You might have a bit more difficulty filling in for this band, ……..’what time signature shall we use?’ …….’How bout all of them?’. These are some of the best musicians in Rock. The only reason they are not the most famous band in the world is that many people cannot cope with the incessant complexity. Most songs are like a degree level examination for the ears.

Welcome to the world of Dream Theater. Perhaps the most talent ever assembled in one band ever. You should watch them do that note for note live next time you react to them. It's an entirely different experience of "oh shit" moments watching them live. Anything off the "Breaking the 4th Wall" DVD is very good.

I never respond to such comment, but we need to make clear that dt with portnoy were WAY better not (only) because of his talent in drumming, but because of his talent in writing and composing. New dt is average, beforehand they made history (acos, sfam, sdoit, octavarium, 12 steps suite). I don't get over it, just don't like them anymore. Easy

I was a latecomer to the Dream Theater fan club. My first album (received as a gift) was Octavarium. After my first listen through, I immediately bought their entire catalog.
If you want to see them live, look for their "Octavarium" video from their "Score" tour, complete with orchestra! It will absolutely blow you away.
Their drummer, Mike Portnoy also drums with The Neal Morse Band (Christian Prog Rock, and Neal Morse was the singer for Spock's Beard, another great prog band). Check out their "So Far Gone" official video (part of their concept album "The Similitude of a Dream"). Great stuff all the way around.

This is a pretty hard tune, but for them, even this is tame. Dream Theater is full of highs and lows, different sounds, lots of arrangements with different time signatures, and different instruments going at the same time. These guys are pretty unreal.

The drummer Mike Portnoy has a bunch of drum cam videos of him playing songs, definitely recommend checking those out if you're a drum fan. Also recommend checking out The Dance of Eternity which is an instrumental with I believe 108 time signature changes. The drummer also has a short video going over the time signature changes on sheet music. It's insane

Welcome to Dream Theater, and this is an excellent gateway song that can show you how amazing their musicianship is without overwhelming the listener. You mind will be blown if you dig into their discography.
There is a live performance of this song from the Chaos in Motion DVD, which you can likely find somewhere on YT. It's funny you mention potentially wanting to see Dream Theater live, because the tour for their 15th studio album just kicked off today (Feburary 2nd). Depending on your location, you might still be able to snag a ticket.

First time in here, and what i liked is that you know about music, because as you're saying you play drums, and is the best way to enjoy DT for the first time and understand what they're doing. Panick Attack is a great song, but in Dream Theater's standard is not a Masterpiece, not saying is a bad song, indeed is a great song, but Dream Theater has a looooooot of songgs even better and trully materpieces, like The Dance of Eternity, Octavarium, Metropolis Pt. 1, The Count of Tuscany, The Glass Prison, A Change of Seasons, just a few that you should try to listen to. I wish you the best in your channel.

If you haven't already, listen to 'Metropolis 2000: Scenes from a Memory' from feont to back, however, before you do, look up the individuals in the band and their education, and then look up the meaning of that album. Then, keep in mind that that album, a definitive rock opera, was mostly conceived by Portnoy!

'Overwhelmed'... that's the word u can use to describe Dream Theater's music. And yes, there is a live version of 'Panic attack' and it's spectacular live... The drummer here, Mike Portnoy, was a huge disciple of Rush & Neil Peart... but he left the band in 2010. The current Dream Theater drummer is another spectacular drummer - Mike Mangini.
The core of Dream Theater got together in 1985 at Berkeley School of music - Mike Portnoy (drums) met John Myung (bass) & John Petrucci (guitar) and bonded over their love of Rush, Iron Maiden, Yes, etc... The band was called Majesty, and they began writing and demoing songs w/ Kevin Moore (keyboards) and Chris Collins (vocals)... They wanted to expand the progressive rock genre to incorporate heavier bands like Metallica & Megadeth... Majesty was signed in 1988, and Charlie Dominici (vocals) was recruited for their first album 'When dream & day unite'... However, the name 'Majesty' was taken... so the Portnoy's father suggested the name Dream Theater after a movie house. The debut album was released in 1989, but was not promoted. Dream Theater kept writing and rehearsing into 1991, searching for a new singer... Canadian vocalist James LaBrie joined the band and in 1992, they finally got a new record contract.
Dream Theater's 2nd album 'Images & words' was miles ahead of their under-funded 1st album... the single 'Pull me under' was released in 1992 to promote the album and was a hit on MTV - the album went gold (half million copies) in the US as Dream Theater toured the world for the first time into 1993... Recording the next album 'Awake' in 1994, keyboardist Kevin Moore left the band once the album was done. Derek Sherinian (keyboards) did the tour and joined Dream Theater, recording the epic EP 'A change of seasons' in 1995. The band's next album 'Falling into infinity' was delayed until 1997, and following the tour, Jordan Rudess (keyboards) was asked to join, replacing Sherinian.
'Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a memory' was the next Dream Theater album' in 1999; a concept record that extended the track 'Metropolis Pt. 1: the Miracle & the Sleeper' from 'Images & words' in 1992... the record was produced by Mike Portnoy & John Petrucci for the first time. Dream Theater felt creatively rejuvenated and released a double-CD in 2002 'Six degrees of inner turbulence'... which brought more metal influences into their prog rock sound... In 2003, the 'Train of thought' album explored the metal side of the band even further.
'Panic attack' was a track from the 2005 album 'Octavarium', which returned to the creative direction of 'Falling into infinity'.
Dream Theater found renewed commercial success in 2007 w/ the album 'Systematic chaos'... In 2009, the album 'Black clouds & silver linings' became a top 10 album on the US charts for the first time in their career... However, in 2010, Mike Portnoy opted to leave the band to explore other musical projects... Mike Mangini, who had taught at Berkeley school, joined Dream Theater. Their 2011 album 'A dramatic turn of events' also made the top 10 charts in the US... A self-titled 'Dream Theater' album was released in 2013 and the band was playing the biggest shows of their career going into 2014.
A concept double-CD 'The Astonishing' was released in 2016 and teamed up Dream Theater w/ classical composer David Campbell... Dream Theater has kept recording & touring, releasing the album 'Distance over time' in 2019... their latest album is 'A view from the top of the world' in 2021.
Former drummer Mike Portnoy has kept active in a number of projects - Transatlantic, OSI, Flying Colors, The Winery Dogs... he recently worked w/ former DT keyboardist Derek Sherinian in a new prog band Sons of Apollo.

There are many technical drummers out there, but Mike Portnoy plays with personality. You can hear it in his playing that he's having fun. He loves his job. He was a founding member of Dream Theater and they've been doing their thing since the late 80's. Portnoy left the band in 2010, but continues to play in some of my favorite acts: Sons of Apollo, The Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic, The Winery Dogs and Flying Colors. Now in his mid-50's, he's often more laid back in his playing (laid back being a relative term), but he still reaches into his bag of tricks and comes up with cool drum parts. I hope you get to check out his catalog.

Chod, you just hit the tip of the iceberg with this band. All members went to the Berkeley school of Music except for the keyboardist Jordan Ruddess. He attended the Juilliard school of Music and was accepted there at 9 years old. 2nd grade! Each member is a Master at their craft. And Mike Portnoy, what else can you say? Probably the greatest living drummer IMO. My fav. Album by them is Train of thought. Dance of Eternity is one of their more complicated pieces and a great one. Keep this in mind, if you watch the live version? It’ll more than likely be Mike Mangini on drums and not Mike Portnoy. As he left the band some 8-9 years ago.

Welcome to the DT rabbit hole! My favorite prog rock band. The greatest album I have ever heard in my life without a doubt is Metropolis Pt. 2 Scenes From A Memory. My favorite drummer of all time, Mike Portnoy. He's bad!

Except for Home.. I don’t think that’s a good album to listen to one song at a time. It’s kind of an all or nothing deal lol

Great reaction! You might want to listen to Octavarium, the title track of the same album Panic Attack is on. Or listen to Metropolis, pt 1, or A Change of Seasons, or The Count of Tuscany, or Illumination Theory, or…gosh I can go on :). Keep up the good work! 👍🏻

Great suggestion. This sounds like some music I use to listen to at the turn of this century, but I am having a hard time finding information on them, such as, where are they from, when was this release and more. My searches keep bringing up anxiety panic attacks. My searching skills are off today.

Search for Octavarium instead, that’s the album this song is from.

The commenters will rightfully talk up the abilities of the original drummer, Mike Portnoy. But, as a drummer, you should also check out how the current drummer, Mike Mangini, set up a balanced Left-Right drum kit. It’s a unique layout & performance style. He taught at Berkeley before joining DT.

Great band the keyboard and guitar play off each other harmony’s and solos sometimes the keys sound like a guitar and then the drums I believe this was mike portnoy who has been on the cover of modern drummer several times one of the best progressive metal bands there is and you can’t forget the bass and vocals they are the complete package

If you want a extra long reaction with this band, do their song "A Change of Seasons"! Awesome song where every member of the band has a solo and the song has an insane amount of transitions!

The complexity of Dream Theater mirrors the complexity of life. It's ok to feel happy and sad at the same time. It's the beauty of the experience. It is truly art.

I believe you weren't counting correctly! The song is actually in the standard 4/4 time signature. I believe you are confused because the tune intertwines the structure and beat, where the 2 and 4 aren't noticeable.

    Yes. Here we go.
For me they are the inventors or originators of what I call 90s Neo Prog Metal.
Everytime I listen to Tool I hear how influenced they are by Dream Theater.
Sure, they are not a copy and they took it to an other level...but the roots...

A nice predictable slow song... 🙂Yeah, there are bands, and then there´s Dream Theater. If you see music in color, and you like to see colors...they will give you them! Great reaction man! Try "Barstool warrior" - I promise you, You will not be disappointed! 🙂

Welcome to the amazing world of Dream Theater, undisputed kings of Prog Metal. Can't say enough about these guys, brilliant in every way. Recommend the "Instrumedley" from the "Live at Budokan" Live DVD from 2004 with original drummer Mike Portnoy who was the drummer in "Panic Attack" th-cam.com/video/aqCkihctr0w/w-d-xo.html Enjoy the journey, cheers
