    Learn how to play solo from the track 'Disciples of hell' from Yngwie's second studio album 'Marching Out' (1985). This solo has loads of very interesting arpeggio ideas as well as very cool licks combining picking with legato runs. We'll go through this solo phrase by phrase , eventually connecting licks into small sections of the solo so you can keep track how they work together.
    Guitar is tuned to E flat (Eb) just like in the original recording.

    You are an extraordinary guitarist for being able to do tutorials like this. But I cannot help but think the most creative work for YJM stays in the 80's. Marching Out for riffs and solos has to be his best work.

    I remember when Malmsteen first came out with this stuff, there was no TH-cam, it seemed like nobody in the world would ever be able to play his solos, just impossible. Now things are so different, perfect renditions on TH-cam to watch.

      Hey man, I get what you're saying, I remember as a teen trying to learn Kirk Hammett's solos from a cassette player ( I was fascinated with his playing at the time), you could considered yourself lucky if you got your hands on a video tape of a live show praying there's a shot of him playing lick you couldn't figure out so you can maybe get a little closer to figuring out what the hell he was playing, tabs were pretty much useless . Today, thousand different results of any guitar solo, lessons, tutorials you can imagine, served on a silver platter .But on the other hand, there is a lot to appreciate in learning by ear, something any musician should practice

    Just a note if you want to play it more like Yngwie does. First he uses a different fingering on the ascending E minor arpeggio, so instead 10 on the A string he plays 5 on the D string. Same notes but it can change the pick attack sound.
    On the descending part of the arpeggio Yngwie uses some form of alternate picking (yes that is weird but he does that on 5 string arpeggios) and that first 9 on G string is really hard to hear but it sounds like a different note. Anyway he ends that arpeggio by playing 9 on the D string followed by 9 on the G string, so that last 10 on the A string in the tab should instead be a 9 on the G string. That last correct note makes a big difference in my opinion.

      Thanks Pablo! Well, for recording I use Guitar rig 5 ( psychedelay, spring reverb, custum eq, screamer, Citrus amplifier , control room, control room pro are components I use in my preset) I also sometimes put an analog Blackstar ht-dist pedal in front of it to dirty the signal a little bit.
      Playing without any effects can be beneficial because that way it's only you and your guitar, I often practice my guitar un plugged so you can really tell how well you mastered certain things, or how good are your dynamics and so on...So there is no given rule, it just depends what you wanna accomplish, at the end of the day effects are just tools - nothing more, the tone is in your hands, and that's just the truth ! Keep rocking my friend!

    The harmonic notes at the beginning of the solo, the 5th fret harmonic on the D string should be a fifth fret harmonic on the high E string 1:18... The harmonic doesn't come out clear in the recording but I'm certain that is the note he is hitting. It's played all on the high 3 strings .

    Hello really good lesson (learning the solo at the moment following your tutorial in order to iron-down some passages)!
    Just one question: at 13:02 circa, it is not easier to perform 12-11-10 /12-11-9 (on B and G strings) instead of moving on 3 strings? doing 12-11/14-12-11/14 (on B,G,D strings)?

    • @chasingfrets
      @chasingfrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Valerio, I'm glad you like the lesson, if you find it easier to play that lick in that position that's completely OK, the reason I played it like that is because that way your hand stays in just one position so it made sense to me, but again if it feels more comfortable for you to get the notes out by playing it like you suggested it then go for it. The thing is, guitar players are different, and some players find it easier to play certain licks the certain way and that' OK the only things that counts is that you can play the lick so that it sounds as it should and that it doesn't get in a way of the next lick that follows in terms of position shift ( with some licks you have to think ahead how well does it connect with the next phrase in terms of fingering ). Cheers!

    • @chasingfrets
      @chasingfrets  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No I don't, but bare in mind that with these pedal note licks (where you go between two strings) it matters how you START the phrase in terms weather it's with a downstroke or with an upstroke. A lot of the times Yngwie would actually start with an UPSTROKE which allows you to switch strings back and forth more comfortably as the lick unfolds so always experiment what makes more sense with a given pedal lick, it can make a huge difference, hope it helps Gregory, cheers!

      @@chasingfrets yes true his new albums the last three he uses fragments lines and bases his melody or riffs off of these fragments lines. He was obsessed with linear lines using major and minor scales before. Their is a guitarist named Michael Romeo which he has a VHS lesson on youtube from the 90's which I think yngwie stole a lot of his Michael Romeos ideas off of because he does that same things. I'm not sure if Michael Romeo did it first but I think yngwie watched the VHS lesson and learned a lot from Michael Romeo. I wish the VHS lesson was easier to watch but the camera is to far away to see what he is doing but maybe one day someone will do a youtube video lesson on Michael Romeo licks because its very yngwie.
