  • 🟠 Title: Wild America 'Bobcat'
🟠 Summary: Our most common wild feline is a perfectly designed predator -- quick and clever enough to capture a tiny Meadow Mouse, yet formidable enough to bring down a full-grown Deer. Prey can become play, for this solitary hunter sometimes pesters its captured quarry to death. Easily confused with its cousin, the Lynx, the Bobcat flourishes in close proximity to humans.

Marty had to spend days on end out in the Wilderness to be at the right place at the right time to film this Bobcat interaction with the Lynx, Coyote and many other creatures. He was a very skilled and patient outdoorsman and His long series of many and varied film productions are His testimony.

Yep! Marty's films about wildlife was fascinating when I saw them years past. I, often, wonder what became of Marty.
When hiking, hunting, and/or fishing as always trying to keep an eye out for whatever. The two times I saw a bobcat remain special events in my memories.

Very entertaining still to watch, as I was a kid in the 80s. I did see a juvenile bobcat today on my evening walk in my area. Very rare to see them, but I am a VERY quiet walker. He was a little startled, but I talked to him a bit. Then left him alone. I was within 25' of it this time around. Last time I saw one was about two decades ago in the Santa Cruz mtns. (CA.).

A couple years while grouse hunting in Northern Michigan I decided to take a break and sat down on a stump to eat a sandwich, after about 10 minutes the loudest most god awful scream came from no more than 10 feet behind me ( yes 10 feet!) I turned around and there was a Bobcat , as soon as i saw it the bobcat ran away. That scream scared me so bad i shook like i was being electrocuted lol! Im not sure why that bobcat got so close to me , my thoughts are it had no idea i was there and when it did see me it gave out that scream. I had no idea a bobcat could make a noise like that and so loud. Funny story now, not so much then.

According to that map, Ohio is (or was in 1989) the only state totally excluded from the bobcat's range. That seems especially strange since Ohio University teams are called the Bobcats, and bobcats have been on display as native Ohio wildlife in the DNR area of the Ohio State Fair for many years.

They were trapped heavily and I believe the white indicates lesser populations or rare sighting areas. He said all continental states have populations of them.

Fun Facts: The bobcat is a member of the lynx family of felines. There are 3 or 4 different varieties of lynx. There is the Canadian lynx, and some of them do come down into some of the most northern regions of the US. There are lynx in northern Maine, and parts of other northern state out to the west that border Canada. The largest of lynx are found in Europe and Asia. There is the Iberian lynx of Spain, and the Eurasian lynx in Russia. There are Russians who keep these huge cats as house pets. And bobcats can get pretty big too. Their adult size and weight can range between about 20 pounds to as much as 60 or 70 pounds. Any animal kept in human captivity will tend to get larger than those in the wild, because many of them are overfed, and do not get the same level of exercise as the wild cats.
