcade, but the game just stopped there.

This is no longer the MAME World Record. This was beaten by Andrew Barrow on April 13th, 2014 with a score of 5,524,600. The replay is available on MARP.
You have to be really good, capitalizing on the challenging stages, because after stage 255, the game locks up on stage 0. So there's a limit to how long you can play.
Paul Reah - The game was played at Difficulty "D" (hardest). At that setting the game can continue past "Stage 0".

I remember playing this game all the time, I am having trouble remembering my max score, but I think it was a steady 345,000 or something like that.

at this one arcade I went to, the high score was so high the numbers were glitched
at 2hrs and 57:01 I thought he got hit by that bug. He just pinpointed that.

I once played a version of this back in the 1980's where you could have 3 or 4 capture recovered ships at the bottom, but I've only seen it once in my life. It was at an arcade in Maplewood, Minnesota, USA. The arcade was called Aladdin's Castle. Anybody know if an emulated version of that exists?
If you're not absolutely sure about the four ship part, Galaga '88 had a three-ship mode.
You may be thinking about Gaplus, which was also sometimes called Galaga 2. Both of which are on MAME.
When does the game stop awarding you extra ships?
You don't ever get any extra ships after 1M. Until then it depends on the settngs you are playing on, extra every 60K or 70K.
Does the game continue to get increasingly difficult, or does it ultimately plateau?

actually at stage 24 onwards more ships fly out. however enemy speed caps at 12

It's the same romset as arcade, but it's played on MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) so it is a MAME record but obviously not an arcade record.
The game I played in the 80's had 256 stages and that was it.
If you play game on hardest difficulty (Rank D), then the game doesn't end on stage 256
It was a coin op game so difficulty wasn't a choice.
It is a dip switch setting on the Coin Op game. There are 4 settings. The machine owner can and could change the difficulty using the dip switches behind the coin box. Difficulty Medium (Rank B) and Difficulty Hardest (Rank B) do not end on stage 256. Google for the original arcade manual and you'll see how to change the dip switches on an original Galaga arcade cabinet.
+zhorik Actually, a difficulty setting of either A, B or C will either reset or lock up at stage 256 (aka stage "0"). "D" will allow you to play indefinitely, or at least up to stage 1,493. :)

Original Galaga did not have Rapid Fire. Rapid Fire has only added later and is easier since you don't really need to aim in order clear levels without problems when using Rapid Fire.
zhorik That's not true - Rapid Fire is where you hold the button and don't have to keep "tapping" it. You're talking about Fast shot speed. Huge difference.
Jon Klinkel You're correct that the original Galaga did support enabling "auto-fire" and the Galaga manual refers to the auto-fire option as "Rapid Fire", so I shouldn't have called "Fast Fire" by the name "Rapid Fire" and thanks for the correction. That said, 99% of the time people talk about "Fast" Galaga they are talking about Fast shot speed, which was not part the original Galaga.
