  • Louis C.K talks about how watching the new Beatles documentary helped inspire his new comedy speical with the idea of taking bad material and turning it into good material with time and effort working it out infront of crowds. Joe Rogan cringes at the idea of reliving and working on bad bits.
    The Beatles Get Back docuseries is available on Disney Plus and it was directed and produced by Peter Jackson who also did Lord Of The Rings.
    Louis C.K. was born on September 12, 1967 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. He is a writer and producer, known for Louie (2010), American Hustle (2013) , Horace and Pete (2016). His newest movie he wrote, directed and starred in Fourth Of July (2022), available on his website.

    The reason why Louie is so good is because he works damn hard at it. The Beatles are the pinnacle of how hard work can payoff.

It's obviously subjective and everybody has their own opinions but that's how I see it. Some comedians are just naturally hilarious out the gate like Chappelle, others like CK had to do a ton of work to figure out why they killed and why they bombed. In no order my top comedians are CK, Chappelle, O'Neal. McDonald, Carlin. Pryor. And Murphy. I'd like to include more but these guys are just a league above everybody else IMO.

    The Chris Rock comment bothered me. None of these guys, including Rogan's circle of comic friends, would help a struggling comic develop a joke or set of jokes. They would all say, in one way or another, "Screw you. No one helped me. Figure it out or get out of the business". Comics don't help each other in that way unless they're paid to do so. Even then, the comic performing the written material loses respect because they had to rely on someone else's material. The only time it is acceptable to do this is for awards shows. Every host, comic or not, uses writers, and everyone wants Chris Rock or whomever to perform their joke at the Oscars.

    It's just that "Western" audiences inexplicably act like they have never heard a joke after every comedian's sentence. And that is weird by itself. Do those people who go to show tapings have no sense of humour, or friends, or friends with a sense of humour? Comedians have craft which you can respect and enjoy at the show. It's cool. But I can't imagine having reactions like I see on vids if you have original humour daily in your life.

    I think Louis is a good example of why Joes stand up just isn’t that good.
    Louis avoids pen to paper type writing, he forms everything on stage so it’s straight from brain to audience.
    Where Joe writes EVERYTHING. So it comes out too writerish. Like Louis said, it goes from your mind, to your hand, to the pen, then to paper, to your eyes, back to brain, THEN to the audience. Just too many filters, and you can tell when you watch Joe’s comedy. It’s just so rehearsed and whittled down.

    Comedians always say that rule number 1 of comedy is to not play to the back of the room. I'm not a professional but I disagree with that. The real first rule, as Gilbert Gottfried taught me, is to not be afraid to bomb. Which is why he likely did the best telling of a joke in human history. It's too bad that we only have snippets of video and audio of it. If you're curious as to the joke just look up the documentary The Aristocrats.

    It's interesting that he says not everybody understands English in the European crowds. I mean why would you go the Louis CK show if you didn't understand what he's talking about?

    • @tipsofsmyth
      @tipsofsmyth ปีที่แล้ว +3

      lol. I guess he doesn't mean they have no clue what he is saying, but some subtleties. Also sometimes, you understand the word, but not the joke, because cultural issues. These can happen a little, yet overall still enjoy the show, still wanna get the ticket

    • @bennetcatchpole
      @bennetcatchpole ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s bc jokes rely really heavily on tonal expression and timing. And all comedy comes from a place of either irony or hyperbole (the contrasting of events or opinions against societal norms - or the exaggeration of events or opinions in contrast to societal norms). And irony and hyperbole are really hard to catch if English isn’t your first language because your conscious brain wants to translate the words literally. So the European crowds are probably a bit weird because some of the crowd are gonna have punchlines go over their heads or maybe miss some of the subtleties in the punchlines and it would throw off his rhythm for applause breaks and shit like that. I think that’s probably what he meant.

    • @cserpakbalazs6342
      @cserpakbalazs6342 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bennetcatchpole Yep, you are probably right. However I as a Hungarian would like to go to one is shows exactly because I watched all of his videos and (I think) I understand those subtleties that you're talking about. Maybe those shared Hungarian genes help a bit :). The point is, I wouldn't want to see him live if I didn't find him a genius based on his videos. Anyway, you get my point. Thanks for your answer.

    It sounds honorable, but what about the crowd. 20 minutes of great material and then just not using it because people would enjoy it too much? Imagine making a great meal and choosing to stop serving it because it's too good.

    Writing isn't easy, pros like Louie CK, work hard to pull jokes out of thin air, they pull and pull, constanting jerking jokes until it all comes together. He could even be in his apartment with guests over, when the urge strikes the man will just go to town writing comedy, pulling and pulling for the love of the game. Legend!
