@@lorrie873I have to agree. While Azula’s arc is tragic, and (in retrospect) I feel sorry for her, her trauma doesn’t really compare to Zuko’s. Yes, Azula was made into a weapon, but Ozai was doing the same thing with Zuko (and was successful for a while) before he turned against his father. Also, they were both manipulated and indoctrinated by their father; the difference is that Azula at least got some semblance of “love”/care? from their only parent left (after Ursa left). And yes, it is incredibly sad that their mother didn’t have the same care for her daughter that she had for her son, but all that pales in comparison to Zuko’s most obvious trauma: having half of his face burned off by his father (while everyone just watched) for defending a group of soldiers, and then being banished on an impossible mission. And, yeah, sure, maybe that mission eventually ended up being good for Zuko, but that doesn’t really change the trauma behind the act-all the times he risked his life to try and earn the love of someone who was never going to give it, and who should of given it freely from the beginning.

The moment with Azula just staring into the fire hit me really hard for some reason. It seemed like something she actually did as a child and it fits so well with the song. All of this was just amazing!
There is literally so much lore stuffed into this animatic that syncs up with the lyrics, it's crazy!!! When he says, "I learned the voices died with me," while showing young Zuko's shocked face; that's him, learning from Azula that Ozai plans to kill him. That Ozai's shame will die with Zuko. Literally nuts! I love this so much!!
Ok, so at 3:25 Azula has her hand on Zuko's shoulder, but once it cuts to the fire nation she isn't anymore. It's sorta like she wants to comfort and protect him, but once she's in the fire nation she isn't allowed to.
Not at ALL. Azula has literally tried to kill zuko multiple times. Do not even dare attempt this theory that she "wasnt allowed to care" it's not even plausible
I feel like just because she lived an abusive household doesn’t change the fact that Azula probably has anti social disorder (a sociopath.) However if raised right with understanding she could’ve turned out better ofc. Sociopaths can and do the right things with the right support

I think she has megalomaniac tendencies and on the spectrum of an antisocial personality disorder (which can also be called sociopathy) and that her mothers clear favoritism towards Zuko and calling her a monster didn’t help. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that she’s just 14 in the show... this doesn’t excuse her thou, she *needs* help. But it’s not just her being a sociopath.
A regular "sketchy" animatic is already hard to do, but *this*? Fully painted/rendered? Amazing!! I can't imagine the work it must have took! It's beautiful, congrats :)))
I know it's typical for artists to dislike their old art as they improve, but I, for one, think this is stunning, especially in the way you faithfully recreated so many scenes from the show, and in such detail. Special attention goes to Azula's pose at 3:43. I also liked the shading on Ozai's face at 0:25 and Azula's snarling expression at 3:32. Excellent work!
Thanks so much! That final Azula pose was definitely the frame I spent the longest on, so I'm glad it's appreciated!! In general I'm proud of it but as you can imagine I've spent a lot of time looking at every frame of this so there's been plenty of time to see the mistakes haha.

I really like how the song and art reflects the parallels between Zuko and Azula. A picture that really got me was how there’s the two of azula and zuko, first in the earth blender clothes and azula actually has a comforting hand on zuko’s shoulder, but only for a moment because it’s gone when they’re in fire nation clothes again. It show for a moment that they’re siblings that both suffered growing up, and maybe how they carry a shred of a sibling bond. Like how in the beach episode, when azula for the only time in the series sought zuko out and genuinely seemed care and empathize with zuko as he was reflecting on his parents and being a family. Azula asking him to come with her and commented that it was a depressing place, as she likely shared similar thoughts to zuko. Ik this got really deep but just goes to show how amazing this art was, besides just being beautifully drawn. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
ahhh thanks so much! I'm glad you caught that, I've always personally seen it as there was some genuine affection there, as much as it may be buried. I guess it's all down to interpretation bc obviously Azula can be very manipulative so some people view her signs of concern as false, but there are definitely a few times in the show where she seems to show care for Zuko with nothing to gain for herself so 🤷♂️
This is beautifully done. Amazing song too! I especially like the part where it’s talking about “gasoline was on his clothes” and it cuts to the curtain to the war room. As in speaking out in that war room was the catalyst for his destiny.
Omg I just wrote a comment saying a similar thing! It's like that lyric became a metaphor for how Zuko standing up to Ozai was similar to pouring gasoline on himself, setting himself up to be literally burned.

And then "the place you need to reach" being Zuko, showing how the place Azula needs to reach now is her brother, who was inferior to her all his life, but now surpassed her
I know this is all stuff that happened in the show, but seeing it told from Zuko and Azula's side first really gives it a different perspective. I love it.

This is so good! I especially loved the quote “I knew something would always rule me” with Ozai standing over zuko because for so long he was the thing dictating all of Zuko’s actions and beliefs. And then the cut to “all you have is your fire and the place you need to reach” with aang as the place zuko has needed to reach is just incredible. This is so well done.
The lyrics work so hauntingly well with this animatic oh my gosh. And the visuals a purely stunning. Azula and Zuko’s development will always be a staple in the world animation and story writing AND YOU DID IT SO MUCH JUSTICE!! I basically never leave comments, but this deserves so much praise ... your colours and art are so lush and the story beats are impeccable and its bringing out All The Emotion. the lighting in every scene and every frame is so gorgeous, its like the sun/candlelight loves these fire children - I think all the earth kingdom scenes are my favourite. the contemplation on zuko's face as he holds the knife, then the fierce determination as he cuts off his hair... his trusting open expression with uncle iroh... the uncertain horror watching azula(and the lightning lighting him in his eyes... i have been listening to this song and thinking about it and azula for the past couple of weeks, and then this popped up in my youtube recommended and i literally gasped out loud. i was ready to love this as soon as i clicked on it, and yet you absolutely BLEW me away. this is simply stunning in every possible way. absolutely, genuinely incredible.

This was beautiful! It's seldom you see an animatic with so much attention to detail (and even coloured!). But the thing that stroke me the most is how expressive the frames were! You could feel the character's emotion as well as the whole situation they were in. Truly an amazing artwork! Keep it up!
This is gorgeously well done, both artistically and storytelling-wise. I love how the lighting and colors play a key role in how the characters are doing. We mostly see Azula in a bright fiery setting and with her (brief) blue lightning bolt, and we also see Zuko within a bright fiery setting but in more calm settings as well, such as when he is living in the Earth Kingdom with Uncle Iroh. The colors and settings are conveying the siblings’ stories, emotions, and developments. Incredible job!!

I think this song really fits Zuko and Azula’s stories. The art is amazing, and I really like how you showed them when the lyrics made sense. I feel like if I had to pick one song that would fit Zuko’s character, it would be this song. Overall, this is beautiful!

Me and my partner were just discussing how this song fits them so well the other day and I am so happy someone had the same thought and made something so awesome as a result :') ❤️
This is amazing! The song fits perfectly and the art is incredibly well done. I was particularly impressed with the part in the beginning where Azula is staring into the fire and the flames pulse in time with the beat. Great job!
The fact that first time “all you had is your fire/and a place you need to reach” is Azula performing in front of their grandfather and then her kneeling in front of the fire throne, the second time is Zuko staring off into the distance with the angry scar on his face and then the wanted poster of Aang and a map to hopefully find him, and the third time is Azula again, but unhinged with their mother in the mirror before it cuts over to Zuko preparing to fight the last Agni Kai just hits so hard. Just the artistic choices around this one repeating lyric is like... chills. It characterises them so well, because wow, Azula’s always been characterised by her superior fire as she reaches up to the place of the fire lord, whether it be her father or pleasing her grandfather, which is still to satisfy her father. The fire throne being what she’s trying to get is also brilliant, because it could symbolise either her want for power or her want for her father’s attention, dependent on your interpretation of her. Zuko, on the other hand, has only wanted love and not really power from his father, and him while hunting for the avatar is such a good example of it, since he has quite literally nothing but his fire as he wants to get home. Aang is his only way home, and he Needs to capture the Avatar, and his desperation for it has turned him bitter and angry, which I interpreted as seen in the way he doesn’t smile until after he cuts off his hair, contrasted to Aang smiling on the poster. And the final turn is just, wow. We can see what their previous choices of when all they had of their fire turn out, with Azula completely mentally broken down, her mother a haunting presence in her head that’s trespassed out into reality, while Zuko is prepared to defeat his sister, the shining example of all he needed to be and the one person he would never compare to, and more importantly, his only sibling, (once again, depending on your interpretation of Azula, it could be either a good or bad thing but judging from the little hand on his shoulder, I’m going to call it as a bad one and say that Azula does love him but in her warped and twisted way), to save the world from her.

But honestly the amount of time and work you put into this is breath-taking and it's just all alsfkjalsfajskflasfjasfasjkasf. I didn't really get into the little details and choices you put into the art because I really have some physics homework due yesterday that I need to do, but it's just all so incredible and I think that every little meaningful detail should be appreciated because they're all just So Meaningful!!!! (I'll come back and rant about some other things after I finish my homework. :) )

As a big Hozier fan who just finished watching ATLA and TLOK, let me just say that this is so perfect!! I love this so much and I never thought to connect the song to Azula and Zuko.
I'm on a roll of watching ATLA animatics, but this was AMAZING. Arsonist's Lullabye really does fit well with the fire nation siblings. But the art? Incredible.

Oh wow I really don’t have enough words to express how beautiful this is. Every single frame is beautiful, they all have meaning, they all connect to the song, and they all evoke a feeling in the viewer. This may be the highest quality animatic I have EVER seen on TH-cam. It feels more like the quality of a polished graphic novel! I can’t believe that at the time I’m viewing it, it has less that 100k views. That has got to be a crime against the quality of this art. All in all, great job!!!

I recently finished my most recent rewatch of The Last Airbender and this must be the most impressive piece of art I've seen since the rebirth of the fandom
Okay, this is seriously fantastic, the artistry and attention to detail makes this great, the deeper meanings and characteristically attuned imagery mixed with the song makes this amazing. I love the narrative flip of the lyrics as it's shifts from azula knowing exactly who she is to losing herself in her own desperate need to prove her worth and image, vs the same story being told for zuko, just in reverse. The only difference is that azula didn't believe she needed anyone, she thought her own cruelty would protect her from herself but it wasn't enough. With zuko, he never appreciated what iroh did for him until he was without him however, he didn't have the need to prove perfection as he was never that in anyone's eyes (except perhaps his mother's) which allowed him to acccept his mistakes and try to improve. Meanwhile, that's the whole reason azula is the way she is. She's had to live under the expectations that came with the toxic perfectionism from her father: a man who nearly murdered his own son over questioning the morality of abandoning an entire platoon of soldiers to die just to get a little bit ahead instead of coming up with a different strategy. So naturally, she would be terrified of the same fate befalling her, lest she step out of line, hence why it would go against her own survival instincts to accept she messed up in even the slightest. And that scene where she stares into the fire? Phenomenal. It so perfectly captures her lust for power, the same power that brought the only emotion from her father to her: terror. He never once showed any love for azula, he only ever showed how proud he was for *"his"* achievement of azulas success. Truly, the only thing she had was her fire; her source of power, the likes of which to rule over others simply because she has known nothing else. [Of course, her mother cared for her in some sense but she was ultimately still terrified of azula. Not to mention, azulas behavior garnered discipline from her mother, the likes of which she would never do in front of her father for fear of her own well being. And because her mother feared her, she used that to further manipulate their mother into the same vicious cycle that was endured with her fater - fear me, and i wont hurt you. Thus ruining her only chances to feel loved for who she is]
One thing I love about this animatic (besides just how perfect everything fits the characters) is the almost constent movement. nearly every still image has just enough going on to keep your attention, without being a distraction from the lyrics. (like scenes with the flickering fire, and when the background moves independantly of the main image) (ADHD brain is very happy with this)

When Azula is staring into the fireplace as a child, it's creepy. But in in a good way. Throughout the series, she has zero regard for life and her just staring into that roaring flame with that expression, in my opinion, captures that. Very good.

A picture that really got me was how there’s the two of azula and zuko, first in the earth blender clothes and azula actually has a comforting hand on zuko’s shoulder, but only for a moment because it’s gone when they’re in fire nation clothes again. It show for a moment that they’re siblings that both suffered growing up, and maybe how they carry a shred of a sibling bond.
Like how in the beach episode, when azula for the only time in the series sought zuko out and genuinely seemed care and empathize with zuko as he was reflecting on his parents and being a family. Azula asking him to come with her and commented that it was a depressing place, as she likely shared similar thoughts to zuko.
Ik this got really deep but just goes to show how amazing this art was, besides just being beautifully drawn. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
ahhh thanks so much! I'm glad you caught that, I've always personally seen it as there was some genuine affection there, as much as it may be buried. I guess it's all down to interpretation bc obviously Azula can be very manipulative so some people view her signs of concern as false, but there are definitely a few times in the show where she seems to show care for Zuko with nothing to gain for herself so 🤷♂️

This is beautifully done. Amazing song too! I especially like the part where it’s talking about “gasoline was on his clothes” and it cuts to the curtain to the war room. As in speaking out in that war room was the catalyst for his destiny.
Omg I just wrote a comment saying a similar thing! It's like that lyric became a metaphor for how Zuko standing up to Ozai was similar to pouring gasoline on himself, setting himself up to be literally burned.

I basically never leave comments, but this deserves so much praise ... your colours and art are so lush and the story beats are impeccable and its bringing out All The Emotion. the lighting in every scene and every frame is so gorgeous, its like the sun/candlelight loves these fire children - I think all the earth kingdom scenes are my favourite. the contemplation on zuko's face as he holds the knife, then the fierce determination as he cuts off his hair... his trusting open expression with uncle iroh... the uncertain horror watching azula(and the lightning lighting him in his eyes... HIS EYES...and azula oh my GOSH). especially with that contrast with azula's smug determination... and azula putting one hand on his shoulder... anyway spectacular work pigeon, you are loved

"All you have is your fire" WHO KNEW THIS SONG WAS ABOUT THEM??!!! These poor kids had NOTHING disguised as having EVERYTHING.
This is gorgeously well done, both artistically and storytelling-wise. I love how the lighting and colors play a key role in how the characters are doing. We mostly see Azula in a bright fiery setting and with her (brief) blue lightning bolt, and we also see Zuko within a bright fiery setting but in more calm settings as well, such as when he is living in the Earth Kingdom with Uncle Iroh. The colors and settings are conveying the siblings’ stories, emotions, and developments. Incredible job!!

Why are you so underrated
It’s criminal
The fact that first time “all you had is your fire/and a place you need to reach” is Azula performing in front of their grandfather and then her kneeling in front of the fire throne, the second time is Zuko staring off into the distance with the angry scar on his face and then the wanted poster of Aang and a map to hopefully find him, and the third time is Azula again, but unhinged with their mother in the mirror before it cuts over to Zuko preparing to fight the last Agni Kai just hits so hard. Just the artistic choices around this one repeating lyric is like... chills.
It characterises them so well, because wow, Azula’s always been characterised by her superior fire as she reaches up to the place of the fire lord, whether it be her father or pleasing her grandfather, which is still to satisfy her father. The fire throne being what she’s trying to get is also brilliant, because it could symbolise either her want for power or her want for her father’s attention, dependent on your interpretation of her.
Zuko, on the other hand, has only wanted love and not really power from his father, and him while hunting for the avatar is such a good example of it, since he has quite literally nothing but his fire as he wants to get home. Aang is his only way home, and he Needs to capture the Avatar, and his desperation for it has turned him bitter and angry, which I interpreted as seen in the way he doesn’t smile until after he cuts off his hair, contrasted to Aang smiling on the poster.
And the final turn is just, wow. We can see what their previous choices of when all they had of their fire turn out, with Azula completely mentally broken down, her mother a haunting presence in her head that’s trespassed out into reality, while Zuko is prepared to defeat his sister, the shining example of all he needed to be and the one person he would never compare to, and more importantly, his only sibling, (once again, depending on your interpretation of Azula, it could be either a good or bad thing but judging from the little hand on his shoulder, I’m going to call it as a bad one and say that Azula does love him but in her warped and twisted way), to save the world from her.

But honestly the amount of time and work you put into this is breath-taking and it's just all alsfkjalsfajskflasfjasfasjkasf. I didn't really get into the little details and choices you put into the art because I really have some physics homework due yesterday that I need to do, but it's just all so incredible and I think that every little meaningful detail should be appreciated because they're all just So Meaningful!!!!

Okay, this is seriously fantastic, the artistry and attention to detail makes this great, the deeper meanings and characteristically attuned imagery mixed with the song makes this amazing.
I love the narrative flip of the lyrics as it's shifts from azula knowing exactly who she is to losing herself in her own desperate need to prove her worth and image, vs the same story being told for zuko, just in reverse.
The only difference is that azula didn't believe she needed anyone, she thought her own cruelty would protect her from herself but it wasn't enough.
With zuko, he never appreciated what iroh did for him until he was without him however, he didn't have the need to prove perfection as he was never that in anyone's eyes (except perhaps his mother's) which allowed him to acccept his mistakes and try to improve.
Meanwhile, that's the whole reason azula is the way she is. She's had to live under the expectations that came with the toxic perfectionism from her father: a man who nearly murdered his own son over questioning the morality of abandoning an entire platoon of soldiers to die just to get a little bit ahead instead of coming up with a different strategy. So naturally, she would be terrified of the same fate befalling her, lest she step out of line, hence why it would go against her own survival instincts to accept she messed up in even the slightest.
And that scene where she stares into the fire? Phenomenal.
It so perfectly captures her lust for power, the same power that brought the only emotion from her father to her: terror.
He never once showed any love for azula, he only ever showed how proud he was for *"his"* achievement of azulas success.
Truly, the only thing she had was her fire; her source of power, the likes of which to rule over others simply because she has known nothing else.
[Of course, her mother cared for her in some sense but she was ultimately still terrified of azula. Not to mention, azulas behavior garnered discipline from her mother, the likes of which she would never do in front of her father for fear of her own well being.
And because her mother feared her, she used that to further manipulate their mother into the same vicious cycle that was endured with her fater - fear me, and i wont hurt you. Thus ruining her only chances to feel loved for who she is]

One thing I love about this animatic (besides just how perfect everything fits the characters) is the almost constent movement. nearly every still image has just enough going on to keep your attention, without being a distraction from the lyrics. (like scenes with the flickering fire, and when the background moves independantly of the main image)

When Azula is staring into the fireplace as a child, it's creepy. But in in a good way. Throughout the series, she has zero regard for life and her just staring into that roaring flame with that expression, in my opinion, captures that.
