The rage and fury of a Timelord a rare moment for us to see than has been evident for Eleven to this point. It's a major issue for Jodie and Thirteen and when Nicki "Whatsername" said we would see the Thirteenth Doctor really tested in S12 I got very optimistic about it from the promo
@@fleason771 I only watched the premiere for 13, but when I think on it I don't get an edge from it really.
The whole scene from "colonel run-away" to that line is pure genius.
If Moffat didnt know Rivers parents when he created her, he did before the start of season 5. Amy was specifically named for this reason.

I believe from interviews, Moffat stated he knew from the point he went to name his companion that this would be a thing.
I still call BS tbh, nothing before season 6 foreshadowed it. I'd argue that River's interactions with Amy even kinda contradict this.
ULOIRAR Alex Kingston said when she got the part Moffat told her a rough outline of the plan he had in mind, which included who she really was. This was before they even shot her S4 episodes. She said it was both because he needed her to be available for future episodes and so that she knew her character’s back story, as it was vital for her interactions with not just the Doctor, but with Amy and Rory.

The reason why I like these two person reactions is you've got Elliot who represents us 'the experienced viewer' and you've got Megan who reminds us of what we'll never have again, the blind reaction.
This is why I think reaction videos to shows like Doctor Who are so popular, it helps us, who have seen the show before, try to relive and re-experience the show for the first time.
Also I imagine in this scenario it must be very rewarding for Elliot yet very tricky and difficult not to spoil things for Megan.
Anyways that's my deep comment for today 😂.

So how the cot comes into it...
1) The Doctor has a discussion with others about Amy's Child about how it could possibly be part Time Lord.
2) The Doctors cot has his name written on it, but in Gallifreyan (The language of the Time Lords. This is the only language the Tardis won't auto translate for everyone. You have to be part Time Lord to read it.
3) River takes the doctor over to the cot and says "Oh look YOUR cot, haven't seen that in a very long while."
4) When he asks River who she really is, she puts his hand on his cot and says "I am telling you... can't you read?"
5) The Doctor looks at his own name on the cot, realizes that River read it and knew it was his
6) Realizing she can read Gallifreyan and must be part Time Lord, the Doctor realizes who River really is.
Additionally this also explains why River refused to show up to help earlier during the episode as she was on board the station as a baby. Having an adult version of her show up would've created a paradox as there would be 2 copies of her there at the same time. Once the bad guys had escaped and taken the baby with them, leaving the fake flesh avatar in it's place, she was able to show up at the end to reveal who she was.
It's not that she can't turn up as we know that the doctor has done it himself but rather she mustn't turn up, if they prevented baby River from being taken away it would've rewrote both past and future events causing an implosion of time itself.
An interaction can and has occurred in the past with the doctor (I'd say more on this but "spoilers") but the youngest is unable to retain any information on the events that happened.
@@anbuinc7280 Also true but I think of it as a combination of the two. First the issue of whether she should be there or not... we've seen instances of the Tardis refusing to land somewhere where there's a version of yourself already present before, and I can easily see the doctor after this episode giving a comedic speech about "what would happen if there were two Rivers here. etc.
But I can also imagine if they wanted to, finding a way to ignore that and if she was there, having to deal with the issue of how does she help without doing anything to change her own past. She would literally be trying to save herself from events that she's already lived through and are part of her own life. It would be a pain to write her doing stuff and also explaining why everything she chooses to do has no effect. The episode was long enough without having to add more to it.
The reason I pefer to believe my idea about her not showing up to avoid a paradox of there being 2 of her is pretty much my excuse for having to explain why they don't have to go through all the trouble of what would happen if she did show up. And I imagine both the writers and River Song herself if her character was real would also probably say something similar to avoid the headache of figuring it out.
@@AvatarContinuum i get what you are saying but her simply being there or even interacting wouldn't cause a paradox, it's only if she tried changing the outcome would it cause a paradox and we know she can be there lest we forget a certain upcoming episode S6 E13 but we also have had 3 and 5 doctors interact in the past. Strictly speaking it is ill-advised for one to cross their own time stream but it should be noted that it appears that the youngest can interfere with the oldest timeline as it doesn't affect the past however it cannot work the other way round as it would affect the past but as the time streams would be out of sync it makes sense why the younger ones can't retain that information.
So her not being there is simply down to a wise choice of timing, though she could lie and say it is because it could cause a paradox (rule 1) but does it actually apply to a flesh avatar as we did see in the previous episode that the flesh avatar's DNA could not work for the hand print scanner...food for thought.
@@anbuinc7280 Several good points, but meeting yourself isn't just ill advised, it's actually against the Laws of Time. This law was suspended in the past on a few occasions because the (I believe) Gallifreyan high council decided that the threat was so great that it simply had to be in order to stop the threat which lead to the 3 and 5 doctors meeting you mentioned above.
Though around that time though there were a few instances of meeting yourself in which they just stated they had bent the law, not broken it, which is where a lack of information comes into it, let alone how the rule is used since the destruction of the Time-Lord race.
In the end though she still doesn't go there because she's already there as a child, we're mostly just discussing our own reasons why... whether it's to try to limit or avoid a paradox, writers trying to avoid having to write a complex scenario of her only appearing to help without changing anything, or a characters justification of not wanting to confront herself, etc.
Maybe if we had an actors interview, writers documentary, script pages or even a detailed timeline schedule to go on we could go into more detail, sadly we only have what's on screen to give us several all possible but entirely down to the individual choice outcomes to choose from.

@@AvatarContinuum i great discussion indeed, normally I'll keep my analysis within the confines of the story and try my utmost to avoid bringing in the writers or actors into the discussion so it at least maintains the story although that obviously can't be done during discussions that involves plot holes.
You're quite likely right about it being a law and I have no reason to doubt it as such either, perhaps he refers to it as bending the law given the gravity of the situations?...hope that wasn't a bad pun XD.
There is one other clue in the episode that most people miss:
RORY: Doctor Song. It's Rory. Sorry, have we met yet? Time streams. I'm not quite sure where we are.
RIVER: Yes. Yes, we've met. Hello, Rory.
RORY: What's wrong?
RIVER: It's my >> BIRTHDAY This is the day he finds out who I am.
That scene gets to me because in that moment she almost seems like an excited little kid who just wants to share her day with her dad.
Remember that the blue guy sold River the vortex manipulator that he said was taken off the wrist of a handsome time agent? And how in this episode they reveal that blue guy gets his objects that he sells from the headless monks? And how the headless monks get those objects from the people they cut the head off of? you just got the origin story of the face of boe, aka captain Jack Harkness.
Seemingly.
Hahaha, your reaction to River being Melody Pond was certainly way way bigger than when you learned Captain Jack was the Face of Boe, eh, Megan, man that was so lovely to see, and of course love both of you's reaction to the episode as a whole. And so on that note, Happy New Year in advance to you both, you keep ahold of her, Elliot my man, you and Meg were made for each other, it always make me happy seeing you both together
was Captain Jack actually the Face of Boe? Even the Doctor couldn't truly verify that.
@@charleslee8313 Captain Jack IS NOT the Face of Boe. In some commentary Russel T Davies kicked the idea around and a few other DW people ran with it but it has not ever been made canon. It might one day but so far it isn't.

So many good things in this episode: meeting Vastra, Jenny, and Strax; River after the Great Frost Fair; all the fantastic Moffat misdirections; the Amazing Exploding Baby; THE RIVER REVEAL!!!!

At least at one point the Doctor definitely had a child.
After all the first Doctor did travel with his granddaughter Susan.
So unless Susan was adopted......
But since the Doctor hesitated a bit before completely evading the question if he had children I'm quite convinced there once has been a child.
Not to mention the Clone daughter he had during the Tenant years
He has had children, as he told Donna, but they may no longer be alive. They may have been on Gallifrey. It's an artful evasion.
This is one of those Moffat episodes that make you cry for 10 minutes no matter how many times you've seen it.
Now you can go back and watch her first appearance with the 10th Doctor and cry your heart out.

Moffat knew in S4 he wanted the S6 finale like it was.
When he had to name Amy's character when developing S5 he designed the River story very detailed.
The fact that when the TARDIS was placed into the human she said ‘the only water in the forest is the river’ gets constantly overlooked, the bad the seeds placed really early on and it’s a very poignant moment however it doesn’t get mentioned
The jaw drop is the best thing. Freakin fantastic!

Megan's reaction was everything I'd been waiting for. I think, looking at Elliot's reaction, he was anticipating Megan's reaction as much as the rest of us. Thanks for doing these reactions, they are among my favorites.

Moffat introduced River with the full extent of making her Amy and Rory's daughter, and that was the reason he named her Pond, purely to make this reveal later on. Or at least that's the way the story goes, I kind of buy it with how crazy Moffat can be with his great writing.

The Doctor and River are going in reverse. She herself tells us that each time they meet, she knows him more and he knows her less. When they first met he knew everything about her and she knew nothing about him. This is because he first met her when she was a baby. The last time they meet she knew everything about him, and he knew nothing about her. This is when she died in the library.
If however one didn't figure out her secret from this, the episode opens with River coming back to the Stormcage after celebrating..... Her Birthday!

Moffat was fantastic, don't care what anyone says, he was responsible for some of the best episodes, characters and plots in the entire history of the show.
Take him over Chibnall any day of the week.

Yes. This is a great episode with an amazing twist. Properly build-up for a long time and with a great reveal.
It should be noted that Alex Kingston herself often has stated that yes, Moffat knew every part of River's timeline from the start, that he had the whole thing mapped out, just waiting for the exact moment to reveal each part. That's how Alex herself strongly feels, and she herself was often told these major details months before anyone else knew the secrets or before the episode was even written.
TH-cam algorithm recommended this to me and im so glad ive got someone new to watch reactions :D i love that you spend the time to talk about it afterwards. so many reactors just cut it off and say 'see you next episode' i love hearing peoples actual thoughts.
This is one of those episodes that had SO many good reaction parts, it must have been HELL to edit. Well done! 👍
My favorite line is "We're the Thin Fat Gay Married Anglican Marines. Why would we need names as well?" but understandably it's usually edited out as there are SO many better parts.
I will say this. Judging from this reaction Megan will be ready at some point. And she's definitely more ready now. But she's not ready.

I try to remember that the River that Rory goes to see in Stormcage near the beginning of the episode, may not be the same age as River that comes to Demon's Run. In fact, the evidence suggests that the Demon's Run River is much younger than the River that Rory sees in Stormcage.

So I'll recommend reactors as a whole to people here and there, but this is the first time that I'm pointing a friend at a specific episode (she doesn't watch many reactions) because this has got to be my favorite reaction to the River reveal that I've ever seen. Can't wait for next week.
Oh Megan! I felt exactly the same way! 🙀 I had the same questions, too. If Moffat had this all planned from the beginning he's an incredible genius, not just the best DW writer, but about the best television plot arc writer ever! I'd really like to know how much was "master plan" and how much was improvised "why don't we try this?" I don't think he's telling; and if he did, I'm not sure I'd believe him! But what great television.

Something that makes the cot scene even more heartwarming: normally you keep your old baby things in the attic of your house. Where has the Doctor collected the cot from? The *nearest thing he has to a home*, The TARDIS.
Also, the fact that the Doctor is under a Headless Monk cloak and they’re not reacting implies they owed him a favour too and *let* him do it.
All that came to mind when I first saw the truth of River Song was the bit of Sally Field in Mrs. Doubtfire "It was YOU? The whole time? THE WHOLE TIME?!?"
I think people who don't have something similar to Megan's reaction to the River reveal are dead inside.
