No. You don't need to go across, you can see it easily from the side. A few people decided not to go on the bridge, and our tour guide Moon made a point of saying you don't have to go on the bridge. So the question must come up a lot.

I did it with VIP Travel and booked directly through their website. www.vviptravel.com/tours/dmz-red-suspension-bridge-tour I was glad I spent the time researching reviews etc and picked VIP, as during my holiday I met others who had travelled on different DMZ tours. From what I can understand the other tours covered all the places to see but did not explain the history and context of the DMZ, or get the timing right so there was no waiting around. I would 100% recommend VIP and my tour guide, Moon.
