What a fucking awesome interview-(discussion)-The drum doctor (Ross), I have read, seen, heard and watched many of his featured videos and its always a amazing and funny as hell experience. Joey is a super down to earth traps masyter and deserves much love and respect. How many times has Ross saved the session i wonder with is many different drums?

Wow, exactly the type of content I crave for as a session drummer. Any chance the "audio" version of this podcast could end up on Apple Podcast/Spotify? I listen to podcasts while washing the dishes...

Quick question, I know the focus here is to have a conversation, but any chance you can share some info on the mic'ing process you use for these? What are you running your mics through?...etc....

Don’t forget the Linzer tarts Freddy needed his linzer tarts and his cigarettes I studied with Freddy for over 35 years weekly and I know exactly what you’re talking about I was his whipping post I was his delivery boy I had to stay with him Overnight but I learned So much From him during those overnight sessions because he Would open up about Drumming and Drumming technique he would do this just to keep me there
I wish I had a dollar fo everything I had to go to Bea’s bakery for him and Morts deli next-door
See the thing about Freddy as you didn’t just study with him you Apprenticed with him! you know “wax on wax off”he was the Miyagi sensei of the drums in

Funny thing what Joey said about Freddie, how nuts he was, but how on the spot he was about drumming, like what he said :"He said exact that what you needed to hear". I did an interview with Freddie when he stayed in Belgium in the early 90ies, we had dinner in the evening at Bruce Becker's little attic flat , talked and talked, the actual interview started around midnight and lasted till like 4-5 in the morning. One specific thing he told me as a teacher to a drummer, he said :"Are you serious about drumming? Do you wanna be serious about learning to play the drums? Why don't you pack your things and move to NY and dig in"...And he was right, because at that moment I did not follow his advice, and I still regret it till today...And Ross what a moment, Buddy and Freddie in one room !

What makes a good groove? I’ll tell y’all: call up the blues medley during Whole Lotta Love from the How The West Was Won LZ cd. At some points they pull it down and stretch it (the beat) out to the unrecognizable. Here’s where the importance of Bonzo is never better recognized. He never once loses “the groove.” Not losing your place and keeping proper time. That’s what makes a great groove IMO. He (Bonzo) was a tremendous blues drummer in every sense. Without him this would’ve been an overt disaster. He made whatever Page and Plant wrote, work. We’re talking about four of England’s most technically adept players here. This is why Zeppelin had no equal.

    Asking myself…
“Who’s is this man? I have been learning this obsession of so many current drummers who play worship and or simply love the same cymbal sounds of this drummer. Idk if popularity is rising with Istanbul Cymbals… or if they are more on my radar… what makes this guy so special? Why is his name on what seems to be a legendary ride cymbal? Who is he?”
This is my very first glimpse into this drummer. Looking forward to diving deep into all his music.

Hi Ross - I really love the tone of those toms. I have 1962 Ludwig kit with the same shell sizes, would love to get it set up like this. What model coated remos did you setup for this video? If you remember the batter and reso choices for this I'd be super excited to know.

Bought a cheap kit....getting inspired to set it up!

A live version of Sheep came into my feed a month ago, from Rogers’ 22-23 Not A Drill tour. I’ve known this song over 30 years…but didn’t know the current drummer of it. It was Joey. Good God Almighty above…what a drummer! Immediately I fell for his feel, time, fills and groove maintaining. Side note: I saw a Gordon Lightfoot film and commenting in it was a Lenny Waronker. I wasn’t surprised at all from there….

Hitting the drums quieter during recording allows the drum to breath. You can really squeeze more tone out of the preamps and compressors.

One more Stereo AEA R88 Ribbon mic over the top center of the kit just out of frame/view from their wide shot. Interface and preamps are the Universal Audio 8P.
Don't know what mic or preamp emulations, reverb, and/or plugins were used.
