I was a nurse for 30 years working in end of life care. I'm as tough as old boots because of this, it takes a lot to make me cry. But this song gets me every time
When I saw you were reacting to this song following your video about the issues you are going through with your family, I said out loud “oh dear”. I’m sure many people will comment about the situation that caused James Blunt to write this song, so I’ll skip that part. The part that hits me so hard is when James says “don’t be afraid. It’s my turn to chase the monsters away. As a child, my mom was hugs and kisses, but dad was the one I needed when I was scared. He looked under the bed and in the closet to make sure there was nothing there that could hurt me. Dad was security. He’s gone now, I only wish I’d had the chance to chase the monsters away for him. ❤
I heard James donated all the proceeds from this video to the wonderful UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do such brilliant work for ex-servicemen & women, and as an ex military man myself, I think that was a beautiful thing to do. 🙋♂
This song shows why folks follow you. You listen to every word and react from your heart. You appreciate the music, the instruments, the vocals, and the lyrics and connect it to your life, the art of music. It's not just a money play for you. Keep on keepin on.❤
Hi, James wrote this song for his dad who at the time had end stage kidney failure and they couldn't get a suitable doner match. The prognosis was terminal. Luckily after releasing the song/video a long lost cousin came forward and was a perfect match. Both James & his dad have been Officers in the British Army - both served on active duty in war zones. The lyrics "I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was what they said to each other before being deployed.
He served in Kosovo in the British military which be why he looks like a John Wick type. His father was also military. When James was being deployed his father said “you’re not my son. I’m not your father. We’re just two grown men saying good-bye”. No Bravery and Carry You Home are about his time at war. They are amazing but heartbreaking. Goodbye My Lover, You’re Beautiful and The Girl That Never Was are other emotional songs. He’s a wonderful song writer who writes about his real life experiences.
He had stage 4 kidney disease, he was dying, this song brought a long distant relation that was his blood type and he got his kidney. Stage 4 dialysis and stage 5 is end stage. I am stage 3.
I’m crying listening to this because I miss my father. When one of the people who loved you most in the world leaves it like a piece of your heart goes with them. 😢💔
James Blunt penned the heartfelt song “Monsters” as a touching tribute to his father, Charles Blount. Charles, who himself had donated a kidney, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. The song serves as an emotional expression of James Blunt’s feelings about his father and his illness, almost like a poignant farewell. In an interview with Good Morning Britain, Blunt shared, “Really that has been an amazing moment. Because when you realize your father’s mortality, it’s a great opportunity to say the things I’d like to say to him. So I have written a song called Monsters for him.” The music video for the song features James Blunt alongside his father, and it beautifully captures the depth of their relationship. Blunt decided to donate all the profits from the song to Help for Heroes and British Legion charities123. 🎵👨👦💔 I'm glad to see you again, I saw your other video and know you are going through a hard time with your family right now. *Hugs*
It may surprise you that although James looks like an actor he was a serving Captain in the British Army and saw active service. i can never watch this video without sobbing even though I know his dad is well. The level of emotion is so touching. When they finished filming his dad was quite taken aback too and he said to James ' I'm still here 🥰'
James sang this in one take and this was the first time his dad heard the song. His dad was dying at the time from kidney cancer. He received a transplant from a distant relative abroad after the video dropped. James and his dad were both Officers in the British army and everyone was crying in the studio including all the crew. His father showing the traditional British stiff upper lip and dry humour, apparently said, *why's everyone crying? I'm not dead yet!*
This song is a reflection of father does for his young vulnerable son when he is afraid of the monsters under his bed, but flipped on its head as it is now a son talking to his father who could be suffering from anything. But in this song a lot of people see a father who is dying and a son being as strong as he can be in those circumstances to ensure he dies without worry. He reads him a story, sorts his clothes and tells him not to worry about what is going on around him or inside of him. Things they want to say to one another are now past and mistakes now forgiven are also there too. It is a beautiful song of wishing peace and care towards the man who was once powerful enough to chase the monsters under your bed away.
Apparently, his producers wanted him to re-record the vocals because he was crying, and he refused. I'm so glad he did. Bless him for letting us feel this much emotion.
His dad was diagnosed with late stage kidney disease and needed a transplant. Due to this song, a distant relative was a match and he is doing fine now.
Great to see you post another reaction video after sharing what a tough time your family has been going through and yourself! ♥️Right choices bring right feelings!!
that is his father in the video and at the time of writing this song and doing this video, his father was in end stage kidney disease so he really thought he was going to lose his father so he did this to express his feelings while his father was still here. thankfully a family member heard about it and donated a kidney to him so he has recovered
His voice goes straight to the heart and soul of me. And missing my father, it makes me cry every time because there is never enough time. 😢 And seeing James with his father....I am glad they have this ❤❤ Welcome back 🌷🌷
😢❤ this is a beautiful song. The lyrics are absolutely heart, wrenching and very personal. It’s the absolute truth when we as the child, now have to give back to our parents and love them and comfort them and tell them that everything is going to be okay ….❤❤
This song of James Blunt’s, “Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, & battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........
James Blunt, song writer, musician, singer, army vet (like his Dad and Grandfather) author, highly intelligent and could’ve been a lawyer, Humanitarian, Humble, owns a pub and a nightclub, Husband, Dad, funny as hell and the nicest guy you would ever meet. He communicates his emotions through music because he can’t always say how he feels.
This song is incredible. He wrote it for his dad as the comment below mine states the story behind it. James Blunt has an incredible ability to just grab hold & pull your emotions out with his lyrics. Listen to "The Girl That Never Was" next. It was also based off a true story.
You stopped the video too soon! James' father reaches over and pats his arm as if to console him. It's very touching. Yes, that is James Blunt's father.
Sure you’ve been told that is his Dad, James Blunt decided to record this video so emotions & all were shown, one take I think & his Dad hadn’t heard the song before….thinking of you Tim.
Yeah I'm crying too watching this....Good choice!... If you're looking for more from him to review... You can try "You're beautiful" and "Good bye, my lover." 😊
twins james was a captain in the british army a tankie , the song was written for james by his sister , his father survived partly due to the video he needed a kidney this helped get him one
Tim, it’s funny you say he looks like a John Wick type…James Blunt is a former British Army Lieutenant who saw action. He drove a military vehicle into a war zone with his guitar strapped to the outside of the vehicle! This song was written because James’s Dad (who is sat next to him) was seriously ill with kidney disease and needed a transplant. They thought there was no hope, so this song was written and it was recorded in one take. The tears are real, but after they finished Mr Blunt senior turned to his son and said “What are you crying for, I’m still here!” He is still here because of that song, a distant family member heard it and got in touch and became his kidney donor. Bonnie Raitt's "Just Like That" is another song with a very deep message like this. It won a Grammy last year for Song of the Year. It's Folk music so might not be to everyone's taste but a DEFINITE must listen for anyone wanting to explore hidden treasures.
Such a soul wrenching song...I cried thinking of my adult kids saying goodbye to their Dad when he passed away after having having heart surgery to be able to get another kidney transplant

It only proves you're human like everyone else. NO greater honour in life to feel human. It's such a blessing.
Thank you for dedicating your life to helping others.

Actually I think the majority of the song was a poem written by his sister to his dad-

It wasn't cancer. Please check your facts before posting comments that are inaccuracies.
This was my first time hearing this song. It was very touching.
He's British X- Military. Unbelievable song. Glad his Dad gets to hear it. 🇦🇺

My God that was powerful, I could see how that one hit you. My dad has been gone six years now, and this one brought it all back.
That was beautiful! Thank you, take care.
James Blunt is a master of the emotional songs.
His dad was diagnosed with late stage kidney disease and needed a transplant. Due to this song, a distant relative was a match and he is doing fine now.
it was not cancer it was kidney disease and yes needed a transplant
@@angelado3 You are absolutely correct. I hope the OP edits their comment, so it could be more accurate.
Stage 4 kidney disease, no transplant for cancer.
Correct, it was kidney disease, as you say, no transplant for cancer
Another James Blunt song is The Girl Who Never Was.
I lost my dad at 12. This is a hard one. 💔 Great voice.
That must have been so hard...What is the best memory of your dad?
I'm so sorry. I feel your pain. I lost my dad at 13. It's been so long. I miss him. 😢
