In Hawaii we call that Akule ( big eye scad). Great for frying or great for drying in a dry box. One of the best eating fisheshere in Hawaii
Very interesting! Thanks for watching
Fantastic fishing!! Great to see that you are dispatching them as you go!! Well done to you!! From New Zealand.
A favourite fish in Asia, cooked in so many ways depending on which cuisine - grilled, fried, sashimi/sushi and you can stuff pureed peppers /cilantro in the stomach cavity or in between cuts on body for extra ‘punch’ of flavours!
Simple way to cook without wasting so much meat, and let it flavour in it’s own oils (it’s one of the oiliest fish) is to remove the gills & guts, score two/three cuts across the body (top fin to belly), leave head & skin on, pat dry, season with salt & pepper - fry it up.
You can eat it with or without the skin (crispy skin tastes great), dip fish meat in soy or chilli sauce. The meat above the head is tender, and if the head has been fried crispy enuf, it’s good to just crunch on the bony bits 😊
I am aghast tt it’s used as bait (especially those larger than 20cm) - it costs £12 to £13 per kilo here at the supermarket!! 😭😊
Your faces when you took the first bite priceless lol x
It was a surprise how good that was haha
It was a Kodak moment when they took a bite of that sandwich surprise pictures I agree with you 100% my friend
What’s the name of the spice please
Put green onion thinly sliced with sashimi HM and lemon. Rice on the side is the only way land locked Indiana gets this fish. Typically we only see them in early spring and a early to late fall. I think we get them in season with Japans timing. The other option is sashimi HM ( smacked in lemon juice and or vintages ) then put them in a bowl and add very thin red onion or shallots into a few dollops of sour cream. If you have a Japanese Mayo you can add like a table spoon max to the sour cream. For all add salt, pepper, chili oil and garlic as you like. The onions and acid are not optional. The sour cream one will last a week or more in the fridge due to the acid applied direct to the flesh. Enjoy !
Hello, here we love horse mackerel, small ones fried, the bigger ones are great grilled on fire, the whole one with guts and everything, to not get very dry, when they are full of small shrimp they taste great, in Nazaré (land of Giant waves) fisherman dry the horse mackerel on sun for some days in the beach on nets and then eat it boiled.
In Portugal the small ones fried are called "jaquinzinhos" and its a very tradicional dish with tomatoe rice its delicious even tourists loves it.
Happy fishing for all 😃
Great to see Sam out for a session and a catch and cook!!
Smash I hope you start getting more and more people watching from Colorado. I’m gonna keep sharing, my friends like your vids.

There is nothing better than making memories with your best friend especially when fishing 🎣🎣 😉🎣 and catching fish 🐟🐟🐟 and to find out your bait fish that your catching tastes better than the prize fish you catch haha . I bet from now on you will be bringing that fish home for supper 😜🙂 and cook some for your father and see what he says
That was really cool. That sure looked like the Smelt I catch out of Lake Michigan, but it's hard to tell.Love to watch you and Sam catch loads of fish. It's really nice of you give us a still for a snapshot.
The best fishing show on television by a street.
Thanks
Really glad that you enjoyed the horse mackerel, I really like them, I just grill mine whole. Another great video, thanks for sharing it with us.

🤣🤣 Horse Mackerel is as popular as sardines back home (Portugal) but please please that fish preped whole salt and straight on the bbq... Do it, you'll love it
Il give it a go
Always a good content , great job what a pleasure. Horse mackerel are really good to make some sushy, yummy , to be honnest it's perfect, just freeze the chair some minutes and put one the rice, with soja sauce. Bon appétit et merci à vous les gars .
Where you are looks just like née zealand! We used to fish for bream but found the mackerel are great to eat and smoke well too. Enjoy.
Good video guys These fishes are called jureles in Spain are like mackerels a little softer flavour bit very good. We eat them fried.
I have eaten them in Bulgaria and when I told them that in England they are only used as bait in the pots they thought we were crazy. Great video guys!
Cracking vid boys. 100 fish from the lighthouse is bloody good going! 🎣 🔥 Nice to see some squid caught too. We had cuttlefish off the boat this week too. The Portuguese like horse mackerel, not as popular with the locals. Nice work 👍
Thanks for watching mate using the old technique for scad with the mullet gear and chum , never fails lol nice to see some squid tho 🎣 looking forward to see the video with cuttles mate there great eating and bait !
Great Video! Here in Spain it's quite common to eat horse mackerel (called Jurel in Spanish). They're often at the fish counter in the grocery store and on menus in fish restaurants. Like you said, it's a lot like bream. Great for ceviche too!
Smash I’m really enjoying these premieres. What a great way for you to engage your audience and get live feed back. Jess says with the new bundle of joy coming you need to name the boat “Smash Daddy”😂😂😂😂👍🇨🇦
Haha the boat it called smash haha
I love it when you discover something new ! Everything old is new again
A previous trash / bait fish turns out to be a new fave.....Sam " I want another one!! "
Live and learn,, you can Sautee and pack in tacos,,, it reminds me of baby tilapia,,, awesome your finally eating,,, great to see🎩☝️🤚🦜🕷
my dad loves horse mackerel, his favorite way is freshly caught fried in butter(sometimes he will use drippings) and garlic. not overly healthy but delicious.
That cook up is making me hungry here in Canada. Glad to see it made it to you and agrees with you. Cheers, 👍
lovely fish to eat, love night fishing for scad. Get some decent sized ones round here, great ray bait too 👍
niceone guys great couple of squid and the
scad looked real tasty
Excellent 👌 footage was brilliant thanks for the show Smash and Sam .
Mackerel is my favorite Sashimi when I got for sushi, obviously the ones your guys caught were not the same but I imagine that was a great meal
hey smash love the vids try to marinate in garlic, pepper and salt then dust them in corn meal and deep fried them whole, (without the guts) serve with cooked potatoes in salted water and make a simple salsa verde with parsley (minced) onion (minced) olive oil salt pepper and a drizzle of lemon juice the real man will eat the crispy head of one of those fishes ;) hope you enjoy and man up for the task ;)
Just watched the end, BINGO! Like bream but a bit more savoury and yummy. Love it, get em down ya ✌️
Another smashing video guys well done, I googled the batter you used as it looks good:- "Canada's first choice in fish seasoning, Fish Crisp is a lightly seasoned coating designed to form a bond with the fish to resist oil absorption and create a firm fried texture" It's not cheap either about £13 a bag
Wow ! Thanks for the information 👍
Grew up catching these is Hawaii-called them Akule there. Delicious fish and fun catching them with lighted bobbers. Always big numbers.
Love this channel and y’all’s personalities!
It's not a smash fishing vid without sweet chili sauce! Thanks for the Content guys 👍
In portugal we eat them a lot!! search for portuguese horse mackerel recipes and try one!

Great session mate very entertaining. Sam and yourself make the perfect team. The horse mackerel look very meaty. Think they would go well deep fried in batter then dip in sweet chilli dip.

Por them on the fry pan with pouder salt pepar end same Lemon and they get hummy
Craig Rivers, Rivers End Outdoors, Good international video!
At 3:34 he has that sinner laugh as he said FISH ON. It reminds me of Sydney Greenstreet in the movie classic THE MALTESE FALCON including actors Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorie. The most classic line of that movie was made by Sidney Greenstreet when he said: "COME NOW MY DEAR GOOD MAN, PLEASE DON'T MISTAKE MY BENEVOLENCE FOR SHEER STUPIDITY, SUCH PHILANTHROPY WON'T BE TOLERATED."
Have any of you noticed that Sam is doing a lot of talking in this video?
Great! ...and it`s no thrash fish at all, they made great cans of horse mackerell in Spain for years...;) Change your taste a little bit...;)
In Japan horse mackerel are called Aji. In restaurants they are in tanks and they pull them out live and fillet for sashimi (raw, thinly sliced). We then fry the bones so they are very crispy. Great with a cold beer. We grill them too.
Brilliant outing bro everyday is a learning day I knew a old lady that absolutely loved scad
Sam always looks unsure 😂😂😂😂😂awesome vid lads 💎💎💎

Well Jay another great video did not know you got horse mackerel don’t think I have even seen them till I watched ‘this glad you got a lot of bait saves on buying it till the next one take care
Thanks Liz
This is fun! Good job guys!
Great cook up, heavy on the chilli sauce
Mackerel, marinated in olive oil, chilli, rosemary. gutted, sides slashed, shove a stick/skewer in the mouth and roast on an open fire, or bbq. Not just hot embers, you need a bit of flame action, usually the oil dripping will give you that. roast a lemon and squeeze over just before eating. one of the best dishes ever. Try it... But please no telling me your moist and want to marry me. already made that mistake once with my wife.
🤣🤣
Japanese eat aji (horse mackerel) a lot. They are excellent salted, butterflied, and grilled. Typically they are served this way for breakfast with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and pickles.
Sounds good
Here’s a video on aji prep:

Great video! Thank you.
Horse mackarel are really good eaten breaded fried and sushi. Just have to de-bone them with tweezers. Very popular in Japan Delicious as well. Japanese call them Aji
Love the comment “we’re onto something there m8 “ 🤣🤣🤣 great vid Jay 👍
No horse mackerel is safe anymore 😂
My absolute favorite sashimi! Aji !
Awesome session
What...we use "Cozy Kitten" cat food for chum and clean the shells at the dinner table. We would eat the shells if we could chew 'em.
Never eaten the squid or the fish but I can imagine how it tastes by watching you hell yeah
I use horse mackerel for deadbait on pikefishing in the autumn / winter period.
never thought about eating it. if they are like normal mackerel, they should be good smoked or grilled on the bbq as well then?
Looks like a sand smelt to me. Great fishing lads loads of fun.
Thanks dude
I love eat scad he have a bit more bones but it is delicious he have mix taste sardin and mackerel he is mixed between jack and mackerel in India it lots 👌😊😊
Never knew you could catch big squid like those over here
Yes , they get a lot bigger then the ones we caught
if im not wrong, here in the Philippines we called it GALUNGGONG and its quite expensive almost 4USD for 1kilogram
the Minumum wage here at some major cities is only 12USD for 8hours of work so you'll get the idea
im always watching you :) hoping one day i can experience foraging or maybe fishing on a boat . im currently working as a security guard earning 10dollars for 12hours of work watching you is my stress reliever keep those videos coming ! HAHA maybe one day i can finally taste lobster . GodBless
Good luck man.

Heck of a night Guys, y’all killed them!🤙
Thanks Grady
Here in the Philippines we call Big Eyed Scad as "Matambaka or Matangbaka" which translates to "Cow eyes or oxed eye". I personally love it because it's super cheap and neutral tasting.
hye im from Malaysia. already subscribed your channel about 2 years already.. that fish you caught is yellowtail scad.. in Malaysia we call ikan selar kuning.. is good when you fried it up..
Lovely catch and cook mate! was a very interesting cook up 👌
Thanks mate it was something new , we will try a few other species to haha
They taste really good mate nice when fry
Smash Fishing Baby
im using it into salad cucumber tomatoes and lettuce mayo and lemon
That looks really tasty lads. If you haven't tried it before a 50/50 mix of flour and curry powder( or Cajun spice) is really good with mackerel and probably scad too. Time for me to buy some squid jigs!😁
Sounds great mate thanks for watching
I like them fried.... Hi from Camogli, Italy
the mackerel is good if you fry them whole with salt and pepper
Takes all sorts ! I tried them,once, ha,ha !!
As always im starving now lol. We dont get horse mackerel unless we go out on the boat . never off the pier .
In Western Australia they are Yellowtail
(Yellowtail scad, yellowtail horse mackerel)
Trachurus novaezelandiae mainly used for live bait because there are so many small bones most dont eat them as they are a pain to clean
Hi Smash, looked on Amazon etc for the Fish Crisp crumb, were does it come from??? who makes it???? Tight lines Mark
I remember a night where a massive load of horse macrel came in we must have got full strings for like 2 hours !
