How to Install Apps Directly to an SD Card on an Android Device
1. To Force Install Apps to SD Card, We need to Turn on Developer Options First.
2. To Do that, Go to Settings.
3. Tap on “About Phone”.
4. If You Are Using Mi Phone, Tap 7 Times on MIUI Version.
5. If You Are Using Other Phones, Tap 7 Times on Build Number.
6. After the Seventh Tap, a Message Will Appear Telling You That "You Are Now a Developer!
7. Now, Go Back to the “Settings Page”.
8. Scroll Down, and Tap on Additional Settings.
9. If You Scroll Down to Bottom of the Page. You Can See Developer Options.
10. Tap on Developer Options.
11. Scroll Down to “Apps” Section.
12. Toggle the Button Next to “Force Allow Apps to Write on External Storage” to Turn in On.

yeah, no deal. still trying to go on my Internal storage. If only they had an app directory menu that shows when you're about to install an app asking what storage option do you want the app installed to.

Thank you! This worked for me on my Samsung S7 Edge. Important note: after I turned on developer mode and force allowed apps to be on external storage, apps would still download to my internal storage by default. HOWEVER, I finally had the option to change the storage option by going to "settings" -> "app" -> "example app name" -> and then CHANGE the storage used to SD Card. I didn't have this option before. Hope this helps someone out there!

2 years after posting this and it's still paying dividends for people. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! My tablet had literally nothing but 1 game installed and I couldn't update it (I didn't even have pics/videos on the tablet). The update was 11mb. The game claimed it needed 243mb free to do the 11mb update. I have 2.43GB free, plus 60gb on the external. I still couldn't update!!! Now I can. I freakin' love you man.
Finally, instructions to "INSTALL apps to SD card!!" Even though I searched that in Google, TH-cam etc., the results would only show how to MOVE your apps after they are installed! Thank you for the clear instructions how to do that! I also know that their is an option to FORMAT your SD card as "internal" storage. I haven't chosen to do that yet. Thanks again! :-)

I practiced the same but apps directly installed on internal storage instead of memory card, I double check developer is enabled or not but that is enabled too..

Ok I get it, what this option does (at least for me) is that all the apps are still gonna be installed in the internal storage, the thing is that you have to go to settings, apps, and choose the app you want to change to your external storage.
And how do you do that?

Thank you for making this very concise tutorial... On my last phone I started exploring the very thing you're talking about and apparently activated it never realizing that it was not initially activated..
On my Ulefone Armor 9e the menu was slightly different from what you described but your description was so concise that it allowed me to persist through the slightly different menu structure and activate the ability to place my apps on the SD card... It's videos like yours that really help !!!

Thanks,..., you kept it brief, concise without being verbose and long-winded. Only thing left to add is whether to toggle off developer option afterwards and/or the device will auto- troggle off on reboot.

Yes I managed to find a way to do this. However as my Poco M3 is on MiUI Global 12.0, Android 11, I noticed as soon as developer option is disabled, the "Force Apps to use SD card" or words to that effect gets greyed out again and on closer look at the screen, it looks like it is disabled again. I tried the trick of leaving developer option enabled while re-installing WhatsApp, but I have my doubts really. I have seen blogs elsewhere that because microSD storage is less stable than phone storage, the manufacturers have taken the simple option.

i can't get developer mode on my phone for some reason, tapping on the build number even spamming on it doesnt do anything
Edit: i got to developer mode in the application settings but i only have 3 options: Usb debug, keep screen active and allow installing apps from external places
Thank you for this insightful information. I was able to move 51 apps that was locked. I did not want to ROOT my Samsung Galaxy. I did not have the MIUI option, so the BUILD option worked like a charm. It still installs directly to the phone though, but as long as I can move them to the external sd, it's not a big deal. Only app that still can not be moved is TH-cam.

So did this. Went into apps to try to move the apps I needed to move to free up space and it still didn't give me the option to move any of them.
This is to directly install apps to an SD card, not move already existing ones
I tried to switch the default storage from SD back to INTERNAL, then tried to switch options: "force allows applications on the external" but it still acts the same (when I move the slider to the right, it returns left to the OFF state).
is there a solution?

OMG THANKYOUSOMUCH! I have a basic 32gb storage and I have a 128gb sd card inserted, but only certain apps are able to be moved, so I was only using 27gb of the 128gb card and my phone would constantly say "storage nearly full" I just followed your steps and hopefully this will work!

@@rolltideroll8458 somewhat. Not what I imagined, I would still have to install the app to my phone and then I could go into settings, apps, choose the app and then move it from phone to SD card. I had to move each one, but not all apps were able to be moved. It helped but was still a hassle. I waited about 6 months then finally got a new phone with more storage.

I tried this on my samsung galaxy. It works. The game app that normally cant be put in sd got transferred. But my problem is the app data. I tried moving the folders manually to sd card but the problem is the app doesnt read them fron the sd and requires me to download data files again. Its a game app that uses 2gb of space which only get bigger and bigger.

Unfortunately no. The game doesn't support sd cards. I did the most obvious thing which is getting a new phone.

i did it, its work for appearing the devepoler and blah blah,but if you install an app its not directly to the sd card and if the developer is ON your Gcash account is not working and you didn't open it. Im sorry but base on my experience that's true and thank you for the video.

“Moving” an app to an SD card is one of the bad ideas of the century.
It causes the card to fail a lot faster than it normally would. (apps have to write their current status any time it changes which, for a game like that, is constantly. SD card are rated in number of writes. You can eat an SD card in 100 hours like that.)
Apps are “moved” in small pieces, and links are left to the pieces in internal storage. If a piece is the size of a link, no storage is saved.
When (not if) the SD card goes, you can’t reinstall the app, because it’s listed as being installed. You can’t uninstall it because portions of it aren’t accessible. So your only option is a factory reset. You lose everything.
Heey, I was so happy when I succeeded doing this, and it worked.. I installed few apps. But then for the last app it told me again that there is no, more free space on my phone, even tho my ad card is empty and I checked if the option is still on and it is.. Do you have any idea why is that?? Thank you so much in advence

I didn't have the 'Force the app to download on the external drive' itself. I have a Samsung tablet and I could follow the steps until tuning it to developer mode, only.

sorry i'm a samsung user and the first steps worked but, there wasn't any option on the developer thing in where you cam directly put the apps that you install inside the sd card.

You need to specify phone model. All android phones don’t navigate the same.
