In late '69 I had just returned from Vietnam. My fellow Marines seeing I was a little uptight decided to take me to a culb in Santa Monica to unwind. The Oar House. On the way everyone dropped a tab of Sunshine and things predictably started getting weird. We made it and found a booth and were having a pretty good time, I felt Vietnam leaving my soul. Unbeknownst to me the Oar House had strobes placed throughout the club, in the ceiling at the bar all over the place. Just as we were starting to peak the lights went out, the strobes fired up and this music started to play. Everyone in the house jumped up and started to dance in the flashing glow of the strobes as God spoke to his children. It was a moment I'll never forget and I'm grateful to have lived in that time and place.

I’m a Bass player, but Tom Fogerty’s playing really made me appreciate the (sometimes ungrateful) role of the Rhythm Guitarist (along with Malcolm Young)
Always precise, not flashy, carrying the song while playing the matchmaker between the other instruments.
He’s so constant in his delivery it’s hypnotic

My daughter’s 14 and she loves CCR. How can you not… every member of the band is exceptional. Love Clifford’s drumming & Fogerty’s incomparable voice, in particular.
Don’t get me wrong, she likes Taylor and all the current stuff too, but she appreciates the classics from the 60s, 70s & 80s. She’s more well rounded than me… and that makes me pretty damn happy.

My mom (now 73) fondly recalls their show at Long Beach Arena in May of 1969. As this jam progressed that night, everyone took to standing on their chairs and clapping their hands over their head.

Love this song, Creedence Rocks! This is their first Album it was big back in the day. I was 12 years old, when my father used to play this on our console stereo. Sammy (Vietnam War Veteran) my cousin and my father (Korean War Veteran) would get together and play this full blast. Great Memories! Miss my cousin Sammy who is no longer with us.

They had a few bad ones but only on their last album, Mardi Gras, and only after the other band members pressured John to include their inferior numbers. What could he do? The band was already disintegrating after Tom left the band. Lots of jealously and resentment just ate up that band.

CCR is my all-time favorite band, and this song is my favorite CCR song. I first heard it when it came out, and now I'm 80 years old and I still love it.
A little story about that song: I spent the summer of 1970 with my Aussie girlfriend in Sweden, and on one long weekend we were invited to a 4-acre island out in the archipelago by a wealthy family. There was a very large & luxurious log mansion with perhaps the world's finest outhouse plus a small sleeping cabin on that tiny isle. This was a superb place!
We had magnificent dinners, fine wine, and pleasant evenings with good music and conversation. There were about six couples that weekend, and we all came by boat from various places. I had with me a large cassette tape recorder, one of the first with the small cassettes, and I had several small cassettes including Creedence Clearwater with "Keep On Chooglin'."
One night after dinner we were drinking French wine and sitting around listening to music and singing (Swedish parties were not drunk and disorderly back then ... they were very refined and nice ... not that I wasn't a wild guy, I was, but this was something new and I really loved it).
We were smoking Marlboros and Look cigarettes (good stuff), and I brought out my cassettes and said to everyone, "This is my favorite band ... CCR." When we got to "Chooglin'," everyone was sitting on the floor, and during the whole 7 minute 45 seconds song, everyone had their eyes closed, and their heads were swaying from side to side. We were all zoned out, totally sober, but the music ... oh my God, these people had never heard it and they absolutely stone cold loved it!
I have many more incredible memories of that amazing 3-month vacation, but the Chooglin' Weekend, with the beautiful girls in bikinis, the fine wine and cigarettes, the amazing food, and the fabulous music, especially CCR, was the highlight. I swear we were all in the clouds, literally, with our eyes closed and swaying to that wonderful Chooglin' song.

Introduced to this song and Creedence by a fellow Chicagoan named Bob Kouchma in AIT in 69. For some reason Bob thought I would like this sound. He was right, I was hooked and have been ever since. Tough little guy from the west side of Chi. We had a serious disagreement in the barracks one night after way to much beer, he won. Lost track of him after AIT. We all went to King Richards Tropical Jungle Vacation and were split up all over. I never forget my friends. If anyone from Ft. Lewis, summer 69, reads this, I made it, I hope life was good to you. Every time I hear this, I think of Bob, Toberman, Burt, and many others. And oh yeah, I stayed in the Phone book as promised.
