    All excellent points. When you're new to riding, you don't know what you don't know, so I made a few equipment errors, but I asked other riders for advice. A co-worker and long time Harley rider said to get a good rain suit. I later got caught out in a rain storm of seemingly biblical magnitude and was so glad I had a decent rain suit.
    First helmet was off the shelf that seemed to fit. After a while it sucked. Current helmet was professionally fitted and is perfect, but costs almost $500, but 100% worth it, especially on long rides. All good advice CycleCruza. I wish everybody a safe ride out there.

    Here is what the video recommends:
    1) Get a dual sports bike
    2) Get good gear even though they are expensive,
    3) Get roadside assistance.

    Best Nooby bike tip ever: Get Good Gear. There is NO better recommendation. Gear is everything!

  • @kingsqueak2221
    @kingsqueak2221 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Buy your gear first...excellent advice. Too easy not to realize how much decent gear is, buy a bike and not have the money left for the gear.
    AAA - been a customer for years, they are the best though a bit more expensive. I've tried coverage that comes with new cars or via insurance policies, their tow mile limits are very low and they take forever to show up. AAA gets there in a reasonable time and they are a very customer oriented company too.

    Good points. I agree. I think if you have no prior motorcycle experience a dual sport is definitely safer and easier to learn on. Even if you have prior experience a small dual sport is just awesome to have. There are days when I would like to jump on a sport bike and go for a blast but now, after having my CRF 250 I wouldn't want to be without it. It's just too much fun. The other day I was thinking about all the bikes I had in the past. I missed so many days of riding because it looked like it was going to rain. Then it didn't..... With my dual sport I ride anyway. It's a dirt bike. If you get it dirty you don't have to spend a week cleaning it. If I decide I want a sport bike or another cruiser, I'll definitely keep my dual sport. I don't know how I lived so long without one.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jerry Coon I feel the same way. Actually, I think I would sell my cbr1000rr before I'd sell my wr250r. I like having both but I love the ability to ride both on and off-road. These bikes can take a beating and you don't have to keep them pretty like a sportbike.

    • @jerrycoon4504
      @jerrycoon4504 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CycleCruza Yeah exactly! They are just easy to ride and they aren't big and bulky and cumbersome. I would like to have a big bike again though. Just a nice weather bike. Wait til you get the mods on that WR... you will be just as excited as you were when you first got the bike. I think I'm almost as excited waiting for the video! haha. It will be really awesome for you to find a place where you can ride off road in the woods or trails or a gravel pit or something. Eventually if you're riding offroad you will drop it. That's how you learn though. You try things that you're not positive you can do. Sometimes you surprise yourself and nail it and other times you don't make it the first time but you learn.... I think I had my CRF about a week and I dropped it in a muddy rut. Just brush the dirt off, straighten the mirrors out and get going again! LOL

    +CycleCruza Gear is by far the most important thing for a rider, 3 years ago i also found out the hard way..... When coming back from school on my 49cc dualsport (max cc's allowed at age 16) i got hit by a car, my bike was completely wrecked and i broke my knee and bruised my lungs. after that i was taken to the hospital by ambulance and straight to intensive care because my lungs where shutting down for unknown reason. but after a few weeks it started getting better and it wasnt life threatning anymore. now nearly 3 years later my lungs are good again but my knee still hasnt fully recovered even after multiple surgery's and over 2 years of hard training.
    The lesson ive learned:
    Just a helmet, gloves and jacket isn't enough. wear good protective pants too!
    i did have a real good quality helmet that my dad gave me, it took a hard hit too, the screen ripped apart and the mehanism for it shatterd also all around it had multiple marks, but my head was perfectly fine (exept for being low on oxygen due to my lungs) also my jacket was perfectly fine, it was a good quality jacket, i still have it now and wear it occasionally.
    My normal jeans where completely shredded and my shoes got a beating too but luckily i was wearing my workboots that day, and not my sneakers.
    SO DONT SAVE ON GEAR.

    • @jon123marshall
      @jon123marshall 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sucks and I hope your knee gets well but I'm wondering, how did you get a bike and legally drive it at 16?

    • @Bingus701
      @Bingus701 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jon123marshall in texas you can get a motorcycle endorsment at age 15 but you will be limited to only 250cc until you are 16 then you can get any bike.

    • @DutchMastermind
      @DutchMastermind 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jon123marshall Thanks man, i live in europe, here you can get a license to ride a bike with 49cc max. And your full license at 18 years, but that has been changed now at 18 you can have 125cc max and at 20 endless cc but only 35kw and at 22 (or 24 if u dont have the previous license) you can ride any bike.

    • @DutchMastermind

      1AmericanInAsia No, you can get your car licens when you are 17 and then u need to drive with someone that has the license already or you can just wait untill you are 18 and drive on your own. (no power limit, only not all ensurances will insure you car if you have high HP and low age)

    ok, so it was time for me to renew my AAA coverage anyways and after seeing this video, i decided to look into this RV coverage. actually, AAA has a specific add on just for motorcycles that you can add to your existing coverage. so thanks to this video, i went on and renewed for another year and added the motorcycle coverage for $35 more. also, as a AAA member, any purchases you make on motorcycle superstore will get you AAA points. points that convert to $$$ you can use to reduce your AAA cost at next renewal. thanks CC.

    Welp I'm doing good on your 3 things >.< Started on my current KLR 650, my Rev'iT pants/jacket combo comes in the mail tomorrow(been riding 4 months though with no leg protection, and cheap jacket), only been riding for 4 months so don't need to replace my helmet anytime soon and it fits perfect. I saved up for like a whole year to buy my motorcycle + all my gear, and I'm satisfied as hell, I don't need road assistance though. My step-dad and grandfather both have trucks worthy of putting my bike in the back. Loved the video though :D Took my EBATE class and loved it, learned a lot. Keep up the great videos.

    CC, why would you replace your helmet every five years unless you head size changes. Also, another thing you could do if you start over is install self-canceling turn signals :-)

    • @paulyC
      @paulyC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe helmets 'wear out' after 5 years.

    • @UhuruFrontier
      @UhuruFrontier 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Banana Split I disagree with this because their are too many variables in play that will degrade the helmets lifespan. There are only a few real, measurable reasons to replace a helmet: 1. The helmet was involved in an accident where it was damaged; 2. The owner grew out of the helmet; 3. The owner wants a new helmet due to technology changes or the owner no longer has a need for the helmet for what it was intended. That is pretty much it. Reasons for normal wear and tear on a helmet is so vast that it can not be considered a true measurement for helmet replacement.

    • @paulyC
      @paulyC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +1AmericanInAsia valid points. I don't ride, but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

    • @tiehut
      @tiehut 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +1AmericanInAsia the styrofoam padding expires

    • @UhuruFrontier
      @UhuruFrontier 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +tiehut Come on guys. Styrofoam has a life span of over 5,000 years if it sits in a land field. I really doubt it will degrade enough in 5 years while it sits on a shelf in a garage or closet in a home under great air conditioner that it warrants replacing a $500 helmet.
      The reason helmet manufactures say replace the helmet in 5 years is because they want you to buy a helmet every 5 years. They will stop making replacement parts for the helmet to force you to buy a new one. Again, the materials will not degrade to the point of it being not usable after 5 years if a person rides his bike 2 times a week from Apr - Nov (no riding in the winter). Replace it after 5 years of normal use is just not correct because normal use may be different for each person. If you crash a helmet, you should replace it. That is a must. Like I said, there are just too many variables to put a non-use policy on a helmet after just five years of use. The engine of the motorcycle has more ware and tear than a helmet could possibly have. Are you going to replace your engine after 5 years of use? Hell no.
      I have 237,000 miles on my 2006 car and have never had to open the engine. I have taken great care of the car and have changed parts at required intervals. Car dealers hate people like me; someone that follows the maintenance plan and change parts that are not on the general plan. The same goes for a helmet. Take care of it, wash it correctly to keep it clean to reduce the chance of bacterial growth in the helmet. Change the interior pads at regular intervals, ect. Your helmet will last much longer than five years. If you want to change it because it no longer fits or because you simply want a new helmet because technology changed, then let that be the reasons to change it. If you crash it, change it.

    I totally agree with the road side assistance! I have had AAA for 30 years. I had my kids cover on it too when they started riding & driving. I go on alot of long trips on my bike & with my boat & truck. It has save me & my kids many times over the years. Its well worth the cost. One tow can cost as much as a few years of AAA coverage.

    The problem with starting out on a dual sport is that you don't really see the similarity between the riding posture of one of those when you're going to upgrade to a supersport or a SBK. Most people don't like the sporty seating posture on these bikes and they won't transition from sitting upstraight to leaning over onto the handlebars without having comfort issues.

      Matt McNeil bikes just kinda go straight unless to tell them otherwise. if you look up some highside wrecks sometimes the bike will just stand up and keep going.

    • @humanbraininrobotbod
      @humanbraininrobotbod 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, like when we used to ghost ride our bicycles when we were kids.
      I was thinking more of the reaction time to go from hands off bars to hands back in control of the bike. If a critter ran out in front of you, you would travel quite a ways in the half second it takes to get back in control of the bike, depending on your speed of course.
      You may have lightning reflexes, but you travel 45 feet in a half second at 60 mph. It could make the difference between stopping / avoiding and having to pick up a bunch of broken plastic off the roadway.
      This is just for discussion's sake BTW, not trying to criticize unduly.

      I have a question. How much does that roadside assistance cost? You could probably take that money and put it up, and then just pay for the tow. I own a truck and trailer so I could call someone to get it and come get me, unless I'm like way off somewhere, I guess it could be worth it. But even then it's limited to 100 miles, so prolly not worth it.

    Great advice. I couldn't agree more especially when it comes to investing in good gear. Sure it's expensive. But how does that compare to your life or even serious injury? I have leather riding pants and kevlar jeans and I wear CE armor (knee and hip) under both. Personally, the armor that comes with a lot of these jeans tends to move around too much so I have my own separate armor that I wear. Works great and doesn't move.
    Again, great advice man. Ride safe and have a great 2016!

    I wish I would have pulled the fairings off too, To late now but I am never selling my bike anyways. I agree with the gear deal. A lady pulled out in front of me 4 1/2 months ago. I am waiting on going into surgery right now. I have collar bone broke in 6 places 3 ribs separated from sternum, 1 cracked rib in back, two torn tendons one 1cm the other over 50% tear, and more, but no road rash and I recall sliding backward on my stomach for at least 25 feet. Gear does not make you invincible but it will save you a ton of misery. Every piece of gear i was wearing was either tore or scraped or bashed. But other than internal injuries not one scratch on the outside. Currently unable to motovlog, the injuries and the snow on the ground. Looking forward to next season though.

And that makes me sad, because you might end up gettin a FUCKED UP DAY! Or giving others a FUCKED UP DAY! By doing so. Not paying attention to what you're doing, is a bigger kill-factor than alcohol! Atleast in my country, and I'm from Denmark, so I'm a viking.. We drink like we got terminal cancer.. So please, a friendly request from me.. Don't put your own or others safety above vlogs. By not paying attention to what you do! Besides that, respect from Denmark! :)

    Take an empty Styrofoam coffee cup and roll it in an arc across a table until you figure out how camber thrust causes it to turn. How can two different diameter circles attached to each other both turn one revolution at the same time? Notice that your motorcycle tires are rounded and not flat bottomed like car tires. Take a freshman calculus and physics class. Position, velocity, acceleration and mass are the business of Sir Isaac Newton and every motorcyclist. A light bulb is not just going to go off in your head and you will realize that the forces acting at the contact patches of your tire add in vector fashion, not linear (grade school) fashion. Braking marker, corner turn in, apex and corner exit are just positions. Easy, easy, easy.

    See that the thing, you didn't say " The right hand can be an ALTERNATE" hand signal. Its not the proper way to signal. Everything ive read from the link you sent me says its acceptable but 9 times out of 10 you shouldn't use it unless view is obscured from other drivers... You said its how you signal and its NOT. If your viewers are younger children come correct and explain yourself. Your thorough on everything else, why no that... Like i said , kicking around lookibg for trash videos
