If I remember correctly Blood Parrots get that black peppering type look when they are highly stressed. They will pretty much retreat to a section of the tank and be very skittish. However, it will go away but also come back here and there.

Yes. I have 2 and they used to get the black on them when I had a Chinese algae eater that would irritate them . I removed the algae eater and they are not stressed any more and no more black ❤️

I purchased goldfish from my school. They bought them as a valentine fundraiser where you could anonymously buy one for someone else. I went straight to the principle and said "this is a terrible idea. Dont do this. I will buy them all just please end this right now!" And they were just like "okay sure I guess...." I brought them home in a week. They had bought ten but while they were staying at the school half of them had died! I had the other five, of which sadly one more passed away. I've had the other four for almost a year and a half. They have more than trippled the size and all are in good health. Still can't belive my school thought that was okay.

Too bad your petco is like that... they’re not all bad though, my local Petco is great. All tanks are planted and get 50% water changes every two days or so. They also have a quarantine system for their fish. They don’t all suck, but unfortunately most do.
Edit: I made a couple edits to this, specifically the water change one. I kind of wrote this comment and forgot about it and didn’t really check my facts. Everybody’s been really worried about the 50% water change thing, and I don’t know why I wrote that in the first place, it’s not true and it’s more like every two days or so. However it is important for the stores to frequent water changes because they cycle through a lot of fish and the tanks are typically heavily stocked. Also, by planted I mean they have some nice mats of Java ferns and a Anubias and plants for sale in pots in the tanks, not aquascaped or anything like that

Toby Creates my petco is TERRIBLE. One fish died ON THE WAY HOME and there was at least 5-6 dead fish in each tank. Most of the fish died in 1 month except for a few gouramis and angelfish. The water levels in my fish tank was perfect. I’m just disappointed. Your petco sounds great!

    • @tayanderson1468

This is so awesome! And even though it may increase sales for places like Petco, it also calls them out for the neglectful treatment of their animals. I used to work there and although I, and other employees tried very hard to keep the tanks clean and the animals alive, it is like fighting a losing battle when there are 50+ tanks and 2 employees responsible for all the maintenance. It is a system set up for failure and cruelty.
This little guy deserved a chance as an individual and you did the right thing. Thank you for showing how someone can make a difference without becoming an aquarium expert! It can be intimidating but you simplified it wonderfully! I say keep saving fish and make it public where they were saved from to raise awareness because most people really have no idea.

Similar happened to me...I was at meijer and I always stop by the pet department to check out the fish. Not necessarily to check on their well being but more so to learn their behavior and such as I'm fairly new to home aquatics.
I happened to notice a blood parrot down on the bottom row of tanks with the feeder gold fish. I told the lady working the department that fish is not a cold water fish and may probably be dead by the end of the week. She told she couldn't do anything about it. I said " you mean, You can't get a net and place him in a tank with the correct temperature for his species?"
She tells me that meijer now has a third party outfit come in once a week to stock, decorate, blah, blah and she is only allowed to feed them.
Whoa I thought. She then says ,you should buy him. I didn't exactly go there to buy a fish, I didn't have room for him anywhere but he went home with me a anyway.
Same condition , black spots, laying sideways , lethargic......now a year later he is as healthy as can be , 3 times the size and happily shares a tank with my Oscar & a fire mouth cichlid.

Just saw your video from Dodo. You’re a hero! I personally would love to watch more rescue videos. It’s great to be informed on how to properly take of fish (if anyone is looking to start an aquarium or needs help on how to maintain one)
Anyways, hope you are doing well. ☺️

Work at a pet store and I appreciate you saving this guy, the fisheries are just shit. We dont have enough employees, or any quarantine tanks it's just sad. Wish these companies would actually care for their animals.

We bought 3 goldfish from PetSmart. One was orange, one white and orange, and one black and yellow. We did that so you could tell them apart because each of my daughters has one. The black and yellow lost all of his black and is now bright orange. I accused my husband of switching the fish out. I thought the black one died and he couldn't find another that looked like him. He denied it so I researched it and realized the black one was sick, but is now flourishing. It has been amazing to research with my kids and learn more about them. We are really enjoying the fish and just added a snub-nosed pleco. Even though we chose him by accident, he needed us. The three of them are always together. They seem to be really happy.

I am proud of you, man. Most people don't see suffering. And you would make a good veterinarian, or even a nurse or physician. You kept it simple. You created a healthy environment in which his immune system could thrive and fight the infection.
