  • Modern cars are all about minimal emissions, maximum fuel economy and all kinds of electronics to make sure you save fuel. Question is, can my modern Fiat TwinAir engine REALLY achieve its claimed 67MPG consumption figure? To find out, it’s time for another Miller Corner fuel economy challenge!

    My 2001 fiat pinto 1.2 16v cvt , manages 62 mpg on a journey cruising at 60 mph , the fiat pinto is an excellent car , even after 20+ years, well made and no corrosion yet 10 happy years with my punto , many more yet with it , best car I ever had ,

    It's always going to be difficult to match claimed mpg as the manufacturer does it in perfect conditions in a sealed room under test conditions..... Great video there though Joe

    The vehicle MPG figs are compiled by using a complicated methodology involving unburnt fuel through the exhaust etc and NOT by driving a car at for example a steady 56mph. It was the only "fair" calculation that all manufacturers agreed with when it was instigated and was flawed from the outset. I take them all with a pinch of salt

    Thw twinair engine it was originally designed for the 500.and it's a masterpiece witch it will become a classic.i get on a highway, around 100/110km about 4,5l/100km and that to mee is outstanding!with a petrol tank of 35l it gives me +-750km of autonomy.even driving true the Ardennes up and down hill I get 5,1l/100km!the punto is just too big and sucks all the fun out of it.the thing with this engine is that it is to dam fun to drive it economic like.this is a car that puts a smile in your face when you put the foot down but you have to forget about fuel efficiency.you don't buy this car for that specially if you have experience with motorbikes.the twin engine is like driving a bike and if you know how it is the best little car you can buy,aside the 500abarth witch is my dream.i have done trips to Spain,1300km with no more than 2 tank's so I don't care what people say about this engine,as I already sed,it is a masterpiece as it was 60 years ago with the first 500s that, despite what all the people say about Italian cars,still driving around.oh and another thing,nothing beats the Italian style,my 500 is almost 10years old and people still ask me if it is a brand new car.you don't get that with the Germans 😅

    39mpg is shocking! Especially considering that you were faffing about with every single ECO measure. Good on you for doing that, nice one.

    You didn't do it properly, you have to go at least 100 miles to get any relevant result. Best thing to do is to fill it up and drive it until it's almost empty, then fill it up again and see the results. I guarantee it would be much different.

      I am also a 1.1 Seicento SX ( 1yr ) and Punto GP Evo 1.4 ( 3yrs ) owner, so Hub Nut and young Mr Corner are very enjoyable channels to follow, although Mr Seabrook refers too Sei as a melted Cinq 😲, 😂,
      .Punto always indicates 45+ and I"m sure Sei must easily match or better that, never actually calculated it though 👍

      I refer to my Seicento as "the go cart" as it handles much like one and reminds me of my old '73 mini but believe it or not quieter. Incidentally the pointless rear seats spend more time folded down as this creates an extraordinary amount of space for such a tiny car

    Interestingly my vxr is spot on in terms of accuracy i know this because i once put exactly 1 gallon in the very second the fuel light came on (right place right time) and the trip was telling me 44.1 mpg. After exactly 44 miles the fuel light came on exactly where predicted!

    not efficient is one thing, parts are getting more expensive is another. maybe it takes more time to keep an older car running, if you can do it yourself it is cheaper and of course fixing smal things is better for the environment than building an entire new car..
    just my 2 cents..
    anyhow i think that punto is quit noisy.. i have to put my laptop on max to hear what you are saying.

    A modern car that is 30% heavier, at least, 10% bigger, would need an engine that is 40% more efficient from 90's cars, which were around 25% thermal ecfficiency. That means that todays engines should be 37% efficient, to have the same economy, but this should be 20% better?? That is only possible with modern big Diesel engines that can reach 45-49% thermal efficiency, so obviously, The laws of the universe are against such milage claims. Small cars are the key, and just to recap: I get 4L/100km allround in my Seicento everytime. 4.4L/100km Hiway, 5L/100km city and 3.4L/100km extra urban. (I drive carefully). Actually, if I go completely nuts and hypermile, keeping speeds between 50-65 km/h, using every trick in the book, like stop and go (with the key) and rolling to stops every time making other motorists go nuts, I can average 2.4L/100km, which is kind of mind blowing. The reason, besides skinny hard pumped tires and PFTE grease in the wheel bearings, are that the old FIRE SPI engines go into lean burn mode if they are not loaded to hard and driven at a constant speed. Indicated by the evap selenoid being energised, which I can monitor with a DIY LED on the dash.

    My 2.0 Turbo Cooper S does 37mpg quite happily so that, to me, is woeful. However the way to do eco driving is lift and coast miles down the road and using plenty of engine braking. I also agree it is mind numbingly boring and stressful to drive economically

    'Ive the 'Fiat 500 twin air' i know the economy figures aren't what the manufacturer says they should be, but your probably getting fuel leakage from the overflow if your filling the system up to the brim!
    The filler tube holds about a litre!

  • @pdtech4524
    @pdtech4524 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In my experience with the little twinair engine, the only way you'll achieve 67mpg is if you disconnect the fuel supply to the engine and make holes underneath to fit your feet through and push yourself along! ⚠️😯😁
    Or you find a long downhill mountain pass to test mpg on, you'll probably beat the 67mpg figure. ⚠️😁
    Best I got on a long run in my Fiat Panda 4x4 0.9 twinair is an indicated 54mpg. But that has all the extra 4x4 drivetrain which saps power and efficiency!
    Expect to achieve mid 40s mpg on average but a brisk driving style can easily get those numbers down to mid 30s😯⚠️😊😁
    Also the gear indicator is very optimistic, it sometimes tells you to change up a gear when it reaches 2k revs going up hill, below 2k there isn't much grunt!
    Eco mode is pointless because you use a heavier throttle to get anywhere! In my opinion it's like a FUN on/off button. ⚠️😁

  • @OdykKayne
    @OdykKayne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Huh! Surprising it did so poorly....then again, for how great that engine is, it's still a lot of weight for a little 2-cylinder to pull around. The stock Seicento's engine isn't THAT much bigger, though more cylinders, but it's got less weight to haul around...?
    On average from full tank to empty, driving fairly normally (but overly eco-y) I usually get around 6.5 to 7L/100km in my '09 Hyundai Accent hatch with a 5-spd and a 1.6L 4-cyl. Not too shabby I've always thought! The best I ever did driving as eco-friendly as I could just to see how I could do netted me about 6L/100km....probably the best I could ever do with it, haha!
    Trust me, I don't drive like an eco warrior either (as I know you don't :P), but have you ever heard of Fuelly.com? Nice website to enter in and track your fuel economy/fuel costs, etc. over time and keep a log of you services and maintenance - also nice to look up real-world fuel economy figures from other users on potential cars you are interested in buying if you're into that sort of thing! Here's the page for my car: www.fuelly.com/car/hyundai/accent/2009/darkstrike/194627

      Yup, agreed! I don't hypermile everywhere like one of Jeremy Clarkson's so-called 'eco-mentalists', but I do track my usage to give me an idea how much I am spending. Every once and awhile, though, it's a fun 'game' to play with yourself....see how far you can stretch one tank of fuel! :)

    Ha....I can hit over 45mpg in a 3ltr twin turbo 335d. Its got 286bhp and 580nm. Remapped it will have 350 and 700.... and from reports it should do a few mpg more once tuned. Maybe even 50 mpg on a run if driven sensibly! Once used less fuel in an e34 535i on a (fast) run over the Scottish Highlands than my friend in an e30 318i.

    siXth, not siCKth FFS man! I have a fiat 500s 1.2 8v, I get real world mpg 50 mixed urban and dual carriageway dash says 56.9mpg. Twin air has so much hype about mpg but never lives up to it IME. Shame really. I reckon if you do just did 50 mph on the flat in a straight line with over inflated tyres you might get the claimed figure. Otherwise sadly no.

    The biggest achievement of the twinair engine has been to discredit official fuel economy figures.
    However, it is unfair to compare cars so different in weight, like pitting Ghandi against Mike Tyson.
    Instead compare the fiat 500 1.2 8v with the multiair engine in real world driving.
