When I passed my driving test in 1978 my first car was a 1970 Mk1 Ford Escort whilst friends owned similar......... Escorts, Marinas, Vivas and Minis and the like around the same age. These cars used to rot away at an alarming rate and once they had 60 - 70,000 miles on the clock they were generally worn out despite regular care & servicing. It certainly puts things into perspective and shows how much things progressed since when you look at a new car registered 30 years later than those we drove. In this case, a 20 year old (modern) car with 180,000 miles on the clock is still going strong and has very minimal corrosion. Durability certainly improved with modern cars. Lots of life left in Bella yet.

I couldn't agree more. Modern cars can be amazingly long lived compared to the rubbish we coveted in the 70's and 80's. In 2011 we bought a 2005 206 1.4hdi. It had covered 150k, was a bit scruffy, but ran as sweet as a nut. We sold it in 2015 with 235k on the clock, it had never broken down, never had a clutch, just servicing and a timing belt. It was averaging 62mpg, and was pressed into service as a delivery vehicle by a cake shop, who ran it for a further two years! Brilliant, no MK1 Escort, Marina, Viva or Avenger could do that.

    • @chrisfrob
      @chrisfrob ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@660einzylinder Yes, you're right......none of the old cars came anywhere near to what we now take for granted today in terms of durability. I bought and ran various old 70's stuff for around 8 years after I passed my test then had company cars for the next 35 years. They were all provided new and fully serviced by the company so I didn't really connect with cost of ownership until I retired and decided to buy a small second hand car in 2019. I bought a 2011 Citroen C3 Exclusive with 30,000 genuine miles on the clock. I don't drive many miles and still have the car today. It's nearly eleven years old now and looks outside and inside like it's just been driven out of the showroom. I'd expect at least another 10 years of almost trouble free motoring from this car. Back then......it would have been well overdue for the scrapyard.

I too had a 1973 Mk1 Escort at 16 in '86 to do up for when I passed my test, inner wings had already been welded but were rotten again, sills weren't the best either, it was shot to be fair and I gave up in the end. I run an 11 year old Panda with 105k on nowadays and even though its a cheaply made car its still sweet as a nut, flies through its MOT every time.

I'm sure Tim knows what he's doing and maybe I missed something, but in my not inconsiderable experience of fighting rust on bangers, I've found if you simply wire brush rust back and apply underseal, the rust will be back in a year or two. What works for me is wire brushing, a good rust killer product, primer (ideally zinc), cheap black top coat paint, and then the underseal.

Another fine job by Cambrian Classics, including a good choice of jacking points.
I've also found lesser garages jack up PSA cars in the wrong place, leading to eventual corrosion. Although to be fair, they still last longer than some other well known brands (blue oval etc).
It's not got to the point where, when I'm having tyres changed, I take the wheels off the car myself and take them to the tyre company, so they don't have the opportunity to jack my car up incorrectly.

The PSA diesels are really tough units and just keep on going. Mine has 2 year interval oil changes by it's previous owners which was usually always 10-15k miles intervals. I prefer shorter intervals but I've already done 6k since I did it in April so I'll change it soon or at 7.5k. Doesn't cost much to service yourself so I think it's worth doing it sooner.

Interesting, but as a mechanic of 50 years plus I was surprised that he didn't start to loosen the track rod out of the track rod end in situ, before removing the track rod end nut and taper. If you leave it in it's far easier to start to unscrew the track rod if it's tight as the joint is held solid, rather than taking the taper out and then trying to hold it with a ring spanner. I usually use a 14" pair of stillsons on the lock nut on the track rod if it's tight, to at least move it initially, then remove the taper to screw the joint off the track rod once you've freed it off.

Unfortunately, I have first hand experience of dodgy servicing. About 15 years ago, my grandmother's VW Polo (a 5-door 1.9D CL, no less) stopped running one day. It turned out that none of the filters had been changed since the car was new - some of the parts still had the 1998 date stamps on them. The actual cause in this case was a blocked fuel filter, but all of them were very nasty. It had full VW main dealer service history, both from the original supplying main dealer in Heathrow, and the main dealer she bought it from in Tamworth.
Nevertheless, just because it has a full service history, even a main dealer service history, and had been stamped by the main dealer in the service record, don't assume it's been serviced properly. In fact, assume nothing has been done to it at all. I think they just charged £300 a pop for a service sticker in the windscreen, because the oil was some of the worst I've seen too! Finally, because my grandmother insisted on taking it to a garage for a service (she had to have the stamps in the book), she ended up taking it to the Proton (later Citroen) dealer around the corner. They looked after her very well.

A mate has just bought a 2006 Berlingo Multispace to convert into a mini camper. One owner from new, with 68k and full history. Drives beautifully.

I've got a 2002 berlingo multispace, both rear suspension mounts corroded but not excessive, you should get ACF50 anti corrosion spray, developed by the American military it's about 14£ for an aerosol it works far better than penetrating oil.

M49s are great. My 2002 had no rust at all right up till I sold it 3 months ago. Tyre wear was always a problem though. Always on the outside edges on the front, and inside edges on the rear! Forever needing tracking. Strangely my B9 front tyres are wearing on the outsides as well! And I've tried several different places to have tracking done.

I tend to go for 3 to 5k on my services, 10k would scare me silly. 😯 My Corsa had been changed every 10 by the previous owner and it gave up the ghost at 100k, and had to have a new turbo at 80. On further inspection all the PCV stuff and EGR were totally ruined.

Oil change intervals are, in my view, far too large. Engine oil is expensive but regular oil and filter changes set against the cost of engine repairs make it essential to carry out this mini service out at more sensible distances.

Not bad at all - my own "French van with seats in it" is rotten in the front inner wings and the sills. The floor's not actually too bad though. The worst bits appear to be where the rubberised coatings have failed on joints and in corners, trapping water behind it causing the galvanising to dissolve. I once burst a big bubble on the outer sill and the water that came out was a bright blue colour.
I'm currently considering fitting a new front cross-member and subframe (almost £700), but that means getting the old ones out, and they're known for rusted-in bolts which then snap. Hours of fun ahead!

I wonder what differences there were between the under body sealing on the Citroen Berlingo and the Peugeot Partner? I am curious because a family member owns a 51 plate Partner, which like your Berlingo has lived it's life by the sea, and the one thing I am astounded at is the fact the underside body work is totally rust free. I had it up on a lift earlier this year and was surprised at how good the actual body work was. Just about everything else underneath was rusty - very in some cases, but not the body work. And there was no sign of any aftermarket underseal, just the stuff she left the factory with. Thus I am wondering if Peugeot put a bit more effort into sealing the underside than Citrroen did? Not that Bella is bad for her age, have seen much newer cars with much more rust than that! But good to see your drop links came off without a fight, I had to change them on the Partner a couple of years back - they only left the vehicle after some persuading with my angle grinder.

My Peugeot Expert was wearing front tyres out after 10 or 12,000 miles. The nearside was much worse though, and I have an idea it might have been down to the 3mm thick wedge of rust on one side at the top of the strut, pushing it out of alignment. Currently it's all in bits waiting for me to finish cleaning and painting it (and finish the welding).
