10,000 Watts of Light - Powerhorse 7000 Portable Generator Review [LIGHT THERAPY]

  • We punish the Powerhouse 7000 portable generator from Northern Tool by throwing 10,000 Watts of halogen light at it. The generator is only rated for 5,500 continuos Watts and 7,000 surge or momentary Watts. We wanted to see how far we could push this little generator.
The Powerhorse 7000 is powered by a 420cc gas engine. A 6.6 gallon fuel tank enables a 10.6 hour runtime at half the load, or 2,750 Watts. AC Power is distributed from the generator via eight 120V outlets on four 20 Amp circuits. You also get one 240V 30A twist-lock outlet and one 12V 8A DC outlet.
You can find the Powerhorse 7000-watt portable generator at Northern Tool for $700 to $750.

Man I wish you run a test on the Powerhorse Generator with Electric Start - 27,000 Surge Watts, 18,000 Rated Watts..

It would have been nice to see what kind of power the generator could deliver via the 30A 220V outlet as that is how it would be connected when used as a whole house emergency generator.

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what we will be doing in a follow-up video. Not only will we test the 240V output, but we'll also be doing more analytical testing with Amp draw, voltage drop, etc.
Btw, we're in Central, FL where we have hurricanes and thunderstorms all the time. During power outages, you can drive up and down streets and see generators running outside. Very rarely do you see the 220/240V plug used on the generator. More than 80% of the time, you see typical 120V extension cords run outside and plugged into the 120V outlets.

@@Shoptoolreviews Hi! I loved this review as I bought this same model two years ago. Finally got tired of dragging extension cords around and out windows etc and had our electrician wire in proper legal service and now run the 220 line to an outside socket. Any plans to still do that review? Thanks!

May I ask, my friend has one of these and it failed. We think it may be the voltage regulator. Do they go bad very often?

Very good video. Is there any chance you can make a video or test the new Powerhorse 18000 watt portable generator? I just ordered this beast, I will be hooking it up directly to my main breaker (Installed by an electrician) via the 50amp connection I was wondering how many amps will I be able to use through that 50amp connection or if I can run my 5 ton AC(whole house) and how to get the max 18000 watt. I can't find anything on this new 18000 portable generator. Thank you.

I will see if we can review the new 18K, but I'm not sure if Northern Tool will be interested. I doubt that you can pull 18K through it constantly, but it should sustain 18K for a short time. I'm not sure on the A/C, that really depends on the age and the type of compressor. Startup draw on a 5-ton can be pretty substantial. A new inverter compressor on these new AC units would probably be just fine. Thanks for watching.

What dual fuel generator would you recommend? I'm looking at Champion,Westinghouse and DuraMax. All dual fuel 7000 running watts & 9500 starting watts

I'm not sure there's a big difference between any of these. Many of the components are made by the same companies.

@@Shoptoolreviews Thank you that's what I'm running into. Most generators are built the same.

Well, you’re right about one thing. God brought us out of the pandemic, but we are left without a President.
