A week ago I happened to take a sleeper train home with a sailor from Vladivostok. He told me many stories. He said the sea of Japan and the surroundings are extremely dangerous to sail unprepared. Sailing there is a death sentence for sea poachers or just small fishing vessels there. No wonder there are many wrecked ships washing on the shores. He also told me he had to report shipwrecks and drowned sailors washed up on shore. And those north Koreans often violate Russian borders and they have beefs with authorities. Those Koreans are really suicidal going out to the sea like that lol

    For the record
Ghost ships are real, but not paranormal. Sometimes the crew abandons ship for some reason, they then die at sea, and the ship stays afloat for years if not decades. It is spooky, finding an old, worn-out but not actually damaged ship, intact ship, with no crew, or bodies inside... but this things happen, sometimes.
Much rarer now, but... still can happen.

These stories remind me of a ship called the SS Alkimos, a cursed merchant ship of many names, completed in the Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards in Baltimore, Maryland, and launched on October 11, 1943.
This “liberty ship” was originally going to be called the George M. Shriver. but, even as early as it’s assembly, things were going wrong. I.E. during construction, several mechanics were said to be trapped in the riveted compartments in the hull, and weren’t found until the next day, and by then they had already suffocated. So the US gave it to Norway, on October 20th, and it was renamed the Viggo Hansteen. It’s main use was to travel to the Indian ocean via the Suez canal. The Viggo Hansteen then earned it’s cursed reputation, even though it survived many U-boat attacks. The reputation came from things on board starting to malfunction. Classic horror trope-style stuff, lights flickering on and off, radios hissing out static, rooms suddenly getting cold, and the engines breaking down like a car when the protagonists are trying to get out. It got worse when a Canadian radio operator, who was a woman, was shot dead by one of the other crew members, who then shot himself, in a bizarre murder/suicide, this happening off the coast of Italy. After the war, the Viggo Hansteen was bought by Greek entrepreneurs in 1947, and renamed the SS Alkimos. The same happenings as before kept occurring, only now with the addition of ghostly figures. Many years later, on March 20, 1963, A storm appeared out of nowhere, driving the Alkimos onto some nearby reefs, just north of Perth, Australia. The ship had to be towed to the nearby port of Freemantle the next day for some basic repairs. While it was being repaired, the ship mysteriously caught fire. When the repairs were finished two months later, the plan was to tow it to Hong Kong for a full overhaul, but the towing line mysteriously snapped before the Alkimos barely made it out of the harbor, ending up beach just a few hundred yards away from the shore. Some say the storm howled in triumph, and the sea applauded. The entire crew was evacuated after having dropped anchor and flooded the lower decks to stabilize the vessel. One lone caretaker was left on the ship for months, with some saying he went insane from the isolation, and the caretaker claimed there was sinister moaning coming from around the ship, as well as fresh blood dripping from the walls. A year later, attempts were made to tow the Alkimos, but those also failed, with the shit mysteriously breaking a tanker train, and drifting almost suicidally onto the nearby rocky beach, as if to end itself, during which the Alkimos caught fire a second time.Later, attempts were made to salvage the ship, but the process was halted when a fierce fire broke out yet again, causing the workers to evacuate. This repeated every time a salvage crew tried the board, leading the crew to say “HELL NO!” When asked to try and salvage the Alkimos again. Many accounts claimed to of seen, heard, and smelled things while on board, with a few even claiming to be pushed by an invisible force. One of which, a female, suffered a miscarriage after being pushed. By 1969, all hope was lost for salvaging the SS Alkimos, so the US Navy sent submariners to do measurements of the propeller, all three of them died in a freak plane crash while on the way to the site. One long distance swimmer also mysteriously disappeared while training near the wreck, with many saying that the ship claimed him for its ghost crew. The wreck of the SS Alkimos now lies just below the water. And at low tide, you can see the top of her superstructure poking out from above the water, as if she’s mocking the world let them know that even in death, she is seemingly a ship that refuses to die…
TL;DR, giant ship is built, welders get stuck in it and suffocate, female radio operator is shot dead, and the ship catches fire numerous times and claims more victims to be part of its ghost crew.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk, I first heard about this ghost ship thanks to SimpleHistory, go check them out.

Nodoby knows what happened to the crew that hailed from China as they found their intact documents. There were lots of goods inside the cargo hold, it wasn't a big ship tho. Oh ! I actually read a book that included some about the Mary Celeste ! The book said one of the theories , and most realistic theories was that there were strange smells coming from the alcohol barrels , and the captain worried that it was going to explode , so he ordered the crew to evacuate ! Pretty cool , right ?

It’s not common around here to see Lithuanians anywhere really, including online (at least for me, I don’t seek them out). This was a pleasant surprise! Darbuokit toliau brolis!

The last one had a good comedy aspect to it. Everyone just frozen solid, and the captain frozen as he wrote his last words. Sounds like something out of a cartoon more than reality, and of course most definitely fiction.

A ship baring cargo is found sailing aimlessly with cargo intact and ship in good condition, only a lifeboat is missing. That is actually spooky. What could have possibly made them abandon ship? And what happened to them? We will literally never know.

  • @TheRandomMuffinMan

Huh this reminds me of my grandfather. A few days ago he was telling me about how he saw a ghost ship. He said that while was in the coast guard, him and some of other shipmates where working and he said that they saw an old 1600s-1700s ship that had tattered sails and shouldn’t have been able to sail. He said that it just sailed by and deeper into the fog, never seeing it again. He didn’t mention which sea he was in, what time of day it was or where this was though. But he seemed serious about it at least. He did mention that they all saw it but never reported it since they didn’t think anyone would believe them. Take the story as you will though.
