USWE Hydration Packs - No Dancing Monkey Dissected

  • In our latest Dissected Series feature we take a deep dive into the world of USWE hydration packs. Several months ago USWE sponsored our Budget Bike Shootout and it was our first real chance to spend time using the Swedish brand’s hydration packs. USWE, pronounced you-swii, got their start after spending lots of time off-road and enduro riding in the remote and rugged areas of Sweden. Epic days of deep mudholes, rugged hill climbs and packing all the essentials to survive these adventures led them to this moment, when they knew they could do better. Wanting to create a durable and comfortable pack that eliminated the “Dancing monkey” on their back was the catalyst to starting USWE packs and if they’ve done one thing at all, it’s eliminate that dang monkey.
    Back in 2007, the founders went out and bought an old Husqvarna sewing machine to start testing their concept and the first prototypes were born. Over a decade later and their backpacks feature an award winning four-point suspension design, are made to be 100% bounce free, and come in a variety of sizes. After spending so much time in their backpacks and hip packs this summer, we reached out to USWE co-founder Karl-Johan Engdahl and asked him a few questions.

    I’ve been using the USWE Airborne 9 for about 9 months and love it. After a while you completely forget it’s there and going through rough rocky sections it rarely moves and just holds right to you.

    2nd season on mine. I'm big guy and fits tight but only problem so far was drinking hose came unattached at the bag. Had wreck and must have landed in rock one in a million and it pushed quick release. Otherwise super reliable piece of gear. Also have GoPro chest mount and works great. Using hero 7 black and videos usually solid.

    the bladder is by Hydrapak, nice system for sure, I have a 3L bladder, very easy to empty an fill water without making a mess too easily.

    The no movement and comfort have been great on my Airborne 9 and you are right about the ease of filling the bladder. But overall I have been disappointed in mine. Zipper and stitching breakage not long after the warranty ran out.

    Just came across these USWE - no dancing monkey - packs. Been using Dakine and Deuter as many of their models have a "suspension" style mesh back panel that holds the pack away from your back for maximum air flow and cooling - which is critical here in Arizona. The downside is that they use the common chest and waist straps and there is more movement than I'd like. The harness of the USWE looks promising and reviews are generally good, but concerned that I'd be trading one issue (ventilation) for another (secure fit).

    Just bought and received the airborne 9 based off of this review directly from uswe and they’ve changed the pouch for the bladder. It no longer has a zippered pouch for easy access. It’s a pouch with a really tight elastic band that’s not as user friendly. Customer service didn’t have an excuse as to why either. Just keep that in mind if that’s a feature you’re interested in. @uswe

      I went for my first ride with the hip pack yesterday. I pulled everything out of the camelback and threw it in the zulo 6. It felt kinda funny when I was just standing like it wasn’t gonna stay on but two pedal strokes on my bike and it was a game changer. Couldn’t even tell I was wearing it. An awesome change from wearing a pack all the time. Took a break on the trail and when we started again it felt like I was forgetting something because it feels like nothing is there. I do like the extra storage my camelback has compared to the hip pack. I carry a bottle of water for the dog and sometimes a couple of barley pops depending on the company I ride with. It would be nice if it had a couple straps for a rolled up jacket on the outside of it, especially this time of year. I bet it will be my go to when it warms up later this year. Only one ride with it so far so just my first impression. Thanks again, youz guyz are awesome.

    Been running a Camelbak Mule for 2 decades for dirt bikes and mtb. Dirt bikes is great cuz its on top of my chest protector so I don’t get sweaty but it does dance around. On the mtb it does get sweaty. How would you say the air ventilation is compared to Camelbak? Also would have liked to hear a little more on the hip pack. Just ordered an Osprey Savu to try out.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I'd say they're a little better at ventilation because they sit higher on the back, so that lower sweaty back thing isn't really an issue. Unless you get the biggest pack and load it up super heavy. They're not "off the back" quite as much as some with super vented pad systems, but we think they're good overall.
      Check out Hip Pack Roundup video we just posted a couple weeks back as it shows the pack in more detail!
      Thanks for watching.

    I'd love a new back pack as my current one moves around like crazy. I'm sure it'd be better if I tighten it down more but it's as tight as possible and moves around like crazy, quite distracting a moving pack is and really annoying in the corners as it'd move up your back and to the side

    I have the USWE Patriot 15, it's a horrible backpack. it's fine if you barely have anything in it. so a bit of water, only the tools, no mirrorless camera, no bike lock, no heavier stuff, even best to not have 3L bladder filled up all the way.
    The plastic loops dig into the collar bone. Also it's problematic with torso protector, neck brace, you have to align the pack straps after, or the straps will force the neck brace into the chest.I am
    I've disappointed in the seams, one of the straps at the top came off, that was within a year, seams failed, same happen with hose, the hose thing happen with only few weeks or months. The ripstop material seems weak, I've already torn a small hole at the top of the outer compartment.
    With EVOC things did not wear out before it was about 3 years. All seams lasted. First thing to go are the bottom of the pack and the zippers, and the material of the backpack, eventually that wears out. But lasts longer than USWE it seems. So not impressed with USWE.

      USWE offers an optional GoPro chest mount for their packs. I own a Stuntman, both Chestys (version 1 and 2) and a USWE pack with the mount and the USWE is by far the best one. My GoPro footage is extremely stable compared to the other chest mounts. It's not cheap but definitely worth it if you are looking to improve your video quality.

      Same. I got one when I started boyscouts since camelbak was too expensive for my family and I'm still using them for everything a decade later. Like $25 and they hold up well enough for the price. I've taken some good falls on my bike without any problems with tears or anything of the sort to the bags.

    • @Joshsams89
      @Joshsams89 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NiSE_Rafter I have 3 of them now, they're all still in fine condition, I use them for biking, camping, kayaking, and adventure riding ect. The differences between them are storage options, depending on what I'm doing exactly, or where I am, I want certain things on my back. And I've also taken tumbles, and for the money, I could ruin multiple of these cheap ones just as well as ruining one expensive one. I've actually only retired one so far, and it was due to stains, not tears or anything.
