Off The Record with the drum doctor (OTR Series)
United States

Welcome to Off The Record with the Drum Doctor!
So, I've done a lot of sessions over the years and met a lot of great people along the way. Now, I'm sitting down with some of them and reminiscing about our adventures together, sharing insights and stories that you might find interesting. You won't get any tips about technique here, nor will you see any flashy playing - there are plenty of sites that do an excellent job of that! Here, you can spend some quality time with the world's most renowned drummers, listen to their stories, find out what makes them tick and maybe even learn a few new things. And of course, I'll show you some of the coolest drums in my collection!
Thanks for watching,
Ross Garfield

Jim's wisdom to consider:
1. Always be prepared.
2. You can find unique sounds anywhere. Keep your ears open and have fun.
3. Nerves are your friend. Use them to your advantage.
4. Get out of your own way and get out of your head.

Too sad there's only 3 episodes of this!
big hug .... ! =). oh man ... watching the river flow ... what can I say that you didn't say already.? my heart is starting to beat again. Thank You. I've alway wondered what eyes lurk behind those shades. nice to see you! =)
Rock'n'Roll ... I love it. it was great listening to you and i appreciate your mind Jim, as well as your playing . it's inspiring. I dig what you were saying about the reaping and the sowing ... I do tend to go by that, but man, sometimes people are not appreciative of kindness or a helping hand ... it's the oddest thing. none the less I keep living by that golden rule. but I do feel like a stranger in a strange land sometimes ... anyway, keep rockin. many blessings. you guys are super cool. Thanks for sharing this video.

Met Jim at NAMM years ago. Was very gracious about letting me take his picture. He's basically the yardstick for playing a song with compassionate feel and connection....PERIOD!
Beautiful interview, thanks so much
441 sets of drums. 🥰 That's insane! I love it.
Legend❤ Priceless
Love the conversation about Jerry Lee 🎹🎙🖤🔥🔥🔥
I'd like to hang out with this guy. Very smart guy.
Ross .I'm Alan Zukor. You work with my Nephew Joey Waronker. I was his his first drum teacher at nine years old. Taught him his first two years. He got so good so fast that I felt I taught him all I could . I then turned him over to my great drummer buddy Jim Carnelli who was much better at jazz then I was . I thought it was important for Joey to be more well rounded and be familiar with all styles of drumming. It was like God himself touched Joey's soul. It was literally astounding how good he got. He practiced and practiced & always nailed his lessons. I NEVER had to ask if he studied his lessons because it was obvious he had. I knew when he was 13nyears old this was goung to be his calling & his profession & livelihood. Joey made me so proud . We're going to connect this summer & I'm giving him my mint Peavey pro 1000 7 pc kit with a snare drum that will totally BLOW his mind and yours as well. I saw an interview with you & Joey on the way to a Roger Waters show in Sacramento. You asked him how he got started. He mentioned me in that interview. I almost shit my pants cause I never thought he would give me a cudo because I'm not Poccaro. But it was so cool. I'm in Reno gigging still at 74 years old.
There should be much more of these interviews!!
For me the most amazing (snare)drum sounds are from Toto IV and Alex van Halen's snare sound and the bassdrum from Michael Jackson's Billy Jean. And finally i see The Face of The Drum Doctor. Thank you.
Abe's one of best and he genuinely seems like a sweet dude. Thanks for this!
I have long been a fan of your work, Ross. We have never met, but I have been paying attention to your work for decades...because of the music you have been a part of...and because of how you are a part of that music. Credit to 'Drum Doctor' was printed on a whole heck of a lot of phenomenal records...for good reason!
You are a great host Ross. A great interviewer. It’s so respectful and casual, you listen and never cut people off. Great stuff and really appreciate you doing these 🙏
My dream job.
Drum passion. ✌️
I use e drum (Roland td27) for recording. Do you recommend that I do parallel compression on each channel separately (kick, snare, oh, toms) or not?
What makes a good groove? I’ll tell y’all: call up the blues medley during Whole Lotta Love from the How The West Was Won LZ cd. At some points they pull it down and stretch it (the beat) out to the unrecognizable. Here’s where the importance of Bonzo is never better recognized. He never once loses “the groove.” Not losing your place and keeping proper time. That’s what makes a great groove IMO. He (Bonzo) was a tremendous blues drummer in every sense. Without him this would’ve been an overt disaster. He made whatever Page and Plant wrote, work. We’re talking about four of England’s most technically adept players here. This is why Zeppelin had no equal.
A live version of Sheep came into my feed a month ago, from Rogers’ 22-23 Not A Drill tour. I’ve known this song over 30 years…but didn’t know the current drummer of it. It was Joey. Good God Almighty above…what a drummer! Immediately I fell for his feel, time, fills and groove maintaining. Side note: I saw a Gordon Lightfoot film and commenting in it was a Lenny Waronker. I wasn’t surprised at all from there….

Spon on about other musicians responsible for the groove as well. Oh man how many times I wanted to quit playing just because the folks I ended up playing with were duds. And sometimes you play with an “untrained” guy who has “soul” in his simple strumming, and you experience that bliss..❤
Great interview. Thanks for posting it. The Ludwig kit in the opening sounds really good . Can you tell us which 3 mics were used ? thanks.
Along with Hal Blaine and a few other drummers, Ross has helped make Music recorded in L.A. and made his mark on music heard everydayn on the radio, in a car, in a bar, across the street, around the world...fucking crazy and amazing, keep it up Ross!
What a fucking awesome interview-(discussion)-The drum doctor (Ross), I have read, seen, heard and watched many of his featured videos and its always a amazing and funny as hell experience. Joey is a super down to earth traps masyter and deserves much love and respect. How many times has Ross saved the session i wonder with is many different drums?
Have the same kit except mine's a 24" bass drum. I do have a black beauty. Not that particular one! Abe is awesome! Say hey to Rusty for me! He's an old friend.
Oh i was so pleased to catch this video i had my steel ludwig kit stolen years ago so it was great to see Abe getting that sound and reminding me of "deep" vibes that the kit can deliver ...Thankyou
How can that man be 80 years old? (or almost, at the time of the video). People say Ringo aged well, but Jim looks 20 years younger than he is.
@ 18:00 minutes he's sharing facts..straight edge players are musicians..take advice from a living legend.🎉🎉🎉❤🎉🎉🎉
This man right here is drum legacy. Dude is a true legend! He gave the drum sounds to all the records we love. That put him in the top place by far
I loved his words about community at the end, getting out there and playing with whatever people doing whatever music is what will make you a better musician and person, and so much more in this fucked up times we are living in.
The wisdom of a true master.
1:34 !I wonder if he also calls him Stink to his face 😂
