Should The Avs Change Up Their Power Play Or Just Hope It Will Fix Itself?

The power play is so predictable that it doesn't matter how skilled they are, opponents have watched their tape and can anticipate their every move. Hockey is a sport of chaos and unexpected bounces and split second mistakes that lead to goals, and the Avs just refuse to incorporate that element into their PP. Chris is right, just give some new looks and make the other team scramble around a little bit more.

Chris I was thinking the same thing about putting the high-energy guys out first getting some chaos going then throw out your skill guys. Kind of like the rolling 40s line from last year with Wood, Colton and Loc. I miss our high-energy (wood, coldton, Loc) line and I miss the heart of Cogs in the PK.

I hate to say this, but it doesn't seem like this team is really playing for each other at times.. like they don't have each other's backs.
In the past, if someone laid a big hit on MacK, they'd at least get a hard stare down if not a challenge from Landy or MacDermid.
The Avs don't respond well to teams roughing them up. They actually do pretty well when they play with a little grit and swagger and we haven't seen grit since the Cup winning team.
From Kadri to Manson, Helm and Cogs and even MacDermid when he saw time. We didn't get pushed around as much and we could actually lay a hit.
Manson hasn't laid a decent hit this season from what I saw. Cale sure as hell doesn't do it anymore even though he's capable.
Obviously that's not everything, but it's what teams are doing to us to throw us off of our rhythm and we're not able to recover with this current team.
We lost a little fire when we let Kadri walk and we lost grit and determination when Cogs and Helm retired.
Landy never backed down, but he may not ever hit the ice again at this point.

The Avs have fallen in love with their setup when they should just simplify things by putting pucks to the net. Park Val and Lehky in front, and get the big 3 to take shots. It's not rocket science.

Good things happen when you get pucks on net. Or so I've heard.

@LockedOnAvalanche Agreed! The reason why the Avs were so successful early in the season with the pp was when they had no net front with Val and Lehky missing games, they were using that bumper position for one-timers which was simple. Setup, pass, and shot.

Coaching might be the problem here. The way the Avs conduct a PP hasn't changed for the last 3-4 years. It has become too predictable. Losing the opening face(MacKinnon) wastes time. The drop pass to MacKinnon has become easier to defend. Case in point, his beautiful assist on the Sherwood goal the other night. Too much passing, Too little movement, no creativity. Simply put, predictable. Changing skaters on the PP won't make any difference if the method remains the same.

I’m throwing it out there. Coaching change, for real. It’s time

Why don’t they shoot the puck? They pass way to much. Casey looks scared out there. When you shoot you get rebounds.

The power play is too finesse and fragile. They need to switch to a more rugged style of chaos, with traffic in front of the goalie to maximize rebounds, deflections, lucky bounces, inadvertent picks, interferences, and blockages. The skill level of the Avalanche actually prevents them from playing this grittier, more effective style. I think the coaches must be thinking that with some of the most skilled players in the league that they have to design a power play around high-level skating, passing, etc.

I was thinking the same thing, why don't they start off with some high-energy guys first then throw in the talent? Something to mix it up.

Mix up the zone entries instead of the same 2 every single time. Start in an overload and move into the umbrella. And for the love of God, show some desperation when you lose the puck. There should always be two men on the puck if not in possession

Kelly can win faceoffs consistently. Put him on PP1 to set up the PP. He's a solid enough player that not much will be lost. Cycle PP1 and PP2 every 30 seconds. Don't leave PP1 out there for 2 full minutes. Switch out PP1 with PP2 piecemeal.

They are just getting beat with every puck battle and fight in the corner. They need to change up the roster a little bit more to be a challenging team this season

Said it everywhere and multiple times, the Powerplay is actively losing games.
Edited to add, if the Avs change up the personnel on the PP on a flow type method............in classic current Avs Style..............they are taking a "Too Many Men" Penalty. Let's not even kid ourselves🤦‍♂️🤮

Definitely change it. Reduce pp1 time. It's abysmal. One of the only teams that struggle to even score on a 5 in 3 this season.
