    Hi, Mike! Love your no nonsense, informative, inspirational and invaluable teaching style. Your love of photography and the ability to convey that love is both genuine and generous. Selfishly, I (and I'm sure thousands others) hope you never stop anytime soon.Your Vietnam pictures are amazing! Wonderful storytelling, with the ability to immerse the viewer in a culture not their own. You comment on Vietnam's skies really struck a chord. They were and are the most dramatic, vivid and ever changing skies I have ever personally witnessed.

    Something that this and many of your other videos show are that such an important part of photography is imagination, and patience. You're enthusiasm really shows through and just makes me want to watch another video to help me learn.

      Thanks again Andy. It is indeed. Cameras don't take pictures - we take pictures using a camera. it's our tool and like all tools results depend on how we use them. If you're starting out on this amazing photo journey all the wealth of information and opinions about what's important and what's not and so many different ways to do the same thing it can be confusing. Please take a look at my Beginners Course because it distills down all of it into what a beginner needs now, without confusing you with stuff that doesn't make sense until you've got the basics firmly into your subconscious. I mean, no one can be creative when struggling to work out what settings to use. You can se a free sample at the link below... Take care - MIKE :-)

    What a photogenic place, and so well presented. I love how you show us how to think about making our images rather than just taking the first snap we see.

      Thank you +Andrew Frost Photography is all about thinking. Everything begins in our heads because cameras don't take pictures - people take pictures. I have a live talk about this and will be publishing dates and locations in next few weeks. Please take a look... Mike

    Excellent video Mike. I love these sorts of thinking through the shot videos. I love to watch your channel and others for tips like this but you are the only one doing this sort of thinking video which is probably the most helpful compared to settings, gadgets, and gear stuff. I wished I lived closer so I could avail of your workshops. Maybe someday you'll come to Newfoundland Canada it's quite the spot to do a traveling workshop!
    Quick question what kind of wrist strap are you using in this video it looks great.

      Thank you +Mike Browne for the advice I purchased the Ultimate Beginners Course and found that to be a great resource and I learned so much from it. I was wondering if I was ready for the 7 Building Blocks of Photography or not and I am buying this today. I also need to say that I buy your products because they sell themselves with the free videos and great service you provide. There are many TH-camrs out there selling products that I have no interest in supporting. I feel great paying for your products because I know I will keep seeing great new content from you by supporting what you do.
      Thanks again for all your work and if you do ever get to our lovely province it would be a pleasure to meet you. Good luck and all the best in the future.

    Watching your videos, it always looks so simple! I like the way you explain what's in your head, it's very informative.
    I'm at the point where my technique is okay, but my compositions a bit clumsy.
    Seeing how you turn some places from "okay" to "great" just with a good composition is very inspiring.

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you syrotas
      Composition is one of the fundamental building blocks of photography and it has nothing to do with camera settings. Light is another and that isn't a technical function either. So goo to know I'm inspiring you ... Thanks again - MIKE :-)

    My God, you have no idea how much I enjoyed this video. Specially the last part. I was chanting and directing Orpheus in the underworld along. Awesome!!! Love that piece.
    BTW Mike, thanks a TON for your composition ideas. It really really made me go out and revisit places here were I live, that I'm tired of shooting, but now I see that I can keep squeezing good stuff from it, just by moving and changing angles. And zooming in. One tend to try and get as much stuff in the frame, that all ends being so busy. So, simplicity is the key. Great stuff.
    I was kind of expecting that the sun would be higher in the sky, with almost no shadows. That is one difficult way of shooting, but I guess is better to just go and grab a bite, until the sun comes down a little bit, so there are some shadows, isn't it?
    So much fun, as always.

    Hi Mike thanks for the good instructions. I´m using the X-T1 and what a camera! Maybe you do have some tutorials about the settings you use with it? Like adjustment of the filters to get the best results in this kind og´f environment and location: either is color or black and white? What do you prefer?

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks +Jaime Reyes Palencia I don't really use any filters or fancy settings. I shoot RAW in Aperture priority 99% of the time. Occasionally shoot manual when I want to use a big ND filter, which isn't often. I don't shoot in black and white because I always use RAW. If I want a monochrome image I change it in Lightroom. Not sure this is the answer you were hoping for but I hope it helped.. MIKE

    • @jaimereyesp9046
      @jaimereyesp9046 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike... Yeah you just answer my question... By the way perhaps I´m thinking of adjustments that improve the average result of the images when captured... I´ve seen some tutorials about it so I was only wondering if there was some to notice in the actual environment that you shot... thanks a lot you do a great work!

    Hi Mike, great video! I have a similar dilemma with an upcoming shoot. The location has the model in the sun and a waterfall in the shade. It's a tough spot up high and I can't see the waterfall from any other angle. If I expose for the model then the falls will be dark? I took some cell pics of the location the other day, any way I can show you what I'm talking about? Thx!

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes exposed for the model the falls will be dark +JPY And if you shoot on a sunny day it'll probably be even darker because contrast levels will be very high. Suggest you shoot RAW on an overcast day and use artificial lighting on the model. You can't light a waterfall, it's too big. But a human.... Hope this helps - MIKE

    • @JPYvideos
      @JPYvideos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thx for responding Mike! What can I do to keep the falls bright enough though? At this location, the sun is never over the falls but behind it. My plan is to shoot around 3:30 for the best model light but I don't want to lose the falls in the process. It would negate the the reason for shooting there. Any light balance techniques perhaps?

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JPY Only what I suggested. Shoot on dull day so light between model and falls is more balanced, subtle artificial lighting on model to make her stand out. Nothing else you can do apart from find a different waterfall ... MIKE

    Hi Mike, do you explain in your 7 building blocks of photography what and what not to cut off on the sides of the frame, whether it's a portrait, landscape, etc..? because I want to know for example, why did you include the shrub above the girl's window? and why did you keep the green window shades on the left of the frame, but cut them off on the right? Is there a rule for such a thing, or is it case-subjective? Thanks and keep up the great work.

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks +Ahmed Bebars There are no 'rules' as such and it is as you said "case-subjective". I put the photos together the way i did because that's how I like them. It's that simple. The 7 Blocks does not tell you what is right, wrong, or how you 'should' make the image. It will teach you how to think through your images so you get what YOU want to shoot. It tackles situations like when you shoot an image and when you look at it you realise it's not how you wanted it to be. Complete The 7 Blocks and you will be able to think through each shot, know how you want it to be and then make the camera capture it.
      Please note - there are no camera settings or explanations of things like controlling exposure, depth of field or similar techniques. The 7 Blocks is for photographers who are able to do this already. - MIKE

    I sometimes have trouble aligning things in the viewfinder, I can't seem to keep things steady enough. So when one side of the frame is well aligned, and I shift may attention to properly align another side, any slight movement will mess up where the first side was set, I then have to repeat the process all over again. To me, it's quite challenging keeping an eye on all four sides and corners of the frame.

    As you're using an 18-55mm lense on a day out, would you recommend takin this lense on a holiday as an all rounder

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard question +sharon prosser because it depends what you want to shoot and how you want it to look. I use my 18-55 most of the time and look for images that work for that focal range. But it wouldn't be great for something a long way away, candids of people from a distance or particularly good for shallow depth of field work for example. So when i only have the 18-55 I avoid shots like this... - Best to take a range from 18-200 if you want to cover all possibilities... MIKE

    • @10shxf
      @10shxf 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mike Browne yes thats a very good point, i also have an 18-70 mm nikon lense which is nice to use , +18-200 which is fairly heavy, its a dilemma when planning which 1 to take on a holiday , which probably includes a lot of scenery, and also 1 which is not too heavy 😨 thank u

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      sharon prosser I'd take the 18-200 because it's got pretty much all eventualities covered in one lens, which in the end weighs less than carrying 2 or 3 - MIKE
