Good shit!!! I love these dudes. True shit : I went to school with Charlie Hunter.. and he was badass by 13. I remember I wanted to learn metal like Iron Maiden, at the time I was a classical piano player, and the very idea of learning guitar and coming off like Dave Murray was almost terrifying. Charlie said " you should check out jazz.." when I asked why, he told me metal was too boring. Later he showed us all the Iron Maiden and Dio and Scorpions shit super casually and note for note. At 13. Talented dude.
Wow, I often wondered what his background was. I saw him 30 years ago here in Melbourne (Australia) and he was INCREDIBLE, blew everybody's minds. Great story, thanks for sharing🙏
That’s why those old tunes rock metal and Brockton are so popular because many of them most of them simply do not require that much theory or skills to pull them off well for the average player
I can relate. I’ve been playing guitar for many years, and I think of myself as a “rocker,” but if I’m honest…if I’m not ruining a cover song, my original stuff sounds like jazz. Really BAD jazz…
Crazy man. I was listening to Charlie in 1998 then met him in Brooklyn in 2004. I was getting the opportunity to open for the great Melvin Taylor at the Terra on Bleecker and before the gig, Charlie was there and I was bullshitting w him for a few mins. He was great. Then as Melvin was playing, Charlie came on stage and was introduced. I had no idea I was talking to him lol 🤣 Ironically, it was at the same blues club that a guy gave me a copy of The Gales Bros. Been a fan ever since and even though this recording leaves much to be desired, it is still awesome to see these cats together. Actually, I guess it's not that strange at all 🤔
love how everybody is casually feeling out each instrument while Eric just immediately crushes Cory's strat and makes it his bitch for 15 straight minutes
eric gales' direction in improvising is so nice. lots of guitarists sound aimless after a few minutes of soloing, kind of have moments of greatness but most of it feels eh. he gives you the meat & potatoes with gravy every time in contrast
I like how Charlie masterly booted the guitar player out the session played corys guitar for a min then switched back to his own instrument n givin back corys guitar lol nicely played
Its important to point out to younger players who might find this discouraging that these dudes have , for periods of their lives, dived into full immersion practice routines, and then the same for rehearsals. Thats what you have to do from time to time. No distractions, just unlocking the beast. So...play what you play, and if it matters, put your ass in the chair, and learn to play it well. It will be a feather in your cap for life.
For sure. I think even in general, in every genre you hear about "overnight successes" but what most people gloss over is that most of them have been working on their craft for YEARS. Even a lot of the young, mainstream pop/singer songwriters/etc have been writing lyrics or music as preteens/teenagers. Every great musician I know were "bad" at one point, the difference is they've put in the work.. put in the reps.
@@justraaayGreat comment! Kinda supports a theory of mine (not original by any means) that for every child prodigy virtuoso out there, there’s probably at least two cats (or catesses) who “wanted it THAT bad” and did the work. I wonder how many, even amongst these four, are “naturals?” Probably doesn’t matter, because they’re all so good that the line blurred years ago.
I think I hear a little "Mama Told Me So" (Crusaders) goin' on here. Amazing jam. The chap sitting next to Eric Gales doesn't play much here, but holy smokes is he good!!
I watch something like this in absolute awe at the level of ability you can achieve on guitar… it makes me think… why do a Feckin bother!!!!??? 😂👍🏻🤘 awesome!!!!!
@christopherkendrex8075 CH is no slouch on tambo though! I saw him with TJ Kirk a while back and he played the melody to Monk's Well You Needn't on tambo, doing the conguero thing of sliding his finger across the head, it was some next level ish
Whos the guy in the blue shirt? Anybody know? I think i saw him down at the Asbury Yacht club in NJ one night They were just messing around outside doing Eleanor Rigby into who knows and it was freaking awesome 👌 Love to know more about this guy
I snuck inside a bar when I was 16 around 98-99. Only went to get drunk. Had no clue who Eric Gales was. I learned real quick lol.
As Eric would say....YESSUH! Thanks for taking a look please subscribe to our channel if you get a chance.
Had no idea he could drum like that

eric gales and charlie hunter are actually insane

Charlie hides it well, but he does have a clear and present crazy streak.
They worship at the feet of Funk Madness

3 of my favorite guitarists in the same room, actually playing together. These are the things us music lovers dream of!🎶
