I lived in the Haight from '89-'93. Actually, at 2:14 you can see my old building. 537 Shrader St. Its behind that rather colorful little hut with the sign "Listen to this wall". The hut actually used to be a Fotomat hut. Take a guess how much my rent was for the two bedroom that I shared with a roomate? $650!! That Whole foods used to be a regular super market. And Amoeba records was a Bowling Alley. They used to have a night called "Rock n Bowl" which my band played at. You could bowl and hear a live band at the Same time! Also had my 25th birthday at Ploy 2! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!
..press pause @ 6:51, in 1968, I lived in the 2nd story apartment (above the red motorbike)...used to sit on the window ledge & drop 'torpedo joints' on groovy victims! I remember waking up early, looking out my window, & watch the fog dissipate as the sun came up, "TODAY" by Jefferson Airplane playing gently in the background...it was a fun/joyous time that didn't last but while it did....yeah...!
My Aunt used to live on Masonic Street. I spent part of the summer there in 1967. On June 16, 17, and 18, we went down to Monterey to attend the pop festival there. I was only 12 years old at the time. I remember scaring the crap out of my aunt when I was talking to someone that everyone called "unlucky Chucky" No one ever heard of him back then. Now he's a household name. He was Charles Manson. According to my aunt, he was the only one there that ever gave all the hippies the heebeegeebees. He seemed nice to me at the time, but I was only 12 too. Young, kinda dumb for my age and very naive. I owe my life to the hippies of that day back then. They saved my life more than once for which I'm forever grateful for to this day.
I have been binge watching all of ur San Francisco videos!! I am gonna be a student at university of San Francisco this fall AND I AM LIVING FOR ALL OF THESE VIDEOS
Haha thank you, Jared!! Wishing you all the best at USF! Such a great choice school. I've got more SF videos saved up, just lacking the time to edit them all.
I was just there two weeks ago so al, the same stuff is in the shop windows . The free clinic is still there . It’s still going strong since the 60s . There is a mural on the wall inside I wanted to get a photo with . One guy who worked there was going to let us see it but the girl at the front desk would have none of it . She didn’t even know what I was talking about until I pointed out a photo of it on a poster in the lobby of the place . Oh well . I tried .
There was a great breakfast place on Haight called All You Knead and the Cafe Echo - no idea if they're still there; there was a cool Ethiopian restaurant there too.
This was so well-done. I was there, back in 2006 for Summer Music Festivals. ( as a Musician ) Something about the: vibe, history & hippie culture is so intriguing. Enjoyed your video. oNe Love from NYC.
Today, 10/16/18 I visited The Haight. Ate lunch at the Citrus Club. Then ice cream at the Ben and Jerry’s (Phish food!). Then a few pictures at the Grateful Dead House on Ashbury Street. It was a fun couple of hours
I live in Cole Valley and often walk up there for the restaurants. In the 60s Magnolia was Magnolia Thunderpussy's bakery, known for "naughty" deserts. They have one of her menus in Love On Haight. That McDonalds was a hellhole that they had to close down because it was a haven for drug dealers.
Lauren, great video. Just came back from SF on vacation. Spent 6 days there. Did and saw everything. My wife got her first tattoo at that shop in the Haight just behind the Tie-Dye store. I chose San Francisco because I saw your videos about the area. We had a great time. Thank you for posting... keep it up.
So glad you got to explore SF! I love this city :) Congrats to your wife on her first tattoo - what an awesome spot to get one. Thanks for the kind words about my content - it means a lot!!
I remember seeing what looked like a PSA (public service announcement) that ran in the early 70's on TV. It was about Haight Ashbury and it was narrated by Jack Webb (Dragnet). It was as if they were talking about the poor conditions in a third world country. The poverty and suffering kids, in the wake of the "Summer of Love" gone sour.
I have been to SF several times. I am blind and go to Guide Dogs For The Blind in San Rafael going back to 1998. The school does several trips in to town during class sessions. I live in London,Ontario,Canada :-). LOVE SAN FRAN! -RN
I was at Haight in 2008 for the Outside Lands concert. I hadn’t been back since the late 60’s and, from the short time we were there, would have to agree with your assessment of the current homeless situation. It was sad to me. Many of the kids were begging and just being rude. I almost wished I hadn’t gone back, but chose to hold on to the memories from so many years ago instead. 😊 ✌️
I'll be there at the end of the month for a 3 day conference & am glad I found your videos! I'm still a bit lost on how the best form of transportation will be to get from point A to point B but I'm sure a good map will help. Is there any good apps that are worth downloading for a tourist? I've been bing watching your videos & taking notes of places to go & things to eat! Thanks for the knowledge & love your video style!
Hi there, I hope you enjoy your time in SF! I'm guessing you're already here and figured out how to get around. But for others seeing this, my personal fave is just pairing BART and MUNI with walking. I despise SF buses, and will opt for a Lyft ride if absolutely necessary.
Lauren Without Fear , Hi Lauren!, Yes, I'm here & enjoying the city! Since today is my last day & still haven't found enough time to do all the typical tourist things, I've narrowed it down to a few & will be doing the Uber thing to get from to the places I still want to see. Now that I have experienced a few different forms of transportation, I can understand why you prefer one over the other. .. I did find a pork bun & Sam Wo's, both of which were awesome!.. Thank you so much for your info in & around San Francisco & I'm looking forward to more!. Stay safe!
Overall you did a great job on this video. Only thing is Magnolia is’nt an old Hippie hangout. It used to be a pharmacy. Its probably been a beer pub atound 20 years. Good beer good food.
McDonald's no good. Once burger King got a promotion very nice. And I was doing my three meals a day, even repeating. I just got 10 kg in a month, and I never recovered next 15 years. Just lost recently.
I lived on hippie life style during 30 years of my life. I always worked. But now I nearly to become a beggar because of that lifestyle, I didn't finish my degree, unemployed, I am 58 years old already, too good hearted ... Not because I wanted I will become a beggar, I was a very hard worker (factory jobs). 7 years ago I had a nice full time job in England, I left because I couldn't stand those aggressive Polish workers...
The reason MC Donald's isn't there no more the franchise owner couldn't pay this mandatory minimum wage that was put into law by California Law Makers and other shops have closed due to higher taxes. as well.
@@seenaroundboston2302 Oh yes it even bigger corporations had to move out of California because of higher taxes and if a franchise owner for McDonald's could pay 15 dollars per hour they would need non-stop action for 8 hrs a day or more and that's what Socialists Communist Governments do to put you out of business.
Wow...the most superficial view of the Haight...so disconnected. But I get that they were babies 30 years after so it's not their fault. Points for a pretty good historical research and blurb. I lived in the Haight in the 80s and although the commercialization (yuppification) of the neighborhood was happening there were yet many elements from the original Haight revolution and also the subsequent 70s culture including the gay Renaissance. In short still magic. I spent my days working as a bike messenger in the financial district and evenings (as a an 18 year old dead-head from the East coast) busking the classics to make money for a Chibela Burrito and in the late night dosing heavily on acid with my friends and taking long faerie filled adventures into the depths of the mystical Golden Gate Park starting with a small ceremony in the panhandle and and ending up at what we called the Grok tree where universes and past life identities melded to teach us how to live Now.
Some ppl were born there and know no other place to call home. The community isn't ur problem, especially when you cannot afford to live there which is probably the reason ppl don't have places to live. Anyehoot Good content. Enjoy the land bcuz the ppl aren't ur problem until u start judging them and putting negative stuff out there. .
Let's talk WORK. It's funny we're told we can be whatever we want when we're growing up but when we reach that certain age, we find everything we have been taught is all bullshit and we are doing things we never imagined for money. Including working for others who treat us like garbage and expect too much from us. Even if we get sick or seriously injured, they still expect us to come in and work to full capacity or they just fire us to avoid insurance payouts. Then when you can't work anymore due to illness, disability or serious injury, you're frowned upon and considered lazy or a piece of crap. I wish some of these people who feel this way would have something happen to them so they know what it feels like. The problem with people is this, We give up and settle. We are told we have to go to school, work, get married and have kids because it's what you do. If not you're not normal. It's just a way to keep us in line and to behave, do as you're told or else. Don't ask questions just shut up about it. Instead of people rising up and changing things so they can be whatever they want. You might have those who are lucky enough to meet, know someone or have a family member pulling strings but not all of us have this opportunity.
...I got news for this little girl...the height of hippie days and Haight-Ashbury was at least 4 years beyond what she is saying....and had nothing to do with the coming and goings of 'celebrities'....

outstanding upload Lauren Without Fear. I shattered that thumbs up on your video. Always keep up the high quality work.
The tripiest, hippiest place on Earth. Most likely turned from hippies to yippies, to yuppies with puppies.
San FRANCISCO MASTER GUNNY
This video was very helpful. Thank you.

Great history lesson on a cool place. Can’t wait to go back. Enjoy vacation, mountain and beach adventures are the best kind!
Glad you enjoyed! Agreed :)

I’m going to San Francisco in 4 weeks! I planned this rather spontaneously and your videos have helped so much and have made me so excited!
I'm so glad!! Enjoy :)

My dream was to walk in these streets, and posing at the signals.
Born and raised in sf, hadnt been to the haight in about five years, and cant believe the mcdonalds is gone lol
Wonderful video as always Lauren. Quite knowledge filled ☺️👍
Groovy Mama ✌️ Peace ... Love ... Happiness ☺️
I have a 35 y/o tie dye shirt that my uncle made there and mailed out from there. He's still living there
When I was in San Francisco in December I walked from Haight-Asbury to the Tenderloin and got some really strong pure raw dope

tjholmes67 Best form of transportation is Uber.
tjholmes67 Try to eat at Tadich Grill and order the Ciopinno and a martini. That dish is an original.

Do you still use your Sony a5100?
CARLOS VAZQUEZ ARGENTINA LOVE
Great video. I had a beer in the Magnolia earlier.
Awesome!! I hope you enjoyed yourself
Lauren Without Fear I certainly did. Back to the UK on Friday but taking some great memories with me.
ednaplate me too . We sat outside on the corner .
Just returned from H-A. The beer in the Magnolia was delicious though the pub itself was rather quiet.🤔
Nice job!
But what's the acid like and personally i would probably only go just cause of r.crumb.
Overall you did a great job on this video. Only thing is Magnolia is’nt an old Hippie hangout. It used to be a pharmacy. Its probably been a beer pub atound 20 years. Good beer good food.
From this✌to this$$$$ time marches on,
It would be cool if you did a thrift shop adventure video or what college kids can do in sf
Good call! I love thrift adventures!
In summary:
_I used to love hate but now I hate hate_
Me too
SFは、とても面白い街でした。新しい物と古い伝統的な物が同居していてチャイナタウンも良い感じでした。
I don't believe anyone is homeless by choice. Or at least not the majority of people
only eight dollars for a cup of coffee
Why is it now a real expensive area, ?
I’m all for hippie culture to but geeez hanging out on the streets asking for money nooo.. nope not my cup of tea ☕️
Nice vlog
Oh shit they shut down that Mc Donalds?! Omg. I moved out of sf in june so I didn't knooooow D:
Dang. Now where are the heroin addicts going to get their sweet-tea-with-74-packets-of-sugar fix.
The city bought out McDonald's with plans to raise an apt building of affordable housing on that land.
McDonald's no good. Once burger King got a promotion very nice. And I was doing my three meals a day, even repeating. I just got 10 kg in a month, and I never recovered next 15 years. Just lost recently.
The McDonald's is gone! I use to go there on my lunch breaks years ago...

You should do a video on the Castro.
Claims to love hippie culture, hates on the hippies who's culture was ruined by society's bullshit.
I love you ❤️

I would be the only metalhead in San Francisco
Charles Manson was there in 67
Your assumption is correct. I live on Haight st, and it is mostly people that are capable of working, asking for help. It's by design for them.
You are so gorgeous!
...I got news for this little girl...the height of hippie days and Haight-Ashbury was at least 4 years beyond what she is saying....and had nothing to do with the coming and goings of 'celebrities'....
pleae use stabaliser plugin on your vids.
Thank you for all the info and visuals ,dont mind the bums there is always going to be bums nobody forces you to feed them.
Call it the Hashbury.. dont say "Haight" Go to hippie hill and smoke a few joints!
Everything is overpriced!
It was nicer there eleven years ago. Not all hippies are leftist, some are right-wing.
Disgusting
Your 360 was horrible.
