  • Fire up the waxy lance! The HubNut Skoda is getting some love.
    Yes, I'm so smitten with the Favorit (not Forman in the UK) that I decided it needed some serious rust protection. I went to Krown Rust Protection in Tipton, West Midlands (krown.co.uk/uk). I paid for the treatment - this is not a freebie.
    This video takes you through the process. I look forward to reporting on its effectiveness in the coming months.

    For a 23/24 year old car, it's amazing how rust free the Skoda is. It must have been quite well protected when it was imported, not sure if it would have been in the factory in Czechoslovakia (apologies if the spelling is incorrect). Robert at Krown Rust Protection was very thorough. The cost seemed reasonable too. Let's hope it proves successful.

    Great video again Ian. Definitely a good idea for such a clean old car, no matter what it is. It was cool for them to let you video the process as a really great advert for them, plus it was really nice of them to give you the discount, it shows they are a respectful and caring company. As others have said, elle would definitely benefit from it too so you may not have to replace her body parts again, or at least not as quickly as you might have to.

    As I commented on a previous video, I always admired the Favorit, the styling, is so dated now, so square, it's cool, especially so in estate guise! Seeing yours having just been washed, looking all shiny and almost new, it was like a flashback to a time in the mid 1990's when they were everywhere around these parts o the UK.
    I own a 73 VW T2 'bay window' camper which I bought cheap when they were still properly cheap in 1998, so that's coming up on 21 years now. I had to do a lot of welding and letting in of new panels (3 months solid worth) when I got it and spent days squirting Waxoyle everywhere I could get it when I was done. Was a bugger of a job in the colder months trying to get it thin enough to flow and spray and I never really liked the lingering smell. Anyway, 50,000 miles later and although it's been off the road a few years now, the underneath is still as rot free as when I first finished working on it and it never failed another MoT due to corrosion so I must've done something right. I'm sure if Krown had been going then I would've jumped at the chance to have had someone do the job professionally.
    As an aside, I wonder if anyone remembers the monthly (I think) publication called 'Jalopy', published some-when back in the late 80's, early 90's? I'm sure I've still got a few copies somewhere. The content and some of the 'bangernomics' philosophies of your channel remind me more than a little of that magazine.

    I belive that original tyres was Barum OR34 . To wax inside of sills, there are premade holes covered with rubber plugs. They are located after you open door on top side of the sill. So there is no need to drill inside them.

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As stated by other commenters, in the United States, for years we had the older rustproofing technology by Rusty Jones and Zeibart. Neither had much success as it was more of a thick black tar that was actually counter productive. Water would eventually get underneath it and the tar would hold the moisture in, making it rott faster. Then about several years ago, Krown started making it's way into the Northern United States and its the most popular and effective rust proofing treatment now. The only thing I don't like, as stated by Hubnut himself, is seeing them drill holes in my precious car. I know it's necessary but it makes me cringe just thinking about it. Also wished it lasted longer too. Here Krown tells you to have it respray each and every year. Up selling the crap out of it. Lol. Great video.

    • @raspucin70
      @raspucin70 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I came to same conclusion in my research. All those "Bedliner-type" rubbery sprays do exactly that - they trap water underneath and make things worse. You can get DIY kit from Amazon (~ $150 US) and do it yourself. Gallon of Fluid Film is more than plenty for the whole car, inside and out. I ended up doing two cars with one gallon, with little bit left, so the kit pay itself off with just one application. It does require a stronger air compressor (2 HP or so) to supply enough air.

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@raspucin70 yes, well said. I did not mention fluid film as a DIYer alternative just because I don't have a sprayer or high enough powered compressor to do the job correctly. I also don't have a lift to get the car high enough to work underneath. But yes, fluid film is a great product and probably a cheaper cost alternative to Krown.

    • @raspucin70
      @raspucin70 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@klwthe3rd I dont have lift either, I just used 4 jack stands. I *did * buy a large car jack from HF (3 ton, $100 or so), than applied jack stands. Not the same as lift, but plenty of room to work underneath (I did "arms-reach" one side at the time so that I didnt had to risk crawling fully underneath the car). The kit comes with a sprayer, two "wand" nozzles, two bottles, gallon of fluid film and a spray can for fiddly stuff like door/trunk seems etc. Excellent value in my opinion. To me it was a no-brainer to spend two days doing my cars on my own instead of driving 400 miles round trip and pay ~200/per car. And its not difficult at all, just messy. Vauxhall (GM in the UK) concerned about their rapidly growing reputation for rusting cars in the 50s/60s, were one of the first companies in the UK to underseal their cars in the factory, this consisted of what you mentioned- rubbery tar based spray- but moisture and salt took no prisoners and after a couple of harsh winters the coating would bloat and trap - making things even worse - especially for the welder trying to patch things up..

      My brother had a Vauxhall Viva HA van for a while back in the early 70s, a 6 year old telephones van - the whole thing rusted to bits within 18 months. My first car, an 8 year old Viva HB 1600 ohc, also disintegrated badly on the wings and under the wheel arches. That black tarry undersealing didn't do much to stop it. I was forever filling in holes with fine chickenwire and filler!

    I've had a thought about the hot running temperature (as indicated on the temp gauge).
    One of my fathers' cars did the same from new - running almost at the red line although it never over heated (then). Several years on and it did start boiling over. A replacement like-for-like radiator cured that AND lowered the indicated temperature to middle of the gauge range. I wondered if some of the tubes in the original radiator were somewhat obstructed by weld spatter (or whatever) when it was assembled. Certainly the water flow through the replacement appeared much superior.

    The red paint pigments were always the least stable with UV and always tended to oxidise badly if not washed and waxed regularly. That said, the oxide layer is very robust and stable and so protects the underlying layers well. I once bought a mk1 golf that was entirely pink at purchase but after a weekend t-cutting it came up like a new penny! The wax looks like money well spent.

    You used to be able to buy a T40 aerosol. This was a foaming type product that was easy to get a good coverage.
    This is the first product I've seen that actually gets under the scabs of rust. After a month or so the rust scabs fall off and you are left with rust that looks like surface rust.
    It's a pity they do not sell the aerosols any more as very rusted parts really need a number of applications before the rust dissappears.

    Here in the US we did have 2 well known rust proofers. Zebart and Rusty Jones, I think they are long gone. Now days most new car body's are dipped at the factory now to stop rusting. Some new car dealers still try to sell it, but most all people never buy.

I hope that whoever wrote that comment is watching this video and how pretty much rust free this 94 car is. Some much more newer cars should be jealous of the Favourite 😁😁

      @@HubNut I am sorry for the nagging but it'd be a shame to get the placement wrong when it'll be looking great after a polish!
      Favorits luckily aren't *that* bad in the whole scheme of things when it comes to rust, especially the later ones like yours - it's mainly rear wheel arches (did they take off the black plastic covers to rustproof behind there?) and front wings along the top edge strangely. Considering how 'budget' they were, it could be far worse! Interesting to see the Krown procedure, it's something I've considered getting done on my 360 GLT and they're pretty local...! :)

      Told it's not very good on the ol' environment (or lungs) either. Treat yourself to a respiratory mask when you use that stuff. I shutter to think how many people have lathered that on their cars (and people who have worked in body shops using it) who have been inhaling it for years!

    As far as restoring the paint, first clay it. I've restored 9 cars so far and these old non-clearcoat cars can be polished back to a shine. Red is the worst. I had an Audi Coupe Quattro in red and the paint oxidized in the same way - it had to be polished regularly. When clay bars came out, it made the whole thing significantly easier and gave great results.
