      There is only one way to chain down equipment to your deck. The only way will do is the right way. Most people don’t know how much a 140,000 lbs piece of equipment moves on a deck chained improperly. It’s actually scarey. Stretch the links on a heavy duty chain so it stands up by itself will give an indication your load is moving.

    First truck I ever rode in was an international cabover I was like 4 or 5 and I couldn’t even climb in by myself. It was the time of my life and I still think about it even though I drive a truck now. That was literally the most epic thing me and my dad ever did and boy was he jamming some gears and grabbing some horn. You never know how one experience can shape the rest of your life.

    Usually a lot of places have a covered plastic bin about 4’x4’x4’ off to the side that has utility grade sand so you can throw down for traction.
    Another good idea for the cold climate places you could keep a couple 10lb. bag of cat litter which is always a good idea especially when you are trying to hook the tractor back to the loaded trailer in this slick snow or deck.

    Just be glad it’s them loading it and can’t blame you for being a rookie! Lol!
    Just an observation Steve. I know your breathing has always been an issue but my uncle was also a larger gentleman and climbing up and down the truck puts an incredible strain on your lower body especially the knees. The excess weight doesn’t help either. Being stuck in that chair all day you don’t get much exercise either. It’s part of the job.
    I would suggest that you try to go for a short walk before you go to sleep or a couple times through he day. It only takes about 10- 15 minutes a day to keep your heart rate up while getting your lungs to do it’s job by putting more oxygen into your bloodstream and working at peak efficiency just like your truck. If you have dirty air filter, your truck works harder to produce the same amount of work.
    Watching my uncle who worked hard all his life and then to watch him slowly wither away to nothing after he retired was not fun to watch especially when his mind was still sharp. His body ended up failing because of the lack of exercise from the lifestyle of trucking for over 40 years of being in that seat.
    I only say this to you because I have followed you from day one and have enjoyed every one of your videos especially when you took the time to respond back to me a couple times. It’s your personal touch to talk to your fans like myself that I enjoy so much and you being real and not just some opinionated blowhard like in other channels of which I don’t have time to waste watching.
    Much respect bruddah and All the best for 22!

    I have 2 questions. Why don't they spread some sand on the slick deck for traction?
    Would a piece of plastic keep you dryer when crawling under to chain down? Cold and wet usually equals sick for me.

    • @JohnHallgren
      @JohnHallgren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting that some departments contract a trucking company to deliver their new apparatus. I lived along a major interstate where all the Pierce units, headed for departments on the East Coast coast travelled. Usually, fire departments would fly in a couple of their own firefighters to drive the new rig back to the station on the interstates. This “assignment” is seen as big prestige and a reward.

      Be careful on Loading. There is no room on each side of your trailer. Those FD rigs are spinners. With empty water tanks. Have seen them spin out on streets. The drop down chains, that lots of new Fire Rigs have, like school busses. Are really not very good. Have heard that from Battalion Chief Friend of mine. They don't work in snow that is deeper. Slower driving speeds. You need those tread plates like they put on Military TANKS. That they use to carry on rack on outside steel frame. There rubber pads get slippery on Loading onto Train cars. Have seen then slid off. What if you put your TRUCK chains under the rear tires when loading. Just a thought. Can you make a carry board that has chains bolted to it to just slid on trailer, that the rear wheels can get traction on. Those FD rigs are to expensive to slid off trailer, get damaged. There is so much custom/ man hours put into there production. Very expensive none assembly line work to build them.

      Fire apparatus are not built for comfort, also you are putting a lot of miles of a rig, just to get it there. It is much easier to trailer it down there, and perhaps even cheaper.

      If you ever look in Angelica Larson channel watching her take the neck out of her drop deck looks a whole lot more civilised. A few quick release couplings all done hydraulically even got hydraulic bottle Jack's instead of Steve's wooden sleeper, hydraulic extending bed too. These Swedes can always find the cash for the best gear, that's before we start on the 750bhp Volvo on the front.
