Brexit funder Arron Banks ignored campaign suspension after Jo Cox’s murder

  • Exclusive: As MPs prepare to vote next week on Theresa May's Brexit deal, tonight we expose new details about the referendum campaign itself.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
This programme has seen new evidence that suggests that Arron Banks and his Leave.EU team spent large sums on other groups, much of which appears not to have been properly declared. A battle bus and a private jet for UKIP. An office, computers and pay for senior figures in the pro-Brexit Labour Leave group. Most shocking of all, we reveal his reaction to the murder of MP Jo Cox. Less than 24 hours after the killing, Banks ordered his team to "up the spend" on social media advertising, and they released a press release, issued in the name of Labour Leave, attacking the media for "politicising" her murder.
A warning: this report contains flash photography.

Had the referendum been legally binding the campaigns would have been held accountable by the electoral commission and overspending would have meant the referendum result was void.

The vote was in 2016. Those who claimed it would be binding were making untenable promises - like it or not, parliament represents the will of the people, interpreted and expressed on a daily basis. Its current division and paralysis indicates that the people are similarly divided. Thus, who can say for sure what the majority want in 2019? Maybe Brexit, maybe not.

    1975 EEC Referendum Expenditure
    IN Campaign: £1.5m - or £11m in today’s money
Out Campaign: £133,629, equivalent to £1m today.
2016 EU Referendum Expenditure Remain Campaign: £28,359,066 (Including £9.5million for pro Remain leaflets)
    Leave Campaign: £13,436,241
The Remain Campaign had: Foreign money from Geoger Soros, Goldman Sachs, J P Morgan and others... The majority of grassroot campaigns supporting them... The majority of the Conservative, Labour, Green, Lib Dem, SNP and other parties supporting them... The majority of regional, national and international media supporting them... The majority of celebrities supporting them... The majority of councillors supporting them... The EU establishment supporting them... Foreign Heads of State such as Obama, Merkel, Hollande supporting them... The majority of large corporations and banks supporting them... They had an additional (estimate) £500,000 Government website advertising done for them... They capitalised on the death of Jo Cox, insinuating that Remainers are the 'moral ones'... They lied... Institutionally the ball was in Remains court. They lost the referendum because the majority of voters saw through the lies and wanted sovereignty for their country. Many Leavers had voted to join the EEC in the '70's and felt as though they had been lied to.

The death of Jo Cox was used and abused by the remain campaign. And as BBC newsnight showed in a report last year, getting creative with the accounts during political campaigning is commonplace. Its something all parties do. And the remain campaign did it too.

@@kevinbuckley8458 I never claimed remain did carry on campaigning. But the idea that the whole democratic process should grind to a halt because of Jo Cox's murder was an attempt at politicising her death.
But the remain campaign did indeed get creative with its accounts. Allowing small pro-remain campaign groups access to free office space. As well as coordinating their campaigning and donations - all of which shows they were attempting to get around spending limits.

They had an additional (estimate) £500,000 Government website advertising done for them...
They capitalised on the death of Jo Cox, insunating that Remainers are the 'moral ones'...
    They lied...
Institutionally the ball was in Remains court. They lost the referendum because the majority of voters saw through the lies and wanted sovereignty for their country. Many Leavers had voted to join the EEC in the '70's and felt as though they had been lied to.
