- In the late 70s, Fender started making all their large amps with Master Volumes, Gain Boosts, and Ultra-Linear output transformers. This resulted in more headroom and power output, but it was also a controversial change amongst players, who sometimes claim these changes hurt the tone. In this video, we'll repair this completely original example of a 1977 vintage example and demo the tone to see if this is true.

wow ripped out original caps. Should have just ran the amp on a lightbulb and left it in.
I'll let someone else take this one. I don't have the energy for it.
It was repaired for customer who sure wants to gig with this amp so light bulb is not and option in this case, this needs to be as update and in specs as possible. It’s worksman amp, not museum piece.
The aroma of charred power transformer interiors is amongst my least favorite smells in the world. You didn't see Brad do a leakage test on those caps. The main reason is he already knows they're leaking (acting like a resistor). I would bet my vehicles on it. I've never seen one of those that wasn't leaking (at least in the last 20 years.
It doesnt change the sound at all anyway, ive change 100s of filter caps, and compared the sound after words, replacing out of spec resistors u can get a sound change or caps in the signal path but not bypass caps or filter caps, as long as you use same size otr measure them to see how much they drifted.
It's the customers amp. The customer tells Brad what work he wants doing to the amp, in relation to how he wants to use it. That is exactly what Brad he has done here. You can't leave old caps in a gigging amp. Don't have a go at a Guy for doing work that he has been asked to do.
1080p is just fine for me. and im sure a bunch of us watch on phones anyways.
I don’t care if you film it on 16mm and transfer it to digital. Your repair videos are terrific. Thanks.
If I may speak for all of us….please keep making amp repair videos! Nothing else like it. 👍🏻
Agree with some others, love the new REPAIR vid Brad! Like I've said on another comment, these videos are the heart and soul of the channel. I think the guys that regularly watch the new repair videos are mostly long watchers of the channel
Absolutely 💯. I get the feeling that other content puts more food on his table, but Brad is the reason I am an amp builder, and I greatly miss his amp content !!
Good to see an amp repair video.
Happy to see an amp up on the bench again - it's what you do best.☺
I could watch a 30 minute video of just you playing. The amp sounds wonderful. That Temu Strat shines under your fingers.
Sounds absolutely beautiful! Wonderful job as always Brad!
Wouah ! Great sound on this amp and nice play from you thank you Guitologist !
This is why I still have my 80’s Deluxe Reverb, gets the job done👍
As long as your putting out videos bud im happy!!!
Keep them amp repair videos coming! Love it!
Year ago, I pulled an older 70s Super reverb from a dumpster, took it to Mad Science Works in Raleigh NC where they replaced the caps. I also had to replace two busted speakers and then sold it to someone who I knew would take good care of it. That sure was a great sounding amp and I kinda wish I didn't sell it. But to me the Vibrolux/verb sounded just a taste better. I will always keep my eyes open because I hate seeing good amps tossed in the dumpster.
Watched last night. Excellent Excellent video. 🇺🇸
Loving the neck on that Strat, really sets it off! Nice repair to a cool amp.
Yes inject an old school, none political, no pissy social commentary repair video into my veins
What? You didn't hear him knock Chinese and Russian tubes?
@@cd3949 that could be interpreted as a political statement, but it can also be interpreted as a quality statement.
I'm no expert but I've heard that audiophiles like the sound of vintage tubes better and it fits the bill with the gitologist him having a "they don't make'em like they used to" mentality.
@@RealGengarTV It was a joke.
@@cd3949 oh I'm sorry I didn't understand your sarcasm through a written comment. My bad 😅
i've herd a quite a few demo's of these master volume supers , they sound great to me ...
Got this one myself. So great to see ya doin the usual fender fix. You and Uncle Doug have taught me alot about my old fenders. Say Brad.... you ever work on the ole "red devil" fender ? Mine has died and has the mix of a "pcb" with tubes as usual?
Thanks for all the informative work!
I think it sounds great! Why are the 70's Silver Face amps looked down upon compared to their older siblings?
I used to go to capsule music in Toronto and play all their Super Reverbs back to back - the CBS eras were just as good as the blackface. The Supers are my favourite fender amps.
Some of the 70s Fenders tended to be a bit messier in the wiring, and the linear OT setup can tend to overdrive less easily, but they are still worlds better than todays reissues.
I had one of the "super-linear" 70 watters, 1978-made I believe. Sounded great clean, but stupidly loud!
Traded it for a Silverface Princeton Reverb and some cash..
Back around 1965. when CBS bought Fender, the CBS engineers decided that they needed to get rid of the 'nasty distortion' that the Blackface amps exhibited, so they redesigned many of the amps - the larger ones, mainly - which players (who loved the 'Fender tone', distortion and all) didn't like.
At the same time, CBS made changes to their production, many of which were deemed to make Fenders inferior (same thing happened at Gibson when Norlin bought them). "Can you say '3-bolt neck,' boys and girls? I knew you could..."
Silverface Fender amps are usually great, and are excellent values. However, the main reasons in my opinion, that they don't hold up to the "Blackface" amps, is that the glued in baffles and glued up cabs, not finger jointed cabinets are a down grade over the pre 1972 SRs. Also lots of spaghetti and frankly some shoddy work happened in the 70s. If you have been inside a Silverface, you see plenty of poor solder joints and work that would never have passed QC pre-1969. 1969 was the year that the scales started to tip towards shoddy work and then the glued in baffles and cabs came in about 1972. HOWEVER, I'm only comparing these to classic "Blackface" amps. By modern standards, "Silverface" build quality is generally excellent. For those of you who will attack me for my opinion: I own a stock 1967 blackface Super Reverb and a 1969 silverface Super Reverb (and a bunch of other black and silver Fender amps). The build quality on the 1967 is much better than the 1969. They both sound great, but build quality-wise the 67 beats the 69. Again, the 69 is fine and is great by today's standards, but the 67 is better.
Starting to really love vintage Fender amps. Picked up a mint condition 65 Vibro Champ last week for $75…still had the original tubes and cover. Sounds amazing (after having a tech look to make sure it was safe lol) same lady also sold me a Maestro Rhythm King for $70. Deals be out there, just have to look
You STOLE those! Where you located?
@@TheGuitologist RI, got them on FB marketplace. Lady had literally just listed them and I caught the ad. She was really nice, knew what she had but wanted them to go to someone that would use them. I posted about it on the gear page with a few pics
Hey Brad thanks for taking care of this Super Reverb for me.
It sounds awesome .
Years ago when I bought this amp, I was able to play it next to a 64 blackface super reverb both were for sale and I had intentions of buying the black face but I actually preferred this one over the blackface one.
Thanks
Glad to see you back at the bench with a new (to us) amp; I'd never kvetch about the video quality, just so you know...keep up the good work.
So educational about all real amplifiers and guitar thanks for your videos I'm trying to figure out maintenance and you are better than most I have seen thanks again bless you
Some mighty fine playing there chief !
whoa BRAD at 29:10 you landed a lick I have NEVER heard before - without doubt the best amp sound, control setting, & shreddy test licks in Guitologist channel hstory!
Thank for the tip on Cleaner and Lube. I needed that info, tinkering with a little tube amp I came across. It's budget, but after swapping the 2 power tubes and 3 pre amp tubes I now have a great little 15 watt with Attenuator that drops to 1 watt. Real Reverb tank, not digital. Thanks again, Brad
Putting the SUPER ..back in its reverb 😉 really enjoyed this brad !
thankyou!👍good luck with that camera matey!😇fingers xst!
Great video Brad. Take care.
This is the nicest it can be! Awesome!
I just got a Fender Frontman FM212R fixed by Donald Lee Amp service, Central FL. He'll make any Fender amp brand new if its made before 2019ish, much like you. Old Journey bands amp magician. 50 dep 100 an hour. Great channel, and your knowledge is inspiring!
Sounds amazing!
This was great Brad...I usually don't comment. Just enjoy your content, Thanks.
Nice video man!
Right to point well done...
Man i had one of these back in the mid 80s and id give anything to have it back! I think mine was an early 70s model. It looked like it had been dragged behind a truck, and as it heated up you'd swear someone was frying fish. But, after those tubes heated up enough to light a cigarette on, it definitely had the God tone. Everything worked and it was full of that classic Fender sparkle. I paid $250.00 for it which was alot for a 15 year old punk kid. My pedal board consisted of an Austin distortion pedal, a japenese made Lotus flying V and that was my entire rig. All anyone needed back then was a good clean tone, and a good overdriven sound. This amp was freaking loud too man. Cranked up it had just the right amount of overdrive, and kicking the distortion on gave me a really EVH brown sound that was solid and respectable. Better than pretty much everything made today.
Always wait for the Guitologist to pluck at the end of each vid…magic!!!
Awe ..sounds beautiful ...I would love one ..omg ..
Beautiful playing too Brad ..loved it ..sounded great on the phone thro Bluetooth speaker ..awesome ..

What the heck, is this Minecraft?
Kidding man, 1080 is just fine :) thanks for the video
Brad!! your just and awesome dude.. so very skilled and educated on so many levels..its always a good day when you post good shit!! which is most all of time and very honest content for sure
amazing job
I recently acquired a 75 pro reverb that is all original, including the caps. The amp sounds great and works just fine, but original caps from the 70s don't inspire great confidence in me whenever I turn the amp on. (Regardless of what some people think), so the amp is at a local shop right now awaiting new caps and anything else it might need. Can't wait to get it back! 45 watts, 2x12, and it came with a master volume, so it overdrives on its own!
Thanks for the video. I was actually looking at getting one of these. Maybe it is too loud for me. It sounded good but, man , that is a lot of power.
These mid/late 70's super reverbs were rated at 45 watts where the early ones were 40 watts. Begining in 1978, through 1981, they went to the ultra-linear versions where the power was rated at 70 watts using the same dual 6L6 output section. The ultra-linear amps get a bad wrap, but they actually sound fantastic if you're looking for super clean with a three dimential sound. Great for slide guitar.
Ultra-linear super reverb amps are great for playing surf rock too.
@@stevelark9840 We're barely gonna be able to hear the volume difference between a 40W & a 70W amp anyway, & especially not between a 40 & a 45W amp, as far as I know. You might see a difference in how far the volume knob is turned before the crunch starts I spose.
@@nevillegoddard4966 the point I'm making is, the super Brad highlighted in the video was not Fenders most powerful
@@stevelark9840 Yeah you're right mate! And so am I! So we're good? No harm done! Some people are gonna learn from what both of us have had to say!
The Amp sounds great, better than new after your repair. But I like the piece meal Strat you built, as for looks the roasted neck puts the icing on the cake. I bet it plays good, it sure sounds great.
I do miss these repair videos and the shit post Friday's hope to see more
I don't know whether I'll be doing too many more of them. The guitar viewing public would apparently rather see an unboxing of a brand new cheap PCB Chinese amp. Might as well focus on sponsored Chinese videos from now on.
@TheGuitologist I understand but that sucks I just like the knowledge and humor you share on both channels
Man, I saw you posted a video when I got up this morning (7-15), but I had to go out. When I got back it was gone. I think it was related to what happened Saturday. Bummer...
Yea dudes a piece of shit glad he deleted it. Implying the assassination was faked/staged is just a middle finger to the victims and their families. You can speculate but maybe wait a bit for the facts to come out before spewing your diarrhea to your followers
I sound like a broken record at this point, but best intros for these vids.
Great service of an awesome 70's Super Reverb. Tone demo at the end proves this silverface is no slouch in terms of tone and output. Blackface fans may prefer the 60's sound but this amp can certainly crank out some incredible sounds.
I enjoyed watching the process that you went through. The scope is a nice tool to have around. And you didn't use a tube tester device, but observed the tubes each at operating levels. I'm a little curious about that boost switch modification, and wonder if it's worth the trouble. Seems to sound good and is reversable. Thanks for sharing Mr. B
Brad the G-
Just plain fun watching.
Just like watching norm Abram and Bob villa on TOH on Saturdays at 5:30 pm.
fANTASTIC VIDEO. i LOVE THESE AMP REOPAIR VIDEOS. i HAVE GAINED A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE! tHANKS bRAD!

Does anyone know how to get rid of the clicking sound from the tremolo circuit on a Deluxe Reverb Reissue?????

I love my 100W Quad reverb 4x12 combo. That's a beast! LOUD as FUCK!!
That Temu strat plays pretty good. Have you done any upgrades to it since the competition with Shawn? I dig the color of the neck. Great amp. Love your show Ologist.
How much does the amp weigh? I had a Fender 75 -it almost pulled my arm out it's socket to move. Do they stuff the amp bottoms with lead?
My first tube amp was a super reverb that was made into a head. Stupid loud on 3.
Hey Brad, have you followed, or you know Unknown Hinson/Veg McArtful,? I found him a few weeks ago and went down the rabbit hole. Such a funny and talented virtuoso guitarist. Versatile with styles like Mr Bungle. Amazing. Public access channel stuff he did is hilarious. Veg McArtful character is a perfect McCartney parody.
I think the later Silverface Fender amps are looked down upon only when compared to their Blackface brethren. Mainly because of the much more pleasing overdriven tone of the Blackface amps. But you won’t find a better amp for classic American clean tones that also serves as a great pedal platform.
Exactly.
The Guitologist RULES
If you need to play at certain venues you needed that power output to get the guitar sound in the mix. I think its got a really good sound, although that heavy reverb crackle sound is an acquired taste
Sounds like the vision Leo had for his amps. Too bad the damn things weigh as much as compact cars
I have 2 tube amps & 1 solid state that are in need of attention. 1. Hot Rod Deluxe (made in USA), 2. Line 6 Bogner 212 works intermittently, Line 6 210 120 watt, works intermittently. can you help me? Thanks Ed
Video quality looked great . I watch on this years Samsung s9 tablet .
Any reasons why they increased the filter capacitors from 50ufs to 80ufs? for what reasons did they do this. You didn't explain about why they used an Ultra Linear Output Transformer and what is the advantages and benefits of using an ultra linear output transformer?
Ive read 2 diff. Things about screen grid resistors, ive herad you should use 2 watt carbon comp, so it will burn up rather then the tubes, but everyone i seen work on amps use 3 to 5 watts ceramic. Which is correct?
Screen resistors are not a sacrificial part as some people seem to think. You do not want them burning up. If you’re that concerned with the possibility of a screen grid catastrophe, install fuses on the screens.
@@TheGuitologist im not concerned at all ive never had one fail, ive heard other techs say they use 1 or 2 watt carbon comps. Just in case. But i use 5 watts on all them ive ever done. Not had a problem.
The Amp-Whisperer....
Great vid Brad. Just curious, wouldn’t the increased value of the plate resistors alter the output section as far as power distribution? Also, did you check &/or replace the 1.5k screen resistors?
What 1.5k screen resistors are you talking about? There are a lot of articles out there on Rob Robinette's page and Merlin Blencowe's page and others about the pros and cons of changing screen resistor values. The idea for me is to keep the screens more negative in relation to the plates to make overdriving the signal easier, for one, and better protection for the screens also.
I apologise, I got the tube nomenclature turned around. I was referring to the 1.5k grid resistors. Re the doubling up the screen resistors value, I can see how that would cause more breakup.
Cheers for the reply.
Great Fix.. Great Tone.... LOVE Super Reverbs but.. my BACK.. does not... ( never saw one with a master volume till this one )..
Is that 4 x 12" speakers? In the 80's for a while a friend lent me a Super reverb with 4-12s, I though it was called a quad reverb though.
4 10s, the quad reverb had 4 12s and the same wattage as a twin
You are so right about that it is so powerful that you have to hear one with the power valves hot but there is one other amplifier that is a fender that has a power tube on each knob a Equalizer that powerful it's rating is 185 RMS a blackface that blows the putty out of windows wow so heavy to carry your back might never be the same again
I don’t have any repair person that I can rely on in south east Michigan
What can I do ?
Have a ‘77 Super
4K is mostly overkill. A good HD image looks the same as 4K if you just back away from the screen three feet.
Hey man, I have an old Alamo Embassy I’d like to send out to ya. How do I get in touch with you?
My favorite amplifier however its shape makes it awkward to load for a gig if you are by yourself.
I know youtube pay is shit...but your amp repair vids are your aria.
Brad: Curious… what contact cleaner are you using?
I posted the above comment right before you mentioned the contact cleaner you’re using. 🤦♂️
Look closer; that WD-40 can is labeled "Contact Cleaner" lower on the label.
Sound good :) love old amp ! I got an old 1982 Roland jazz chorus 120 . I prefer the sound of My roland amp over any other amp i tried. And it s loud like hell 🤣
Another great video was always Brad I can't tell the difference between 1080P or 4K but that's just me you know what I find kind of weird the late or not really so late but the 86 or 87 tubes from Eastern Bloc hungry cuz that date that Soviet that Soviet hungry so how and why were they used in the states was that common back in that time at that period of my time I was out in the East Bay in San Francisco and I was playing drums professionally and I really wasn't playing guitar acoustic for writing stuff and I had a can I add an Ibanez Blazer at the time which was a piece of garbage to say the least that was my opinion of it and the crappy old amp tube amp so I never bothered to look into the back of so yeah I have no idea what was going on with tubes back then so I don't know if tubes from Sylvia hungry we're coming I don't think so to be honest because you could just get American tubes anyway thanks for your video as always this is Bob the blind bedroom guitarist believe it or notwhile setting up this new tablet that I had purchased as things got screwed up and it was a pain in the ass to change it once it was made and I will get back into the settings and whatnot and change it but it is what it is now and yeah this is again the flying bedroom guitarist so sincerely Bob the blind bedroom guitarist hope you're well bread
Ahhh! A geetologist geetar amp repair! Nice to see Brad; it's been a while! You gotta stop fixin em so well, you're doin yourself outta business! Lol!
That busted brown wire might have had sumthin to do do with the owner's problem, but maybe he just needed that footswitch ay?
They actually took down your latest video.
i thought you only needed the pedal to turn off the reverb and trem to my memory all my black and silver faces worked with out he footswith you just could turn the effects off
What's the song/riff at 27:00?
I'm just making stuff up.
Have you looked into Western Electric tubes there US made but JJ made in Slovakia are the best of best IMO.
Only shooting 1080? I usually watch in 720 because I'm too cheap to pay for better internet.
gee, now you have to lug that monster around. There is a reason that I would prefer a deluxe or a princeton and mic it. Fender amps are all cool though.
Now days, USA still make tubes? If yes, which manufactures?
Western Electric is the only USA tube maker I know of left.
@@TheGuitologistThanks a lot for the answer. Keep the good job!
👍👍
Brad, your channel and projects and teaching style are all exactly what I think makes for time well spent on the 21st Century version of the "boob tube".
But with that said there is one thing that is a "personal problem" I admit, but bro seriously, the goof version way you say TREMOLO makes me nuts!!!!
Now I think you're goofing saying it that way, but others I know who watch your channel all say you do it intentionally.
Can you set the record straight for us and please and tell us if you're kidding or not?
Thanks very much!
Dr. Frankenstein
Just created a monster
Now it’s on the loose
Scary …
People who replace vintage tubes that work just fine in a guitar amp with modern tubes drive me up a wall. You’re never gonna get anywhere near the quality of the vintage tubes. They’re just not used in enough things nowadays for them to invest in the r&d to make more high-quality tubes.
More spaghetti than an Italian restaurant.
It's the truest american sound, especially with the red knob, but I'm still a Marshall and no fx kind of guy. Namastè.
Told ya I’d get to it. Now teach me something damn it ….😂
Anyone who's ever dragged a Deluxe Twin Reverb or a similar Music Man 212 amp up and down stairs in venues or basements knows why these monsters were not as popular.
Splitting the head from the speakers made lugging them around easier on the back and easier to shoe horn them into the back seat of a two door car.
Most guitar players didn't own pickup trucks back then and SUV's with folding seats and hatchbacks hadn't been invented yet. You were lucky if one band member had a truck or van to help haul gear in. That's partly why small inclosed trailers caught on for bands and their replacements; those blood sucking DJ's that helped kill off weekend live entertainment.❤
Hey Brad, can you see any of my comments from 5 years ago? I was banned for some reason..... lol
isn't this what derek trucks uses?
