  • I started my onions from seed in January and got them transplanted into the garden last week almost a month earlier than last year.

    Thanks for the video. I got my seeds from Bakers Creek for the first time this year and am thoroughly impressed. I may have had 2-3 seeds out of several varieties that didn’t germinate. Very healthy and unique seeds. I’ll never get my seeds from anywhere else.

      Yep I've had good luck with their onion seeds and they send so many too. Onion seeds do deteriorate quickly though so the germination will be much less each year. I usually buy new seeds every couple of years.

    They pull apart easy. Thanks for sharing that. I have bunches of onions in 4” pots. Mine are smaller then yours. I wondered how I would be able to separate them. Now I know. 👍🏻👩🏻‍🌾

      Luckily they have strong roots but even if they do break, they grow back pretty quickly. :)

    like all your others, great video and good information. thank you.
    i've grown this very variety (among others) but only once had any luck growing indoors. my onions seem to do great at first and then after 2-3 inches tall all die out. no problems with other plants.

    • @gapey

      Weird. I've never had a problem with them dying out. Last year was my worst year for onion starts, they just didn't grow very quickly and were not as thick stemmed as usual but they ended up turning out fine and got a good harvest out of them.

    The onions started indoors need to be fertilised with liquid high nitrogen fertiliser about once every week. The reason for this is, the onion transplants will need maximum leaf production before they can start bulbing when set outside. Also care should be taken to never give your onion seedlings more than 6 hours of sunlight (4 - 5 hours is better), before they are planted in the field. If you give them more than 6 hours of light (sunlight or growlight) when they are still in seedling trays, they get confused and start to bulb in the seedling trays.

    • @gapey
      @gapey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always give my onion seedlings as much light as all my other garden starts and haven't had any problem with getting large bulbs. Maybe because I keep them so crowded in the pot they don't have room to get bulbs if they wanted to.

    • @yuppiecruncher
      @yuppiecruncher ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Arun Kumar This is probably more important for short day varieties. I give my long day onions 10-12 hours. They bulb at 14+ hours

    • @gapey
      @gapey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yuppiecruncher Interesting. My long days have never bulbed prematurely in 16 hours of light.

    • @gapey
      @gapey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. Onions really don't need that much depth. Carrots, depending on the variety might need more depth but I haven't had any issues with the depth of the varieties I've grown.

Can I safely and carefully dig up and move these onions to my new garden where I'm moving to? I'm concerned if they will bolt prematurely or not produce a bulb. Thanks!

    • @gapey
      @gapey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really don't use fertilizer when transplanting onions but for the seedlings I usually use a liquid fish and seaweed fertilizer and just give them a small dose every couple weeks or so while they're growing. I started fertilizing once they got about 3-4" tall.

    @sharonbey525 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for this video. When do you start cutting onions to strengthen them before transplanting? Mine are getting too tall yet they just germinated. Again, how long do onions take to germinate? When is the best time to transplant, at how old?

    • @gapey
      @gapey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Once they start falling over a bit is usually when I trim them. If yours are already germinated then you know how long it takes right? It depends on a lot of things like how deep you plant them and the soil temperature. Mine usually took about a week on a heat mat. They can really be transplanted any time you want. You could direct sow them right in the ground if you wanted to. I would probably wait until after the last frost date but they are cold hardy so you don't even have to do that they will just grow slower until it warms up.

  • @safiyyab
