Cool list, I’m guessing you didn’t use laser rapier much because that definitely belongs to S tier. Here’s a tip: apply two berserk patches and throw an EMP under Diego or any Cortex reaver’s feet, you can kill them with only 3 hits.
@@nakfoor1846 Having not used the Laser Rapier a lot, and after playing through the game, I think that makes it worthwhile if it can literally end bosses that easily. Most weapons you find at the beggining are sadly set aside, but if you find a Rapier, then that means you can stuff it in the Cargo Lift and just use it for bosses.
@@nakfoor1846 You don't have to at all actually. I was able to pretty easily kill Diego's first fight with only 8 hits, without EMPs at all, no Berserk patch. Turns out he's really bad at turning around in time.
@@nakfoor1846 Not really. I used one berserker and simply sharged Diego. He went down easy, took off one third of my health bar, but that is not much considering it was a boss fight and I only needed one berserker patch plus little energy.
@@nakfoor1846 Or rather you can use stun and/or berserk to make ludicrously OP boss-ending weapon, normally it's just hideously powerful. Of course, being melee, it is not optimal to just charge with it across open space, but most enemies can be temporarily distracted by hacking, allowing you to close the gap and slice them up before they can react.
I'd largely agree, but I'd swap the Skorpion and the Assault Rifle around. The later bots drop Assault Rifle ammo, and by the end I had a hundred rounds spare, despite using it A LOT. The Skorpion is good for a while, but it's just too inaccurate at range. The Assault Rifle, after the upgrade can empty a clip into the big bad cyborgs so fast they only get one or two shots off. It's definitely S-tier for punch and accuracy. The Skorp is A tier for midgame but loses soon after by bad accuracy and lower DMG. The Ion Rifle is brilliant for its versatility. After the energy saving upgrade, it's very useful against pretty much all the enemies and obsoletes the sparq beam. The charged shot is Soooooo good for taking out the big guys. But yeah, it's an energy sucker. With shields and grav boots, you find yourself running back to the recharge station A LOT. Pretty much everything else, I agree with your assessment having finished the game :)
I just beat the game on 2 and the plasma rifle was nice, but the primary takes a ton of energy. The secondary which requires special ammo shoots this insane bouncing ball that seems to hurt you if you get hit by it. I did one shot strong enemies with it though. I beat all the bosses with Rapier and berserk, not sure how that holds up on 3 though.
The ion pulse weapon is nice. The overcharge mode is a 3/4 strength version of the rail gun basically. It does take up more inventory space though and used more energy until you find the mod that 'll make it use the same energy as the sparq. I think either the sparq or the ion pulse are good choices, but sparq is probably the best choice if you plan on conserving inventory space more. Plasma Rifle is really cool, but just a novelty at the end of the day. It can kill you quite easily. Plus kind of a inventory and power hog. Not sure it's worth keeping into the bridge. A case can be made for the fully upgraded pistol if you're concerned more with using emps and frags and taking pot shots at the enemy. The only drawback of the skorpian is that it chews through ammo. the 3 round burst more for the pistol is kind of a nice intermediary option (which you can turn to single shot for cameras and such)
The SparqBeam is the king. I used it for a run, exclusively on the middle power setting. It's easy to fool the AI for most of the game, by baiting the enemy into shooting, then jumping out of cover while they're on cooldown. The Sparq is the master for this, especially once it gets the damage upgrade.
Cool video, I would move the rapier up to A tier however, seeing how im nearing the end of my melee/grenade only run with little hangups, plus it can trivialize almost any encounter if set up correctly. The upgraded magpulse would be A tier for me as well due to the insane amount of ammo it gets mid-late game.
Rapier is S. Swiftboots to the enemy, esp if turned around. Start smacking, 2-3 hits for big guys down. Even bosses drop like flies with a melee boost taken.
Mag Pulse should be S tier. On hard mode once I got the damage upgrade I was oneshotting bots all day, not to mention you find plenty of ammo for it. I definitely found it more useful than the Assault Rifle for sure (which is just a worse Skorpion).
Magpulse feels a bit underwhelming with its DoT and pump-action (you need to hide from an enemy you'd just doubletap with overcharged Sparq with upgraded cooling) but maybe it's just the original SS1 talking.
@@ferrousscale Nope, mag pulse is really weak, is a poke and hide gun, rather use the rapier and doge. The Energie expenditure per damage is insane, also the rapier ignores armor.
Good list. I personally love the grenade launcher for my explosive solution because I feel like I'm always missing grenade throws or the enemy leaves the blast radius before it detonates. For my weapons I like the rapier, sparq, smg, and grenade launcher. I think the Sparq falls off a little at the climax in favor of the SMG and assault rifle just because there is so much ammo. But still, the humble Sparq is reliable 80% of the game and is S tier. I believe you are correct about the rapier being B. Melee usually relies on other tools to be viable instead of standing on its own.
If you could only use a single weapon then rapier wouldn't be S tier, but you're going to be using more than one. Plus hacking is an often overlooked melee helper that doesn't necessarily waste non-renewable resources. As for grenade launcher - you can achieve the effects and most of damage by just tossing grenades, so the question is whether extra damage and being able to put instant boom directly on target is worth 8 inventory squares.
With The Patches, and proper playing and evasion; Sword is easily the S Tier melee option, not as good as it was in OG but still OP when used properly, energy drain is its biggest detriment, but keep your batteries in check and that won't be an issue.
I'm in Executive map first playthrough. Skorpion feels so much better atm than Assault Rifle, but maybe after upgrade and more ammo drops in late game it will be different. So maybe I feel different after completing the game. I wonder if these have had nerfs or buffs in patches though. I'm carrying Rapier, Sparqbeam, Assault Rifle / Magnum depending on which I have more ammo for at the moment.
Personally I noticed that the Minipistol really started to fall off by Storage, even in Maintenance tbh, there is a damage upgrade but you dont get that until you visit Reactor and by that time you'll have a Scorpion with a damage upgrade. I would just use the minipistol for Medical and Research, after that, just use the Magnum and the Skoprion once you find one. The Sparq carries way further into the game to the point where I kept it way until I got to Executive until I finally swapped it out for the Ion Gun. I agree with the magpulse too, it seemed to be good against the heavy robots you right early on but once you get the magnum damage upgrade, that kills things as fast if not faster and is equally effective against both organics and robots.
I think fully upgraded minipistol being just shittier Skorpion is actually its main selling point - it's a decent stopgap before Skorpion becomes available. Plus, its damage output might not be great, but burst can get autobombs very reliably even when you have very brief window of opportunity and no clean shot. Once you get Skorpion, you can toss it.
Raiper should be S, Highest DPS of all weapons with berserk and Shotgun shoud be A, two pumps most enemies and has an abundance of ammo. Plasma rifle could be S as the alt fire is a bouncing railgun, a bit tricky to use but is the most powerful weapon. Can one shot cortex reapers when the plasma ball gets stuck in their heads. I also killed Diego with two shots, may potentially one shot him if you get it stuck in his hitbox as well .
(Forewarning, I played 2 on everything except puzzles, which I played on 3) I found the Scorpion but didn't use it because: A.) It doubles the space required to carry it compared to the pistol B.) It only does slightly more damage and armor pen compared to the pistol C.) Churns ammo at a high rate On a first playthrough, unknowing of how much ammo I'd have by the late game, the SMG is a terrible choice. Magnum was definitely my preferred by the end of the game along with the rifle, pistol, prox mines, Ion Rifle, and the Plasma Rifle (which I used on the last boss). I don't remember if I was carrying the shotgun or the Mag-Pulse by the end-game but I remember being kinda underwhelmed by both. Maybe that is because I always forgot what the overcharge button for the Mag-Pulse was though and preferred to use the Sparq/Ion. I literally never found the grenade launcher my entire playthrough, despite doing what I thought was an extensive sweep. Idiotically, not realizing how close I was to the end and wanting to keep current weapons, I never picked up the Railgun, despite carrying four stacks of ammo for the thing by the end, due to space requirements.
Proximity mines are indeed broken. I dumped like 7 of them in the final boss fight, before it even started. Boss jumped on em and the fight was over. Pretty disappointing actually.
I really didn’t like the feel of the rifle. Its spread is very wide, the sound is so so and it’s just feels very wooden overall. The melee weapons are a joke as far as feeling goes as there’s very little to no feedback. Using a wrench and a pipe this might be due to the way it’s held - in real life this would soften the blow dramatically making it pointless and that’s how it feel in game too. Rapier is quite good though damage wise when combined with, what’s it called… berserk enhancement drug. I defeated all bosses in seconds - but I did play on 1112 as it felt nicely balanced for story and exploration when moded for a bit more aggressive enemies. I prefer few enemies and suspense than doom style combat😂
Yeah the Sword is possibly one of the best weapons in the game, I think it also multi-hits if things are close enough so the berserk patch just kind of wins fights.
Did I miss something? I started a new game and I found the Sparqbeam. I didn’t see that when I first played the game. Running around with the pipe like an asshole. Is that new?? 😂
I saved the grenade launcher for after beta grove. at that point you really should be ditching your lower power weapons, and this is the area where you need to slam frags into long range targets, until you run out of the gas and frag grenade types. then you drop it for the railgun and stage 8+. it's BFG time. put holes in everything.

But I feel like thats the crutch of the weapon, you have to stun or berserk to make melee viable.

Flavor-wise, sad that the Skorpion is now basically a plain 9 mm MP5. In the original, it somehow fired "superheated" "slag" rounds.
Rapier is either S-Tier, or A-Tier and only held back from S-Tier by being melee.
Everyone bad talking my boy the grenade launcher yet it carried me through the hardest situations of this game.

The Sparq is the Plasma Cutter of System Shock (or is the Plasma Cutter the Sparq of Dead Space?). Old reliable, will always be useful.

I checked pistol vs scorp, scorp does less, it's more the fact you can pour 50 bullets in late game very fast.
It has less raw damage, but the higher armor penetration more than makes up for it.
