@@emmap154 To be fair Azula had Iroh and Ursa as well, but she rejected them. She also had Mai and Ty Lee, but she abused them to a point that they chosed alternatives. I know that she was a victim, but so was everyone else. She liked the power that she had and was ready to give all the other alternatives for it, really like Ozai. Ozai had the option to make healthy environment for himself as well but power was too important for him to go for any other option. To take Azula's agency and make her into a complete puppet of Ozai is not realistic. Azula and Ozai were combination of external influences and inheret traits like everyone else in the show or in real world. No one is born Evil ever.
We’ll both of you guys a right, azula was trapped in this mindset where she had nobody but they were always there for her. She had ursa, iroh, Zuko, and Mai and ty lee. But her mind didn’t believe that
@@ArasRud She did not reject anyone, stop blaming the child for the actions of their parents and adults around them. Azula was 9 at most when Ursa left, how could she reject her mother? Ursa never provided her kind words or explained exactly why Azula's behavior was wrong, that is why she gravited towards Ozai, since he provided her most positive feedback. Azula knew that to impress her father she just had to perfect some firebending moves, but with Ursa? It seemed that no matter what she did she only earned scorn, the same stuff that pleased Ozai did not please Ursa and it confused her, she behaved bad because it was the only way Ursa payed attention to her and the constant scolding morphed into complete rejection in Azula's mind, it is hard for a child to differenciate the two. And her hallucination at the end just proves that Azula wants to be loved by her mother, by her family. She blames Ursa for everything that went bad in her life because she left for her favorite, for Zuko, and then she could not protect her from Ozai, she was not there to protect her from becoming his child soldier and weapon and believes the monster she is now it is all her fault for not supporting her.
Azula never had Iroh, he does not know her and does not try to get close to her, he sent her a doll as a gift when Azula does not like them, he talks of his 14yo niece as if she was the devil ("she is crazy and needs to go down") and actively discouraged her brother from forming a relationship with her as if Iroh was not worse than her at his fifties, as a grown adult and not even a decade ago (he was a popular general for a reason, he desired to burn Ba Sing Se to the ground, the capital of the EK and home of refugees, he sieged the place for almost two years and only retired when his own son ended up as a casualty, but seemed he had no problem killing the sons of others, and Azula conquered the place in a bloodless coup in less than a week)
Azula's craving for power comes from Ozai's teachings, he promoted that mindset that power was everything, and she knows how easy it is to fell off his favor. If she was not powerful, if she could not be what Ozai wanted from her and he left, then she was truly alone and all the horrible stuff she did would have been for nothing. Ozai's affection is conditional and Azula knows this, and it is also the only type of love she knows, so she offers the same. If you cannot live up to her exlectarions of you, if you cannot fit into the role the fire nation gives you, then she discards you (what happened to Mai and Ty Lee, most obviously with the later since we see that since the very first moment they interact [Ty lee was a noble and ran off to a circus, Azula does not respect her for that], but she and Mai were genuenly friends, they joked together, Mai shows having no fear to her [girl literally screams at her with no second thought at the beach] and Azula openly told to her terrible parents that she believes Mai is better and more competent than them). She firmly believes in the strong-weak mindset of the FN and that she, as a strong person, had the right to impose her will, that she owes nothing, that forgiveness and atoning for one's mistakes is for weaklings. Just... fire nation propaganda at its finest.
She avoids facing the reality that she, deep down, knows that her actions are wrong, that she did, in fact, push everyone that cared about her away with her conditional love and the "fear is better than trust" way of having relationships she learned from her family dynamic (since Ozai controlled every single one of them with fear) sorrounding herself with more people to control and harm because it means that she is not alone with her thoughts.
She IS a bad person, she has done terrible things. She could have not treathen Ty lee with death if she did not join her, she could have not tricked Zuko into a false sense of security to capture him using his emotions against him, she could have not mock Zuko for learning slow. But the amount of agency she has is reduced if you take into account she is a child and only defiantly talking back to her father can get her face burned and killed... literally
This song captures Zuko so well! He may not have been a villain but he also had the chance to become one without Iroh or Ursa. But this is beautiful, I think it also matches with his emotional struggle.

This is absolutely amazing! This is soo perfect for Zuko! The scenes you chose fit sooo well! Everything Zuko went through could have made him the villian. But Zuko instead became a hero and rejected his father's abuse! ❤❤❤❤
